Black Female Filmmakers Black Female Filmmakers (BFF) is a space for women of color working in the film industry to support, collaborate, and inform one another.

BFF is a collaborative space where filmmakers of diverse backgrounds can come together, share their work, and join a positive community of creative support. We hope to connect those in similar areas so they can build teams of talented like-minded individuals who share the same passion for storytelling and increasing diversity on screen.

We love to see it!

It’s the first time a female Black director has had a #1 film. And even better, it’s for a risk-taking film. Producers take note.

Have you seen "The Forty-Year-Old Version" on Netflix yet? Written and directed by BFF Radha Blank, we highly recommend!

Hailing from Brooklyn you can tell she has been influenced by fellow NY filmmaker Spike Lee. The entire movie is in black & white, possibly and ode to Lee's first film "She's Gotta Have It". Blank also takes inspiration from Isa Rae, finding herself rapping to herself in the mirror on several different occasions.

Overall a great story of an artist dealing with the stress of approaching middle-age and trying to stay true to herself. Would definitely put this on your watch list for this weekend!

Blank based the Netflix hit on her real-life, but there are some notable differences. She walked IndieWire through them.

We are OBSESSED with Lovecraft Country. We really can't get enough.

This past week's episode saw some double BFF action under the direction of Cheryl Dunye and show runner Misha Green.

Black Female Filmmakers are making it happen! Check out the series if you're not already hooked. It can get gorey fyi but it's HBO, so that pretty much comes with the territory.

Any thoughts?

Chinonye Chukwu interview discussing Black women in film:

“I mean, society doesn’t regard black women. Society doesn’t care about black women’s humanity and so we see the extension of that on screen. We’re disregarded and dehumanised and discredited in real life every single day. That doesn’t stop in cinema.”

Just 11 percent of all directors on the 500 top-grossing domestic films are women. That number is only slightly higher—32 percent—on short films. Because we are committed to supporting female filmmakers—not just by talking about the gender gap, but by actually helping close it in a meaningful way—

There’s no easy way to make a film. The process is incredibly long and complex with a thousand unmarked pitfalls along the way. Sometimes you learn by falling into them. Sometimes you learn by having someone else point them out to you. Which is why we called our friend Adrienne Weiss, an accomplishe...
