Payal Saha, a former inhabitant of Kolkata, founded Kati Roll Company in 2002 and has since grown its annual revenue to almost $14 million.

The popular street snack known as the "kati roll," which is a chargrilled kebab wrapped in a paratha or flatbread and originated in Kolkata, West Bengal, has now made it to the busy streets of New York and London.

A young woman from Kolkata named Payal Saha decided to launch her own food company in the US and called it The Kati Roll Company despite having no formal background in hospitality or even business. As a method to satisfy her personal appetites for the food she had grown up consuming, what initially started as a $14 million franchise with four locations throughout New York and London quickly grew.

The ability to just pick up a roll and get on with their work "seemed like a really plausible proposition for New Yorkers," the article says. The roll's adaptability—it could be eaten as a snack, a meal, or just as a finger food—also worked in Payal's favour. It is a cuisine that is both affordable and filling, she continues.

In 2002, Payal opened her first business, which catered to the late-night, after-party audiences and students. A second, larger midtown site followed in 2005, a location in London debuted in 2007, and a fourth location on the east side of Manhattan was introduced in March 2012, according to the author.

She responds, "I don't perceive fear because I don't know how to envision it. " when asked where she got the business bug. I was prepared to take on the world when I launched my business at the age of 22, which helped.

MomsKart is an online marketplace created by engineer Aman Porwal where mothers from all over India share homemade treats with a large audience. He explains what motivated him to start his own business.

Dimpy Bansal starts her day by reviewing her MomsKart notifications.

The Chandigarh homemaker is one of the 5,000 or so "mompreneurs" who use the platform created especially for Indian mothers to showcase their culinary skills to customers all over India.

Dimpy has gotten a request for besan ladoos today. She claims that the dessert is one of her most popular offerings on the platform. She talks about how wonderful it is that her ladoos, a family favorite, are now enjoyed by people all over the country as she works on making the sweet treat.

I first began producing namkeens in 2016. People from my society would typically be my customers, but after learning about MomsKart and contacting Aman, I have received so much support from people all over India," she explains, sharing a little-known fact: "I also intend to sell my cakes and pastries soon via the platform. I'm intrigued because it's new.

Engineer Aman Porwal from Indore is in front of this podium. He describes how a long-held desire to do something "different" evolved into a touching and unique business opportunity in an interview with The Better India.

Aman, who has always had an inventive mindset, remembers how, while his classmates would attend lectures during his college years, he was enthralled by what lay outside the classroom.

A self-made entrepreneur, Nina Lekhi started Baggit 30 years ago as a vegan accessories brand. Today, the brand, which is available offline and online, is all set to launch a new offering as it eyes international expansion.

Thirty years ago, Nina Lekhi started Baggit with Rs 7,000 borrowed from her mother and a dream. She was just 18 when she realised the need in the market for fun, funky, contemporary bags.

Nina started designing fashion accessories like sling bags, purses, wallets, clutches, shoulder bag.

However, her first attempt to open a store failed badly. She lost more than the money she invested, but that did not deter her. Today, Baggit has grown into a Rs 111 crore company with over 360 SKUs in handbags, 360 in wallets, and 70 in mobile pouches.

Raghuveer used to deliver packages for Amazon and now has his own start-up, proving that hard work does pay off.

It is said that necessity is the mother of invention. The statement, proves itself, time and again. Most entrepreneurial ventures are born out of necessity and aim to solve a problem. This venture, which deals with educational research and innovation, created by a mother who was concerned about the quality of her children’s education. Or this brilliant invention, that might be the solution to Bengaluru’s thermocol-clogged drains. This venture by a former delivery boy for Amazon is brilliant in its simplicity.

Raghuveer Singh Choudhary was born in an economically backward family in Jaipur. From a very early age, he prioritized work over education. Unable to complete his studies, he joined Amazon, as a delivery boy, where he got a monthly salary of Rs 9,000. Devoid of a bike, he used a cycle to deliver products to customer's doorsteps.

Raghuveer used to take frequent tea breaks while delivering products and noticed that finding a suitable spot serving great tea was difficult.

It must be noted here, that millions of Indians swear by a good cup of ‘tea’. It is not a long shot, to say that tea, can be the national beverage of the nation.

Well, it was while seeking a cup of perfect tea, that an idea dawned on Raghuveer. He would provide tea via delivery options. By his admission, today people want everything in the comfort of their home, so why not offer them what they want?

So, the young former Amazon delivery boy got to work, with three friends. Since the day he had begun working Raghuveer had saved money, and that he spent on renting out a place, hiring a person, installing phones, and making an entry into the market. The group began by taking orders from vendors in the vicinity. Soon, before he knew it, he was talking to over 100 vendors.

The tea and delivery service is so good that even vendors themselves have ordered cups. Who would not want a hot cup of tea, made using mineral water, reach them in 15 mins for just Rs 7? Raghuveer depends on phone-calls and WhatsApp, to procure orders.

A 28-year-old Kashmiri entrepreneur Malik Aadil has set up the first and largest online grocery delivery service in Kashmir. Aadil started his venture by the name of  ‘Groxery-The Store Next Door’, and is said to cover almost the entire city of Srinagar.

While talking about his app, Aadil said in the media, “I have developed an app for Groxery through which customers book their orders and we drop it at their doorsteps within 70 minutes.”

He also said that as of now the app has over 45K downloads on Android and 5K on IOS. Aadil informed that the app is planning to cover the Jammu city by the first week of February and later plans to extend district Baramulla, Budgam, Ganderbal, and Pulwama as well.

Aadil also shared about how this business idea came to be. He said, “I was working for Grofers (an Indian online grocery delivery service) in Bangalore in 2015 after completing my MBA when I decided to start my own venture. I had received a handful of experience as I was handling the marketing side of the company there.”

Reportedly, the app offers two modes of delivery- express, and slot. The express option is for urgent deliveries and is delivered within 70 minutes while the slot option is for delivery during time slots as per the customer’s convenience.

Aadil has built his own in-house inventory of more than ten thousand products. “We have ten thousand plus products available at the moment. We provide daily essentials like Grocery, household items, pet care, personal care, stationery, veggies, and others,” he said adding, “What makes us unique is that we also serve Harrisa (the minced mutton delicacy), eggs, and Kashmiri Rotis and all are in huge demands”.

His venture has also been a source of employment to the well-qualified youths in Kashmir. “Over thirty-five people, both boys and girls are working with me in the company yet. We have over ninety percent of staff from Kashmir,” he said adding that we are also planning to open Grocery branded retail stores across the city and other districts very soon.

A Pune-based startup named E Motorad has launched an e-cycle that is both a cycle and an electric bike. There are two variants of the e-cycle and they are suitable for riding across the city terrains as well as rocky terrains like the mountains.

As India continues to witness a radical leap in the electric mobility sector, a Pune-based startup named E Motorad has launched an e-cycle that also doubles as an e-bike.

Apart from being a sustainable alternative, the e-cycle addresses one of the biggest questions e-vehicles buyers have — what if the vehicle runs out of charge half-way? With an e-cycle, if the battery runs out of charge, the user can pedal their way back home or to the nearest location where they can charge the battery.

“The concept was inspired by European countries where most users use e-bikes for their commute. I came across this while travelling there in 2016,” says Rajib Gangopadhyay, the founder of E Motorad.

Rajib, who has been involved in the mobility sector for eight years, was travelling across various countries during 2016. During his time in Europe, he saw many locals using e-bikes every day, and he wanted to introduce the same back in India.

“I spoke to many experts who were also in the e-mobility sector in India to understand how I can start a company, set up a manufacturing unit and drive sales. But in India, those who wish to switch to an e-vehicle are always anxious about their decision because they worry about their vehicle running out of charge half-way through their commute. So, I wanted to introduce an e-cycle that would work as both an e-bike and a cycle, as well as a combination of both,” says Rajib, adding that he spent three years researching and developing the model along with CEO Kunal Gupta.

By early 2020, the duo had finalised their design and established a manufacturing unit in Pune that can produce up to 300 cycles every month.

About the e-cycle
E-Motorad has introduced two types of bikes — EMX and T-Rex. While both are suitable for riding across city terrain, they can also be used on uneven terrain as a mountain bike.

Henna Jain Tatia, 26, and her brother Jaijash Tatia, 27, both studied in the UK. During their time there, they managed their financials through an interest-free overdraft from a UK bank, which allowed them to have small but sufficient credit month-to-month. Studying abroad, this allowed them to have better financial flexibility.

After returning to India, they realised that students in India did not have such financial services. Hence, they started StuCred, a one-stop application for college students’ financial needs.  Their mission is to help college students have access to formal financial inclusion and financial flexibility through a line of credit. Henna says, early access to credit helped her learn about the credit system and build her credit score.

StuCred is a fintech app that allows college students to get instant and real-time loans without any human interaction. After a one-time identity and college authentication, students can borrow money 24X7 on the app. They can borrow anywhere between Rs 500 and Rs 30,000 at zero percent interest rate, and repay within 30 days. Instead of generating revenue through interests, they levy a flat service tax or minimal service tax.  In one and half years of operation, the Chennai-based startup claims to be having over 25,000 users. The bootstrapped startup has tie-ups with over 250 colleges across the country, including IIT Bombay, IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bengaluru, and many others.

02/02/2021

Churchill & Company is a brand that has its roots in India. The company’s one and only manufacturing unit is based in Jalandhar, Punjab.

Churchill & Company was founded in 2017 by two young entrepreneurs Abhishek Chopra and Sagar Sarin. Though relatively new, it is all set to compete in the crowded men’s footwear market in India which has the likes of Zara and Woodland.

The two were working in Philip Morris International and Zomato respectively before they quit their jobs to start Churchill & Company with savings amounting to Rs 40 lakh.

The idea behind launching the brand was to manufacture stylish and comfortable shoes at affordable prices. Abhishek saw a gap in the market that compelled him to launch a footwear brand that reaches an equilibrium where the three aspects meet. He says,

“There are only a few options available in the premium men’s footwear sector. Some of the biggest brands are of phenomenal quality but do not do justice to the Indian market in terms of pricing.”

This led to the conceptualisation of the brand.

Whenever you are manufacturing a product, craftsmanship and the technology you are using are the first few things that determine the strength of your product, Abhishek says adding that there’s a big misconception in India where hand lasted shoes are often referred to as handmade shoes.

Churchill & Company combines modern techniques using state-of-the-art machinery and craftsmanship to create good quality products. The shoe manufactured by the company has a combination of lightweight leather soles and the shoes are made using toe lasting, counter molding and several other machines.

Despite both the founders being based out of Delhi and the company headquartered in Delhi, Churchill & Company has set up its manufacturing unit in Jalandhar. Explaining the reason behind this, Abhishek says,

02/02/2021

The year was 2010. Jyoti Wadhwa, a Delhi housewife and a mother of a two-year-old girl, found herself in a “confused state” when her husband Anshul Bansal, the only earning member of the family, came back home one day and said he wanted to quit his job as an investment banker and do something on his own. Jyoti realised that given the risk her husband was about to take, she needed to start contributing financially as well.

“I figured I have to do something but at the same time, I did not want to leave my daughter in a playschool. I was looking for options where I could work from home,” says Jyoti, who worked in the HR and Admin department of an MNC for three years before getting married in 2006.

She had heard from some relatives that one could earn from online businesses; they had also suggested that selling vintage sarees online could be a viable option. Since learning about the possible opportunity, Jyoti researched the market for five to six hours every day, trying to understand what customers were buying and where they were. She was also trying to zero in on the amount of investment needed.

The Rs 50,000 corpus came from Anshul, who had Rs 1 lakh in savings and decided to split that evenly for his business and Jyoti’s. While Anshul focussed on setting up his IT services business, Jyoti immersed herself in creating an online business for selling vintage sarees.

During the course of her research, Jyoti found that printed pure silk fabrics were in demand and started searching for them.

The first-time entrepreneur then selected some items and uploaded them on eBay. And Sanskriti Vintage was born. In the beginning, trying to figure out how to list and describe products online seemed challenging, but she soon got the hang of things. Being in the export business without any staff in the early days meant that Jyoti had to do the shipping from the postal services herself, standing in queues with her young daughter for three-four hours. While pure silk embroidered sarees were being sold online, no one else was selling hand-crafted embroidered sarees at the time and that proved to be the differentiator, according to Jyoti.

Aditi Bhosale Walunj and Chetan Walunj’s story is just that. The husband-wife duo is the brains behind Repos Energy, a Pune-based startup which is leveraging IoT, cloud, and easy and efficient payment solutions to enable door-to-door delivery of diesel in around 65 Indian cities. The Swiggy or Zomato for fuel distribution, it’s gotten a fillip from none other than industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata, who has backed the startup.

Their biggest support came from an unexpected source – from industrialist and investor Ratan Tata who invested an undisclosed amount in their startup, and that has helped them scale.

“Meeting Ratan Tata was an overwhelming experience. At our very first meeting, he assured us of his support for our idea, and when the solution took initial shape on the ground, and the results were clear as day, we were able to receive his full backing,” they recall.

“Repos provides retail outlets with Repos Petrol Pumps (RPPs), which are an exact replica of retail outlets, albeit on wheels. This enables them to cater to bulk customers at their doorstep.

The diesel delivery company charges .25 paise to Rs 2 extra per litre. A delivery below the quantity of 500 litres, however, is charged according to a system based algorithm, which is a function of delivery quantity, delivery distance and time.

“More than 300 bulk consumers are using the Repos platform to get home delivery of diesel. Around 2 to 2.5 lakh litres of diesel is sold per month through the Repos platform in Pune alone as of now,” Aditi and Chetan reveal.

“We became a startup that reached more than 50 cities in India within a quarter,” the duo says. Today, Repos boasts a prestigious clientele, the likes of Larsen & Toubro, Tata Group, Mahindra & Mahindra, Schindler, JW Marriott hotel, Phoenix Mall, The Westin hotel, and General Electrical, to name a few.

“In terms of value, our turnover has grown from a mere Rs 70,000 to nearly Rs 2 crore per month,” says the husband-wife duo who is planning to replicate this model across 32,000 partner pumps next, over a span of five yrs.

31/01/2021

So kicked were Shubhra Chadda and her husband, Vivek Prabhakar, about launching a lifestyle brand in 2009 that they didn't blink before selling their house to raise money. "It didn't take much of a discussion to sell it," recalls Chadda of launching Chumbak in Bengaluru in March 2010.

Chadda is elated at how the idea that she nurtured since 2004 while working at technology company NetApp, has taken shape. It wasn't until 2009 that the art aficionado, on a break from her job for raising her first child, decided to turn entrepreneur. "After a year of being a full-time mom, I realized I needed to go back to doing something," says Chadda.

Not that floating Chumbak was a cakewalk. The days in the run-up to Chumbak's launch were enervating. Chadda says she has done everything from carrying 120 boxes full of products to a seventh-floor rented apartment, which doubled as Chumbak's first office and storeroom, to convincing manufacturers to work with Chumbak despite the initial low volumes.

The company has come a long way since then, with Chadda spearheading products, design, and sourcing. From selling collectibles and accessories at kiosks and pop-up stores in airports and theatres or niche design stores to launching apparel and personal care products for women, Chumbak, says Chadda, has grown into a full-fledged lifestyle brand. Personal care—moisturizer, body scrub, soap, shower gel, and more—the latest category, is on the verge of being launched. Chadda keeps an eye on the details. "One of the biggest things for us is the store experience; how should it look, how should it smell, what kind of music will be played," says Chadda.

Having bagged the license for single-brand retail in 2017, apart from ₹80 crore in a funding round led by Gaja Capital, Chumbak aims to open 25 more large-format stores in 2018.

"She is perseverant, and learns from the market," says Bharati Jacob, partner at Seedfund. "Shubhra is great at design and Vivek is great at branding. Shubhra has very high levels of conviction about her designs. And, she has been proven right more often than not."

Four years ago, Prafull Billore (20) dropped out of an MBA course in Ahmedabad, and decided to start his own business of selling chai.
Chai is India’s favourite beverage. According to this report, for every one cup of coffee, Indians consume 30 cups of tea. For some, it’s not just a drink that starts their day — it’s a way of life. This sentiment is exactly what Prafull Billore from Madhya Pradesh tapped into – like so many millions of tea sellers. So what makes him different? Consider his life story –

Four years ago, after he dropped out of an MBA course in Ahmedabad, Prafull decided to start his own business of selling chai.

He borrowed Rs 8,000 from his father, and put up a stall named ‘Chai Wala’, outside the premises of the Indian Institute of Management – Ahmedabad. On his first day, he made a profit of Rs 150. Everyone was intrigued by this English-speaking chaiwala.

Today, Prafull has a 300 sq ft restaurant named ‘MBA Chai Wala’, where he has employed 20 people. In the financial year 2019-20, he recorded a turnover of Rs 3 crore. “My dream is to sell tea across the country, and that every Indian drink my tea,” he says.
