Government Plans Gold Super Cooperative Structure

By Wilson Mulinda

The government is set to establish a national super cooperative structure specifically targeting Zambia’s gold-rich mining areas.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Mines, HAPENGA KABETA, says the new model will unite chairpersons of existing mining cooperatives in each gold-producing region.

Dr. KABETA explains that forming an organised framework will strengthen government support for artisanal and small-scale miners.

He says the gold-focused super cooperative will enhance coordination, expand training programmes, and improve access to modern mining equipment, tailored to the specific needs of gold miners.

Dr. KABETA adds that the initiative will help formalise mining operations while promoting safer and more efficient mining practices.

Speaking during a meeting with Planet Gold Zambia, Dr. KABETA emphasised that the initiative will prioritise mercury-free gold processing technologies to safeguard both miners’ health and the environment.

Meanwhile, Planet Gold Zambia National Project Manager, ABIGAIL MWAILENGE, welcomed the proposed structure.

Ms. MWAILENGE said the initiative aligns with global efforts in 27 countries aimed at supporting artisanal gold miners.

This is according to a statement issued to ZNBC News by Ministry of Mines Principal Public Relations Officer, SHAMWINGA TEMBO.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced he would extend the June 19, 2025, deadline for ByteDance to divest TikTok’s U.S. assets if no deal is reached, marking his second extension after initially delaying the ban from January to April.

The decision, amidst a U.S.-China tariff dispute, has drawn criticism from Democratic senators who argue Trump lacks legal authority and that the proposed deal may not fully sever ByteDance’s influence, as required by a 2024 law citing national security concerns.

Mixing Alcohol & Medicine: A Cocktail for Disaster! 🍷💊

You’ve probably heard it before: “Don’t drink alcohol if you’re on medication!” But how bad can it really be? VERY bad! Mixing alcohol with certain drugs can cause dangerous side effects, organ damage, or even death. If you are on medication and you have a chi-laka for alcohol, this post is for you. Let’s break it down.

👉 Alcohol Changes How Drugs Work – It can weaken, cancel out, or dangerously enhance their effects.
👉 Liver Overload – Your liver processes both alcohol and medication, but when mixed, it can get overwhelmed, leading to toxic buildup and long-term damage.
👉 Deadly Side Effects – The combination can cause drowsiness, dizziness, vomiting, high blood pressure, heart problems, or even coma.

🚨 Medications You Should NEVER Mix with Alcohol:

❌ Painkillers (Opioids & NSAIDs) → These can cause Extreme Drowsiness & Overdose Risk..
Some Examples are:
• Paracetamol (Panado), Codeine, Tramadol, Morphine.
• Ibuprofen (Brufen), Naproxen, Aspirin – Can cause stomach bleeding & ulcers.

❌ Antibiotics → Nausea, Vomiting, & Dangerous Heart Effects
• Metronidazole (Flagyl), Tinidazole, Linezolid – Can cause violent nausea, vomiting, fast heartbeat, and liver damage.

❌ Diabetes Medications → Dangerous Blood Sugar Drops
• Metformin, Insulin, Sulfonylureas (Glipizide, Glyburide) – Alcohol can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), dizziness, confusion, or even unconsciousness.

❌ Antidepressants & Anxiety Meds → Extreme Sedation & Blackouts
• SSRIs (Fluoxetine/Prozac, Sertraline/Zoloft, Paroxetine/Paxil) – Increased risk of agitation & suicidal thoughts.
• Benzodiazepines (Diazepam/Valium, Lorazepam/Ativan, Alprazolam/Xanax) – Alcohol can intensify sedation, leading to coma or overdose.

❌ Blood Pressure Meds → Dangerous Drops in BP & Fainting
• ACE Inhibitors (Lisinopril, Enalapril), Beta-Blockers (Atenolol, Metoprolol), Calcium Channel Blockers (Amlodipine, Nifedipine) – Alcohol can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, leading to fainting or dizziness.

❌ Allergy & Cold Meds → Extreme Drowsiness & Hallucinations
• Antihistamines (Loratadine, Cetirizine) – Alcohol increases drowsiness & reaction time, making it dangerous to drive.

❌ Cholesterol Meds (Statins) → Liver Damage
• Atorvastatin , Simvastatin, Rosuvastatin – Combining with alcohol increases liver toxicity risk.

💡 What Should You Do?
✅ Check Labels & Ask a Doctor – Many medications have clear warnings against alcohol use.
✅ Wait Until It’s Safe – Some drugs stay in your system for hours or days, so waiting a few hours after drinking might not be enough.
✅ Know the Risks – If you’re on medication, even one drink can have serious consequences!

⚠️ The Bottom Line: Mixing alcohol with medicine isn’t just a minor issue—it can lead to deadly side effects, organ damage, and severe health complications. When in doubt, skip the alcohol! 🚫🍷"

TEACHER WALKS AWAY WITH SCHOOL TV AFTER HEAD'S REFUSAL TO CASH FIVE DAYS ALLOWANCE

A teacher in Lusaka has reportedly walked away with the staffroom Tv after the school administration's failure to give him his allowances for the one week meeting he attended in Chilanga.

According to available information, the teacher in question was asked to use his own money and was promised to be paid back with a top up. However, after attending the meeting, the head teacher changed his mind and continued with his favourite song "The school has no money".

The teacher was patient enough for many days but his madness was triggered when his friends started making fun of him saying the python has been reduced to a worm. He was taunted because everyone knows he cannot be dared and never jokes about his money.

It seemed after the taunts, he went straight to the office of the head teacher and started demanding for his money.

Minutes later, he was seen walking out of the head teacher's office with a sagged face. He dashed to the staffroom, cautiously unmounted the Hisense Tv that was resting on the wall then made his way out of school.

When people started talking about it he shouted "this is collateral" and left the school premises.

If you were looking for a sign to not get married this weekend, here it is.👇👇👇

A farmer's wife, Anelle de Bruin (46), was charged with planning to murder her husband in Aliwal North, South Africa. She allegedly hired a middleman to find hitmen to kill her 56-year-old husband and stage it as a "farm attack," including shooting the family's dogs and vehicle tires to make it look real.

She reportedly paid a deposit and promised more money from insurance payouts after the killing. Police caught her after a tip-off, and she was arrested on January 9, 2025. She appeared in court, was released on R2000 bail with conditions (no farm visits, supervised child visits), and the case was postponed to April 23, 2025, for further investigation. She could inherit over R50 million if her husband died.

BOY DROWN IN CHONGWE RIVER

Chongwe, February 19, 2025, a boy aged between 10 and 12 years, identified as Joshua Njobvu, tragically drowned in the Chongwe River while swimming with friends. The incident occurred between 17:00 and 18:00 hours, prompting a distress call to local firefighters at 18:05 hours.

Despite the quick response from emergency services, the search operation was suspended late in the evening due to poor visibility. However, efforts resumed today as firefighters remain committed to locating the missing boy.

According to preliminary reports, Joshua, who was not confident in his swimming abilities, initially refrained from entering the river. Peer pressure reportedly led him to join his friends, who had promised drinks only to those who swam. Tragically, he was overwhelmed by the river's strong currents.

The Chief Fire Officer has stated that the search operation may continue for three days or longer, depending on the circumstances. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a young life and emphasized the critical need for parental guidance regarding water safety. "It is heartbreaking to lose young souls at such a tender age," he remarked. "Parents must educate their children about the dangers of swimming in rivers and dams to prevent such untimely tragedies."

Authorities caution that the chances of recovering Joshua's body near the drowning site are slim, as strong currents may have carried it downstream. The recovery of the body or any development will be shared once available, we extend our comfort to Joshua’s family.
