Hundreds of cyclists and bicycling advocates are joining forces on the World Bicycle Day Saturday to help shape Kathmandu as a bicycle-friendly city.
They have launched โ€˜Cycle Culture Movementโ€™, a collective effort of various formal and informal groups and organizations raising voices for mainstreaming bicycle as the clean, affordable and sustainable means of transportation.
The event begins with a rally at 7:30am from Mangal Bazar in Lalitpur and ends at Durbar Marg where it will converge into a mass meeting. Newly elected mayors of Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Kirtipur will be the guests of honour at the event, accordingto the organisers.
โ€œIt is a celebration of Kathmanduโ€™s growing bike cultureโ€ says Amir Masal, an avid cyclist and one of the organisers.
โ€œThe purpose of the event is to inspire more people to take up cycling and use the bicycle for their daily commute in the Valley.โ€
The mass is also part of cycling advocatesโ€™ sustained effort of prodding the authorities into investing more on cycle-friendly infrastructure.
โ€œIt would serve as a reminder to the politicians and officials of how numerous and varied is the local two-wheeled population,โ€ Masal says, adding that it provides an opportunity for cities to rethink the future of mobility.
In recent years, health and environmental quality have emerged as the new drivers supporting cycling activity. But roads built with little or no regards to cyclists remain a major obstacle.
President of Nepal Cycle Society Ratna Ram is hopeful of firm commitments from the newly elected city chiefs in implementing policy measures to create and provide large-scale safe cycling infrastructure.
โ€œWe need infrastructures that are easy to navigate and keep cyclists safe from the rest of the traffic,โ€ says Shrestha, who has been advocating for safety of cyclists for years.
โ€œCities need to address these issues so that cyclists could complete their journeys safely; ideally without having to leave a bike path. It would benefit the highest number of people,โ€ he says.
