We are saddening to learn of the passing of Allen Kuhn, one of the founders of Hanover's 3 Hogs BBQ. Our sister magazine captured the story of their business several years ago, and Kuhn told us he considered good BBQ to be "an art." He will be missed.

Important Announcement from The Markets at Hanover

As many of you have noticed, The Markets at Hanover looks different than it once did. Many of the businesses and restaurants that we (and you) love so much have moved out to open their own Brick & Mortar locations. We have loved celebrating each of these success stories over the course of the past 10 years. However, since 2020, we have noticed a different trend in visitors to the Markets and recognize that our current model is no longer working. We have been working to figure out what the next path is for The Markets and in the coming year, our building will transition back to it's original intention of being a warehouse. We will keep you all updated as these changes occur and when a timeline for the change is established.

We are also helping our remaining merchants find new homes for their businesses, if you know of any available spaces, please share and we will pass that information on to them.

In the meantime, we encourage the community to continue supporting the small businesses housed here and many who opened their doors for the first time at The Markets at Hanover. Now, more than ever, they need your support. We encourage you to take time to stop and and visit:

Even wonder what happens to fish when lakes and ponds freeze over the winter? Thanks to York County Parks for solving this mystery!

❄️🐟 How Lakes Freeze and Insulate Aquatic Life
Another topic we had planned to talk about on our Nature Walk at the Lake is what happens with the lake at winter.

🌊 How Do Lakes Freeze?
Lakes freeze from the top down. As the surface cools to 32°F (0°C), it forms ice, and the warmer water below rises. This “turnover” helps mix nutrients and keeps the deeper water at a stable temperature.

Ice Insulates the Water Below
The ice layer insulates the water beneath, keeping it around 39°F (4°C). This temperature is perfect for fish and other aquatic animals to survive the winter without freezing.

Life Under the Ice
Even though the surface is frozen, fish like bass and bluegill, along with other aquatic animals, remain alive by slowing their metabolism. Some fish continue to feed, but most stay inactive, conserving energy. Many people love our turtles at Nixon Park and wonder what they do during winter — they hibernate during the colder months. They typically burrow into the muddy bottom of the pond, where the water stays just warm enough for them to survive. Their metabolism slows down significantly, and they can survive on very little oxygen, allowing them to rest until spring.

Why is This Important?
The ice provides a protective barrier, allowing aquatic life to continue thriving even in extreme cold. Without it, lakes would freeze completely, threatening life below.
