Welcome back after a week off to another episode of The EcoThink Podcast! For our 12th episode, Yuko and I decided to discuss Old Growth Forests and their importance to the environment, the fight against climate change, and the 2020 Strategic Review called for sustainable forestry. Although Yuko and I have not been able to go out to support them in person, this conversation was sparked by what is happening in Fairy Creek with current logging action and protest against it to protect our Old Growth Forests.
If you want to learn more about what you can do to protect Fairy Creek, you can visit , or go to www.laststandforforests.com. As always, resources we discuss in the episode are in the episode description, and we welcome any questions or comments you may have. We plan to revisit this topic again for sure!

Episode 10 of the EcoThink Podcast
is now live on your favorite podcast hosting service. And in this one, Yuko and I speak with Dr. Andy MacKinnon, expert mycologist, ecologist, and 1st rate Fun Guy (I had to. I'm not sorry.)

Dr. MacKinnon shares his knowledge with us on what Fungi are as a group of organisms (surprise, they aren’t closely related to plants at all!), some of their roles in our ecosystems (including the ones that live inside our bodies), and why beneficial fungi are so important for the health of our forests.

If you are interested in picking up some of Dr.
MacKinnon’s work on mushrooms and plants of the Pacific Northwest go pre-order his Royal BC Museum Handbook “Mushrooms of British Columbia”, set to launch this September - just in time for foraging season!

I so excited to share today's episode with you all. This conversation with Dr. Heather Baitz was eye-opening and helped me understand so much more about what it means to deal with and hopefully overcome climate anxiety and climate distress. We talked about her own journey with feelings of climate distress, and how getting involved with her community helped her to manage these feelings so that they were more adaptive than harmful. We also had a great discussion about how to get involved with local climate groups, how to know which one is the right one for you, and how to encourage effective environmental activism using the five principles put forward by Project Inside Out. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this episode!

A field of Camas in the sun. Spring time really is here. I'm so excited to share this week's EcoThink podcast episode with you because it features Dr. Andy MacKinnon - local fungi expert and overall wonderful human. We actually met him yesterday when I took this photo at Devonian Park, doing a fungal survey of fungi growing under Gary Oak trees. Did you know that all trees have fungal partners growing around their roots? This symbiotic relationship benefits the trees by extending their network of roots for more nutrients and water uptake, and helps the fungi by providing them with nutrients as well. Tune in this Wednesday for the launch of the interview on your favorite podcast hosting service, or head to the EcoThink Patreon page to get early access!

My favourite thing about has been the excuse to read and research more on environmental issues that I have always meant to, but never prioritized before. When and I first started this podcast, we said we would follow the topics that interested us and pique our curiosity, and that's exactly what we have done. Taking you listeners along for the ride has been amazing so far, and I'm excited to see where we go from here.
What questions do you have? Suggest your podcast topics below and you may see us do our signature deep dive into the rabbit hole to learn more about it. This picture shows just how willing I am to do the dive - (taken a couple of years ago in Hawai'i).

Episode 6 of the EcoThink Podcast is now live! In this episode, Yuko and I have a host-full discussion about fast fashion and its impact on the environment, our society, and how we interact with this issue in our day-to-day lives. When Yuko asked me to do an episode on fast fashion (a requested topic by a friend! Do you have a topic you’d like us to cover? Let us know in the comments!), I wasn’t expected to see just how intense this industry is and how pervasive fast fashion is in our society. Not only that, but I found out that next week is - which means this is a perfect time to have this discussion. When you are done listening to this episode, please head over to .rev to learn more about how to get involved and call for society wide change in the fashion industry.

13/04/2021

Have you ever wondered what an old-growth forest is and why it’s important? “Old-growth Forest” is a term that doesn’t have an official definition, but a working definition by B.C. scientists indicate that they are forests that include trees older than 250 years on the coast and older than 140 years old in the interior of the province. These forests are full to bursting with biodiversity that cannot be replicated easily if at all due to the sheer amount of time they have been growing. Not only is the biodiversity of an old-growth forest an important feature, but old-growth forests are also massive stores of carbon that have been sequestered over the centuries. Although the exact amount of carbon sequestration of an old growth forest is variable and still being studied to this day, there is evidence that the previous belief that old-growth forests were merely carbon neutral is incorrect. In actuality, the rate of carbon accumulation of a tree increases continuously with its size.
Are you interested in learning more about old-growth forests? Check out the references in the final slide. Also, go read up on the efforts of to protect one such old-growth forest in our own backyard.

I’m a huge fan of green spaces for businesses. Not only does it create a calm and rejuvenating space for everyone that works there, but a green space is also a huge opportunity to create a carbon sink, add to local biodiversity, and support local pollinators. However, not all green spaces are created equal. When planted outside I definitely prefer ones that include native and/or edible plants, nitrogen fixing plants, and drought resistant plants. Choosing these options over the traditional grass and ornamentals means that your business’ green space becomes a powerhouse for the health of the environment! What are you excited about incorporating into your business’ green's space today?

Don’t forget to take a plant break and appreciate your house plants for all that they do! I bought this pothos plant when we first moved into this apartment and it only had a few leaves, now look at how long it’s getting! House plants can be a great way to bring nature into your home, which can help reduce stress, improve air quality, and absorb carbon emissions as they go. If you are looking for a forgiving house plant to get started, the pothos is a great one that doesn’t mind dim lighting.

approved book alert!

If there is one climate change book you read this spring, make it A Good War by Seth Klein. This book has the subtitle “Mobilizing Canada for the Climate Emergency”, and the premise is taking a close look at how Canada responded to the global emergency of World War 2 and what lessons we can learn from that experience when applied to climate change. I was a bit sceptical at first, because if you know me you know I tend to veer on the side of pacifism and am uncomfortable with war rhetoric for a variety of reasons. But Klein changed my mind. Not because he is pro-war or sees WWII with pink-coloured lenses - he doesn’t wax poetic about the trials that this period of our history faced, and is critical about what we need to avoid repeating - but because he systematically showed how Canada was able to rally in an extremely short period of time (less than 5 years) to completely overhaul the economy, meet war-time demand for new technologies, and rally a population of people whose experiences and and lives differ hugely across this massive country. This is the kind of action we need today. Each chapter includes clear and succinct calls to action for our country to meet the climate crisis head on, and I challenge every politician at every level of government in Canada to read this book. Tag your MLA and MP below to get them to have read this book! Have you read A Good War yet? What did you think?
Go to sethklein.ca to find out more about the book and how to take action now.

I’m excited to announce that Episode 5 of The EcoThink Podcast is now live! In this episode, Yuko and I speak with Heidi Grantner from Synergy Enterprises about Carbon Accounting. Heidi is a lovely person and does great work with Synergy in British Columbia helping businesses understand their carbon footprint, strategizing to reduce said carbon footprint, and striving to become climate champions. We discuss what Carbon Accounting is, why it’s an important tool in the toolbox of an environmentally conscious business, how carbon offsets can be helpful if done properly, and what steps your business can start to take to go carbon neutral. Synergy Enterprises have an impressive list of local businesses that have already taken some huge steps to becoming carbon neutral that you can check out on their website www.synergyenterprises.ca. Also, don’t forget to check out their non-profit sister where amazing work is underway with , , , and .

Have you ever wondered what the big deal with ocean acidification is? Certainly warmer waters seem like something that would be nice for those of us who like ocean sports. But here’s the thing, when the ocean warms up, it also becomes more acidic by drawing in more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This is a huge problem for loads of fish and invertebrate species like oysters, sea urchins, crabs, and plankton because they depend on the ocean being in balance for their health. Ocean acidification has big implications for biodiversity, ecosystem health, tourism, and fishing. If you would like to do a simple (and cheap) home experiment to see the effects of acidic water for yourself, I recommend checking out ‘s awesome experiments on their website, seaquaria.org.

05/04/2021

Sourcing sustainable packaging is a key step in making sure your is . There are so many options out there that it is both easier than ever before but can also feel overwhelming when deciding what to choose. Some quick things to keep in mind are:
Are you able to make use of packaging to reduce single-use items? (Great for grocery delivery services, meal prepping, or even vintage clothing swaps!)
If you decide to use cardboard/paper packaging, aim for packaging that has a high percentage of post-consumer recycled content - this means that it has been used at least once before and recycled back into a usable product! You can get boxes, tissue paper, wrapping paper, and even corrugated cardboard for packing filler that has post-consumer recycled content.
If you decide to use something compostable, double check that the packaging can actually be composted in a home compost system, not just an industrial compost system. This is key because when you send your product to your client you don’t know what kind of composting infrastructure they will have access to.
Encourage your customers to reuse and or dispose of your packaging the way it’s supposed to. If you can include a small note on how and where to recycle/reuse the packaging, your customers can have an easier time on their end.
Keep in mind that small steps are important too! We are going through unprecedented times right now and if your small business cannot afford to change its packaging don’t tear yourself apart. Take the small steps that you can today and plan for the future changes you want to make.
There is a lot more to keep in mind about sustainable packaging! What packaging tips can you recommend? Share your tips and let’s discuss below.

02/04/2021

This past week has been a tumultuous one. Not only has the work really begun on my dissertation for school (running a study is way cooler than I ever thought it would be, but it’s also strange and stressful), but we have also been packing up our things to get ready to move at the end of the month. This apartment has been a great home base for the past almost two years, and I’m simultaneously excited to start a new chapter and sad and anxious that we are leaving the familiarity behind. As I have been packing, I’ve noticed the judgemental sustainability advocate in my brain kept yelling at me for not doing everything perfectly, not using aesthetic and sustainable packing techniques, not doing my absolute best to eat only homemade and healthy plant-based food, not showing the world how to be the “best green person ever”.
But this post is to remind myself - and you reading this - that being imperfect is normal. You don’t have to go 100% on the environmental bandwagon every second of every day to make a difference. Sometimes, it’s enough to be kind to yourself, to ask yourself to rest, recoup, and to come back in a few days ready to make changes as you can. It’s okay to take imperfect steps, to mess up, and to change your mind. This weekend don’t forget to take a break, breathe, and build up your energy. I will do the same.
All photos are from trips we took in the last couple of years to Tofino, Ucluelet, and Galiano.
