‘Urey’s US$385K House in the USA’ | Liberian Observer

Liberian presidential candidates have been wooing electorates, convincing them that the October 10 presidential and legislative elections should usher in change to improve, among other things, the economic and infrastructural development of the country.

Many of the candidates, particularly the All Liberian Party (ALP), led by businessman Benoni Urey, have vowed to effect a regime change, because the governing Unity Party (UP) led government “has failed the Liberian people,” they say.

Why Alexander B. Cummings is the best person to develop Liberia? -

“This is a change you can trust, this is a real change. If we keep doing the same things, we will not change Liberia. If we keep electing the same politicians, with the same experiences, Liberia will not change.” Alexander B. Cummings, Jr.
After more than 170 years of independence, the upcoming presidential and legislative election presents a once in a life opportunity for Liberians to elect a president and legislators who can liberate the country from the chains of poverty, unbearable healthcare services, messy education, poor infrastructure, wanton corruption, flagrant disregard for the rule of law, nepotism, etc. With at least twenty presidential candidates accredited by the National Elections Commission to contest at the 10 October polls, Liberians are faced with a choice between good and evil, as some of the very people who participated and led groups in destroying the country and pillaging its resources, are actively campaigning for elective posts for the purpose of solely protecting their ill-gotten wealth. And additionally maintain the status quo that has held Liberia down and its economy in a dire state throughout its post war era.

Forest-Depleted Ghana Turns to Liberia For Timber

A Ghanaian delegation is currently in Liberia to hold discussion with the Government of Liberia and other actors in the timber and forestry sectors regarding the possibility of Liberia exporting timber to Ghana.

Ghana, a heavy user of wood, is turning to Liberia for timber due to the depletion of its forests, reports say.
The deal is expected to commence as early as this month. Ghana’s Domestic Lumber Traders Association, the mother union of woodworkers in the country, according to Joy News, says the move is important to save the Ghana’s wood industry from collapse as they are having difficulty getting timber locally to process.

Senator Oscar Cooper - A Dent in Boakai-Nuquay Stronghold?

Oscar Cooper is not a household name compared to Alexander Cummings, Joseph Boakai, Charles Brumskine and Benoni Urey in Liberian politics, but he dismissed any of these candidates being a threat to his quest to becoming Liberia’s next President.

He also does not see himself the spoiler in the elections.Being the Senator of Margibi County with strong ties with B**g County, Senator Cooper’s presidential ambition may dent the chances of the Boakai-Nuquay ticket which is building a stronghold in the Kpelleh belt.

Alexander Cummings Challenges Senator Weah For Debate - Brands Him A Copy Cat

The standard bearer of the Alternative National Congress (ANC) Alexander Cummings has challenged Senator George Manneh Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) to show up at the next debate to defend his policies he outlined in his campaign manifesto.

“Let him show up in the next debate and let’s have the discussion in public."

"Let’s see who can articulate, let’s see who is clear on policies. If you read some of what they said, it’s a carbon copy of what we’ve been saying around taking out wastes, around redirecting funds.

Senate Passes Law to Make Liberia Single Currency Country

The House of Representatives has passed a law that will ensure that all monetary transactions in the country are done in Liberian dollars.

This means all transactions, including purchases sales and related business deals in the country will be bought using the country’s local currency. Liberia is currently a dual currency country, the U.S. dollars being the secondary, but the U.S. dollar has dominated the market, being the most demanded currency for purchases and payments, even at government entities.

LP’s Popularity Falls After CoC Ruling- Poll Shows | The New Democrat

The latest polls by the Liberian media and development enterprise, the Liberia Holding Consortium indicates the opposition Liberty Party declined after the Supreme Court nullified the National Elections Commission disqualification of its deputy leader.
The full bench of the Supreme Court of Liberia on July 19, ruled that the vice standard bearers of Liberty Party and the Alternative National Congress (ANC) violated the Code of Conduct for government employees and public officials but unanimously reversed the rejection and disqualification of the aspirants on grounds that their breach of the law was not substantial enough to warrant the punishment given to them by the National Elections Commission (NEC).

Alexander Cummings Emerging As Dark Horse in Liberia’s Presidential Race

At the end of a recent tour of the southeast, Alexander Cummings stopped in this emerging and enterprising city for a breather en route to a rally last Saturday in Gbarnga, B**g County, the home of his running mate, former Ambassador to the United States of America, Jeremiah Sulunteh.

The former Coca Cola Executive is looking to redefine political convention in Liberia’s Presidential Elections with a Jehovah’s Witness-style approach to campaigning and a resonating message that has brought him from the back of the line to front and center of the upcoming race. Voters in most counties across the country appear to be taking notice – and so are his main rivals. But does he have enough time to make up for his late arrival into a previously unchartered territory?

Liberia Votes 2017: Electorates Undecided Over Next President

Nearly fifty percent of Liberian electorates remain largely undecided about who they want as their next President ahead of Presidential and legislative elections this October.

Polling data collected by the regional-based Ads Services & Marketic and commissioned by FrontPageAfrica has found that an overwhelming majority of the registered voters were either undecided or said they didn’t know.

Almost half of the registered voters (49%) selected this option (Chart 9). This suggests that the race is wide open, that Liberians are not yet convinced by the obvious aspirants, and are keeping their options open.

Legislative Mercenarism: Aloysius Toe Condemns Liberia’s Supreme Court Impeachment Proceedings

A recent petition by a handful of disgruntled lawmakers (Senators Dan Morais, Peter Coleman and Jim Tornolah, and Representatives George Mulbah and Numene Bartekwah), calling for the impeachment of three Associate Justices of the Supreme Court of Liberia for judicial opinion which the Associate Justices recently rendered in the latest Code of Conduct case, is misguided, unthoughtful, violates Article 73 of the Liberian Constitution, and is reminiscent of political mercenerism – an attempt to arm-twist the judiciary in discharge of its duties.

Sherman Refutes Claims that He Masterminded Justices’ Impeachment | Liberian Observer

Following media reports that Senator Varney Sherman of Grand Cape Mount County was the mastermind behind the plan by some lawmakers to impeach three of the five justices of the Supreme Court, the senator yesterday described the allegation as “untrue, baseless and mere assumptions.” Sherman, who himself is a Supreme Court lawyer, said because his return from the United States of America, where he had a successful brain operation, coincided with some of his colleagues calling for the impeachment of the justices, some have drawn the connection to assume that he is behind the plot, which he said is unfair to him.

Senator Sherman made the clarification during a press conference at his Capitol Building office.

As More UP Strongmen Abandon Ship, Pres. Sirleaf Swears She’s Still On Board | Liberian Observer

The ensuing presidential and representative elections have already witness barrage of controversies ranging from crossing carpet to political parties, political parties in-fightings, especially the ruling Unity Party and the much topical and controversial Code of Conduct recently laid to rest — or so it seams — by the Supreme Court. All in all, it would be fair to say that 2017 electoral activities have been filled with tension, as well as surprising, if not mystical, occurrences. And many believe the person dictating the current electoral climate is no other than President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

And rightfully so, the President has maintained that she still support the presidential Vice President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, though recent occurrences suggest otherwise, pointing to the “visible crashes” within party.
