Hi, I'm dendrologist Casey Clapp, and this is my Back Log.
This week’s book is Douglas-Fir The West's Most Remarkable Tree by Steven F. Arno and Carly Fiedler.
A quick read for those of you who don't want to spend months and months reading a book, the title really explains it all.
Arno and Fiedler take a deep dive into the natural and cultural history of the most remarkable tree in the West, the Douglas-fir. Regardless of how familiar you are to Douglas-fir, this book will prove you wrong.
It's the Honda Civic of Western trees. It's got name recognition. It's chronically dependable, and it's everywhere.
This little piece of nonfiction goes into just the right amount of detail about this tree, and it kept surprising me, even though I thought I knew this tree backwards and forwards. Or should I say rootwards in firwards?
In fact, this book was the inspiration for us to cover the Douglas-fir a second time on a Completely Arbortrary, Excellent Adventure.
Not to mention, this is the kind of book that I love. An entire book dedicated to one tree, how it lives and who lives with it. Yes, please.
I will give this book 8.0 out of 10 Golden Tomes of Honor. So if you want to learn more about this spectacular specimen of a tree, go to arbortrarypod.com/books, pick yourself up a copy.
And that's the Back Log.
NEW EPISODE - Sacred Fig
We have a new episode for you! It’s the last of our summer vacation series, and it’s taking us to Sri Lanka, where we meet the Bodhi tree, the species under which the Buddha reached enlightenment.
Listen anywhere!
Potentially the greatest misunderstanding Casey and Alex have ever had. What tree are we talking about?! find out tomorrow!
