Do you really need a spotting scope for western hunting? If so, which one is the right one? (Spoiler alert: there are like a million answers to those questions)

I hunted without a spotter for years and was successful...then I bought one...then I bought a second one. Optics are one of the most crucial weapons in a western hunter's arsenal, so it's worth digging into the details a bit.

I just released a video where we dive into spotters and how to pick the right one for your preferred style of hunting. Check it out if you've been considering adding to your glassing game this year.

A spotting scope is one of the most expensive pieces of optics a hunter could ever buy, so you want to make sure you're choosing one that will actually help ...

I'm finally getting the chance to tell the story of the Arizona Coues Deer hunt I took both of my boys on! If you've ever hunted with youngsters (in this case, 10 & 13), then you'll relate to some of the shenanigans, for sure.

We spent two days in the wilderness hiking trails, glassing our brains out, and trying not to freeze. We turned up deer and javelina, and more than anything had a great time making memories and growing closer together as men. I'm so blessed to have these two young men in my life, and I can't wait for all the hunts we're still dreaming up for the future. Watch below...

COOLEST PODCAST EPISODE YET!!!

New episode of the Hunting Stories Podcast just dropped, and it's one of my favorite stories ever! This is Caleb Brewer - a wounded Green Beret who was given an AZ Bighorn Sheep tag at the last minute. It was deep in remote sheep country in Southern Arizona, and a great group of guys came together to help make this dream a reality.

On this episode, I have Caleb and the 2 Ryans - and .the.creature - who were with him on the hunt share the epic story of this old desert ram. Not only is it a really cool hunting story, but the camaraderie between these soldiers and the lengths they went to to help Caleb succeed on this hunt is absolutely amazing. You've got to check it out!

Teaching your kids how to hunt...I feel like over the years, I've made more mistakes than I've gotten things right. Since my oldest's first harvest this year, I've been reflecting a lot on what I could/should do differently as my middle son gets put in for his first draws in just a few months.

I put together a video with 5 things I learned over the past few years that should help any dad (or uncle, family friend, etc.) trying to help youngsters get into the world of hunting. Check out "what's new on youtube" at the link in bio to see it.

The beauty of being an Arizona hunter is that when the rest of the west is winding down their fall, we're just getting started. I'm already dreaming of cold, desert, backcountry adventures chasing bucks with my bow, and it feels like it's been far too long since I've slept in the dirt. (Oh, and the excuse to eat copious amounts of candy doesn't hurt either)

NEW PODCAST EPISODE!

This is me and my oldest son halfway back to the truck with a whole cow elk on our backs! That smile on his face is both because his pack is lighter than mine, but also ‘cause this was his first harvest ever.

The whole story can be heard on the latest episode of the Hunting Stories Podcast. Check it out at the link in bio

My oldest son finally made his first harvest this year! I couldn't be prouder of how he handled himself in the woods, how he handled the pressure of the moment, and how he packed his fair share of meat back to the truck.

To see is all unfold, give the film a watch..."Proud Dad" doesn't even begin to describe it!

I've spent years working to teach my kids how to hunt, and until this year we've had several great hunting adventures for javelina and mule deer, but my olde...

No more checkerboards of little squares and missing important sections…just one giant rectangle with everything you need in it!

Head over and check out their maps, cause right now they’re giving you all 50 states for $50 with a $50 credit to the gear shop (based on my math, that’s basically free). Use code LATE at checkout to snag your discount👊🏻

The film of my first-ever antelope hunt is now live!

There was a steep learning curve, and a surprising amount of setbacks along the way. Ultimately, everything lined up when this awesome buck came into the water I was sitting...unfortunately, that wasn't the end of the story.

Check out the film to see how it all went down👊

The ones that get away always stick in your mind more than the ones you harvest (at least for me). I just got back from my first-ever antelope hunt here in AZ, and what an amazing experience it was!

I'd tell you all about it, but I just dropped the latest episode of the Hunting Stories Podcast which tells the whole story...so head over to the link in bio to give it a listen.

Late to the Game has had a couple good ol’ huntin’ rigs over its 5 year history (wow, has it been that long?). Big ol’ Jeep…purple ol’ truck…they’ve been fine rigs that got me there and back MOST OF THE TIME.

Well, circumstances finally warranted a significant upgrade, so I’d like to introduce you all to the new rig! This is going to be with me on a pile of new adventures, and I can’t wait to load it up and put it through the paces in just a couple days for my archery antelope hunt.

And as if it wasn’t cool enough, I managed to find one with a manual transmission! Aside from being a way more enjoyable driving experience, it also means virtually no one under the age of 35 can steal it. Win-win!

Anyone else spending all their free time dropping pins on maps to get ready for the fall?

I'm finally heading up to scout for my AZ archery antelope hunt, and I've basically been living on maps coming up with plans A-Z. Can't wait to finally put eyes on the area and put a plan together for next month!

Got all the layers and areas I need downloaded to the phone, and I'm getting my gear sorted out for a couple days of all the driving, hiking, and glassing I can stand. All I need now is some speedgoats to show up.

What upcoming hunt are you obsessing over right now?

NEW PODCAST EPISODE!

I just had on the podcast telling the story of this incredible muley buck all the way from Alberta Canada. While I’m pretty sure any hunter would be proud to put his hands on a buck like this, this happened to be Keith’s FIRST muley and his first muley hunt to boot 🤯

It’s a great story and I had a blast talking to Keith, so head to the link in bio to check out the Hunting Stories Podcast

NEW PODCAST EPISODE!

After a late night at last night, I woke up extra early to make sure I had the chance to connect with Bob and Jay. They are the authors of the book “Proper Care & Feeding of a Huntin’ Buddy.”

These guys were hilarious and I had a blast talking with them and turning them loose to tell some hilarious stories - all the while poking fun at each other.

It’s a terrific episode and I’m so pumped that I’m already getting set up to have them back on the show real soon!

In keeping with the whole "late to the game" theme, I somehow didn't purchase a digiscoping solution until this year (I know, I know)! I always just tried to hold my phone up to the eyepiece and get however many fleeting seconds of actual footage I could before I messed up the angle and couldn't see it anymore.

Seeing as I have binos and two different spotters I switch between depending on the hunt, I wanted to find one solution that could switch between all three instead of buying three different adapters.

Turns out, such a thing already exists and is made by - I had messed around with it at the range a few times, but Idaho was the first real hunt I had the chance to use it on. The thing is awesome!!! Simple to pack, easy and quick to deploy, and the one adapter works with all three of my optics...it's exactly what I wanted!

If you're looking into a new digiscoping solution, you should absolutely give these guys a look!

I finally got ahead of the schedule and ordered better backcountry coffee! Every hunt I mean to do this, then forget, and find myself in the grocery store the day before settling for Starbucks Via again.

I brought both the coffee bags and instant…both were DELICIOUS! If I had to pick one, I preferred the roast of the bag just a bit more, but this was also easily the best instant coffee I’ve ever had as well.

Lesson learned: Good coffee in the backcountry will absolutely change your world!

13/05/2022

To be honest, I never saw the point of gaiters for hunting. It's probably being an Arizona boy where running into water and/or nasty biting insects just isn't that common...I kinda thought they just looked like you were hunting in a 1920's speakeasy for no apparent reason.

BUT, after spending a week in tick country during prime tick season, I finally get the appeal. Fortunately, tick counts were low this year (at least where we were), but it gave huge peace of mind to have some extra security around the prime entry point for those disease-carrying little blood-suckers!

Who else is using gaiters out there, and what's the main reason you rock 'em? Comment below...

Spring Bear in Idaho was probably the most challenging hunt I’ve ever been on! Weather every day but one. Lots of hours in a tent riding out storms. Some of the steepest mountains I’ve ever climbed.

BUT

I can’t wait to go back!!! The country was beautiful and the bears were plentiful!

New episode of the Hunting Stories Podcast drops tomorrow telling the whole story. Click the link in bio to make sure you’re subscribed and you can hear the whole story👊🏻

First, it was ultralight, durable, re-usable game bags that I immediately fell in love with. Then they came out with a few knives and I went from the replaceable blade razor-style knife (sharp, yes...prone to breaking, also yes) to the fixed blade Serac. Still razor sharp, edge touches up effortlessly, and weighs only 2.1 oz!

I haven't carried cheese-cloth game bags or a different skinning knife in couple years now, and I don't see myself ever going back.

NEW PODCAST EPISODE!
On Season 2 | Episode 7 I got to talk to Ryan over at about an incredible backcountry moose hunt in Colorado. The story has horses, near death experiences, missed shots, and redemption...it's everything a good hunting story should be!

After that, we got to have a great conversation about hunters, anti-hunters, and what we can do as a community to support each other and speak up for our way of life. It's a great episode and I'm excited to share it with you!

Somewhere right before Fall kicked off last year, I started to see a few signs of target panic. It was every bit as terrifying as the name implies!

I've tried ignoring it and I've tried quick fixes...both only seemed to make it worse. I finally decided to really dig in and work on it over the last month or so, and while it's not totally gone (and I'm not sure it ever will be), it's finally feeling so much better.

Gonna fine tune the process a bit and then put out some content explaining how to beat it if you ever find yourself in the same boat, but I just wanted to give a little hope to other archers who may be struggling a bit...it can be fixed!

Buy the best glass you can afford.

We've all heard the advice, but does it really make that big of a difference? Is it really worth spending 10x as much for some really nice binos?

I just dropped a video sharing what I learned after years behind a pair of Vortex Diamondbacks and finally switching over to a pair of Vortex Razors. The difference is huge, but it might not be for the reasons you would typically think.

Click below to find out what happened!

When it comes to western hunting, binoculars are key! You'll often hear people say "buy the best glass you can afford," but is the extra cost really worth it...

As the sun sets on yet another AZ archery javelina season, I wonder when I'll finally arrow (and recover...lousy 2020 season) a stink pig. Such a small, blind animal that has found a way to evade me thus far.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Either way, deer season is still running and I think I can squeeze in one more semi-quick backcountry adventure to see if I can put another buck in the freezer. I love this time of year where the weather is nice and there's more than one reason to be glassing country with my bow sitting by my side.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

What about you? Any cool success stories from January so far?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

WHY are You Out There? | Hunting for the Wrong Reasons

I realized that my head wasn’t in the game. I also realized I was no longer having ANY fun. Don’...

24/10/2019

I’m always a huge proponent of camping smart in the backcountry and not putting your camp in a high-traffic predator area. Well, on my last bear hunt I hiked in at night with over 2,000 feet of elevation gain, so I just dumped my stuff at the first flat spot I came to near where I wanted to be. Left camp the next morning to start glassing and found this right in the middle of the trail 9 STEPS from my camp!!! Certainly wouldn’t have slept as well that night if I had known that was sitting there!⠀
Double-tap if you’re always on high bear alert when you’re out there solo 👍🏻⠀⠀⠀

Pretty sure this isn’t exactly what had in mind for the meat compartment when they designed the EXO Pack, but backcountry hunting in the desert requires some ingenuity! Packing in water for a multi-day excursion is possibly the worst...actually, I’ve also had to come off the mountain too early cause I didn’t bring enough, so maybe packing gallons in is the 2nd worst 😂
Comment below, what are your hacks for dealing with water in arid environments????

10/10/2019

Sometimes in a week long hunt you only get one moment at full draw, and few things feel worse than having to let that arrow down because the elk refused to take that last step into your shooting lane. But, as I finish putting all the footage together, I’m still incredibly grateful for the opportunity just to try!!! ⠀
Side note: that Fusion pattern just disappears out there!⠀

08/10/2019

Trust me, I’d always prefer lying prone when shooting long range, but hunting doesn’t always allow you to get into your favorite shooting position. As I dust off the rifle for bear season, I’m trying to be intentional about shooting in a few different positions that I may find myself in. Turns out...it’s difficult!!!⠀
Double tap if you’re trying to shake off the rust this season as well 👍🏻⠀⠀⠀

One of my biggest concerns for my CO elk hunt was performing (or surviving) at 10-11,000ft when home is at 1,300. I decided to try this Altitude Advantage from based on advice from my buddy . I split the bottle with my camera guy and we both felt great!!! It doesn’t make the air any thicker, but no headaches, nausea, or bonking on the mountain...I’m now a firm believer in the stuff whenever I’m headed to the high country. (Plus, they’re a local AZ company)⠀
