Austin Zhang Studio

Welcome to Austin Zhang Studio! This will be my platform for sharing a new artistic perspective, informed by the world around me and not just my Blue Note records (which I still love, of course). I will still be playing a lot of saxophone, but I'll be filming, photographing, writing, speaking, and generally expressing myself in any way I want to.

Providing this involves countless hours spent composing, practicing, rehearsing, recording, mixing, mastering, writing, filming, and editing – almost of which is done by myself. After dedicating so many hours and heart to these projects, why do I put them on the internet for free? I'm just not interested in commodifying my art. Today's music industry, values 2-4 minute radio hits that have their "catchy hook" within the first minute. The modern scene needs music for drowning out awkward flirting at bars, filling awkward silence in elevators, and pumping up joggers. While I love many radio hits and do think many popular musicians today are creating valuable art, I don't believe my worth as an artist should be determined by the number of Spotify playlists I'm included in. I create music for love. Inspired by my friends, mentors, and heros, I won't release a song until I truly feel it represents a piece of me. I know that that's the case when things starts to pains me. When my demons flood my mind and the very thought of openly sharing such a personal statement begins to terrify me, I know that my heart is there in the music. I hope that you all of you can find inspiration in my vulnerability, beauty in my song, and smiles in my artist pursuits! Thanks so much for being here, just that fact that you are here on this page hopefully means that you've enjoyed something you've seen from me and that in it of itself already fills me joy.
