Just saw Conclave and it’s an intriguing watch. Ralph Fiennes delivers a powerful, restrained performance that holds the emotional core of the film, while Stanley Tucci brings his signature finesse to the role of a rival cardinal. The dynamic between them is magnetic, and it’s a joy to see two seasoned actors spar with such intensity.
While I wasn’t familiar with the Robert Harris novel it’s based on, I found Edward Berger’s direction captivating. He transforms what could’ve been a straightforward political thriller into a tense, atmospheric drama, set almost entirely within the walls of the Vatican. The stakes feel high without relying on over-the-top theatrics, which I found refreshing. Berger’s vision is subtle yet gripping, drawing out the tension and mystery surrounding the election of a new Pope.
Visually, Conclave leans into its setting, using the grandeur of the Vatican to contrast the intense personal and political struggles of the cardinals. It’s paced deliberately, which might not appeal to everyone, but for those who appreciate a slow burn, it’s a rewarding experience.
This could be a sleeper pick for awards season, particularly for Fiennes and Tucci. Definitely worth checking out if you’re into smart, character-driven dramas.
