Method acting's current torchbearer, Joaquin Phoenix, displays a wide array of emotions in a short amount of time in this particular scene from Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master".
Freddie Quell (the protagonist) might wander throughout the whole film in search of a master, but the film atleast tells us one thing in hindsight-
That Phoenix is surely, a master of his own in the realms of acting.

Greetings everyone! Today we bring you a brief introduction of the bizarre cinematic effect Dolly Zoom.

🔸The Dolly Zoom is one of the most disorienting and flashy camera techniques of all time. It employs a lot of principles of filmmaking, enhances the emotion of a scene, and can be used in subtle places you may not even notice.

🔸The Dolly Zoom is sometimes called the Vertigo Effect after Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 film “Vertigo” where it was first used by the cinematographer Irmin Roberts. Since then, it has been used countless times in motion picture, but sadly most of the time only as a trick shot. Filmmakers often use it because it looks cool but the Dolly Zoom is only effective when it visually amplifies the internal emotional state of a character’s critical story moment.

🔸In “Vertigo”, the Dolly Zoom is used to give a sense of height and depth; the final result is a dizzying optical illusion— it is unsettling, disturbing and true to the moment. In “Goodfellas”, as Henry Hill’s whole world is crushing and his paranoia growing, Scorsese used the vertigo effect to intensify this paranoia. This effect has even found its way into animation. Brad Bird uses it extensively in his films. In “Ratatouille”, as Remi relates to Chef Gusteau, the Dolly Zoom is no longer used to disorient the viewer but to make them get physically closer together, indicating the birth of a relationship.

It’s clear that emotional investment is the key to making this specialized shot work and not to come across as just a cheap trick shot.
