not sure if I wanna directly connect reddit or steam to the page yet but definitely considering it. This post will probably remain the pinned post for now and may be periodically edited.
TLDR of this post: this page is for streams, youtube vids, and possibly other content with a strong focus on Doom Eternal but topics about gaming in general is also gonna be a thing. I dont expect or even really want to ever get a large following from this stuff.
if you're my friend in real life, or if you're not but are one of the fb friends i shamelessly mass-invited, know that you have no obligation to follow my channels or watch my streams/vids. If we're friends you might feel sort of obligated to support this whole thing in some capacity, and of course, I appreciate it if you do. but if you just dont give a s**t, I totally get it.
You will also find links to my streams, twitch & youtube channels etc. and probably textposts with musings about doom eternal and video games in general.
I also enjoy helping other doom eternal players improve their gameplay, wherever they're currently at. So if you have any questions, feel free to ask, and if you want me to critique your gameplay without being a dick about it or showing it publicly, send me a clip. I cant promise i will respond to messages sent to the page right away, but consider my inbox open.
LONG VERSION: I figure I will post a bit of a mission statement to start this whole thing and explain what i wanna do with the content I intend to create, why I wanna do it, and maybe shed some light on why I cant stop talking about doom eternal so much.
I've been playing video games my whole life, and recording some of my gameplay on youtube for about a year now. I've wanted to dip my toe into streaming and actually put the effort into making "real" youtube videos with scripting, editing, etc. for a long time, and am finally starting to actually do that.
The content here, my streams, and youtube videos I have planned will be largely focused on doom eternal. DE is my favorite game of all time. I have an intense passion for the game and literally cannot shut up about it anyways, so I want to funnel that into something constructive that can reach people who are interested, instead of constantly annoying my friends and one small facebook group. I want to show people how cool doom eternal is, of course, and maybe flex my skills a bit, but also produce content that may be interesting, informative, or thought provoking to people who play DE as well as those who dont.
Besides Doom Eternal itself, in my long form youtube videos I also will talk about game design and development decisions that make games the way they are, and our relationship to games.
Doom Eternal was so good it got me thinking about how such a game could be made, why I liked it so much, and why I liked or disliked certain other games.
This sort thinking was aided by how the devs talked about their game in a passionate and confident way that clearly communicated their vision during development, then delivered on their promises, releasing an incredibly polished final product that was laser focused on making that vision a reality. They then continued to support the game with free content and engage with the community well after release, put out 2 excellent DLCs, and just did so much more than the bare minimum. They could have totally gotten away with the bare minimum, too. If they made another game that was basically doom 2016 with a couple minor additions and some new enemies, that would be phoning it in, but it wouldnt even be bad. Doom 2016 was great, and the sequel just being more doom 2016 wouldnt have been a bad game. It would sell well, and wouldnt cause too many people to complain. Many studios would have hoped to just make a sequel that isnt significantly worse after a game llike 2016, but id software recognized that although doom 2016 was great, it was also flawed in significant ways, and wanted to make the best game they possibly could. Contrast this with their publisher, Bethesda, who repeatedly rereleases skyrim at full price with almost no changes, and all around does literally less than the bare minimum, desecrates their beloved IPs further with every release since morrowind, and relies on the modding community to fix their broken, unfinished games instead of conducting proper QA or generally giving a s**t at all. When making Fallout 3, ostensibly a first person shooter as well as an RPG, they added an aim button with zoom, but didnt bother to include FU***NG IRONSIGHTS. its mind-boggling. But enough "bethesda bad". The point is the way id conducted themselves every step of the way with doom eternal restored some of my hope for the game industry and made the incompetence, laziness, and greed of their publisher, and the many other major devs that are just as bad, look even more inexcusable. their success proved that big-name studios didnt have to do anything but actually put in effort, and make a good game that people wanted to play in order to make a bunch of money.
Besides the fact that its conspicuously well-designed, and the devs talk about its design really openly, you see things as game design choices a bit more naturally because of Eternal's unabashedly "video-gamey" nature. Since the combat is so much the top priority, aesthetics, world-building and such often get sacrificed at the altar of the gameplay.
You see things as parts of a game more clearly because the game doesnt even try to hide it. There is no possible explanation that makes any sort of sense for why chainsaw kills reload all your guns at once or how lighting demons on fire gives you armor, except that its a part of the gameplay loop that works with the combat. They dont try to explain it in the lore because any sort of in-universe justification for how this happens would be stupid and pointless. Just like how most of the arenas dont look like rooms that would ever exist anywhere outside a video game, but are clearly just arenas to parkour around and kill demons in. the game doesnt try to explain why there are big yellow poles sticking out of random walls, because the answer is obvious. So you can swing off of them. it exists purely to serve a gameplay function. Stuff like that.
All this stuff combined made me really think about games in general in ways i never had. So I wanna explore that.
things like:
What makes a game fun? what is fun, even? What is the role of difficulty and challenge in video games? How does that relate to accessibility? what is good/bad difficulty? How do games educate the player about their systems? What should they flat-out tell you, and what should you have to figure out on your own? What are some of the different reasons people play games? Why do some people play certain games for massive amounts of time? How do games keep us playing and keep us engaged? all of that kinda stuff.
these arent each necessarily going to be a video, and there is no set release schedule for videos. they will be released sporadically, likely months apart. None are close to being finished atm, but I have a few scripts in the works. There will be shorter scripted vids, and there already are lots of gameplay videos on my channel of all different lengths. But my focus for scripted content at the moment is on making a few in-depth videos each probably about an hour long. As you can tell by this write-up, I have a lot to say about this stuff.
Since I've accumulated a great deal of knowledge and mastery of Doom Eternal in my hundreds of hours playing it, a secondary aim of this page will be to share that in order to help players who might be struggling or just want to learn more. If youre having trouble with something in the game, not understanding something, or have any other sort of questions, I'll do my best to help you out. I'm also willing to offer constructive, mockery-free criticism of your gameplay if you send a recording my way. I'm no sylar, and I dont have full UN completion yet. But I'm working towards full UN, and I did SGN ML on UN a second time without lockons, superweapons, or saving throw. so if you're also a UN player I dont know if I can help you too much, but I'm pretty good, and if you're anywhere between an ITYTD player and a Nightmare player who does pretty well overall but still has a lot of room for improvement, I can probably offer some insight. I dont play battlemode or know much about it. cant help you there.
if any sort "community" or following results from this, I want it to be a positive and inclusive one. My content here isnt gonna be overtly political, nor will it be strictly moderated or free of profanity. but I will not tolerate elitism and bigotry. I've regrettably been guilty of a bit of elitism in the past but I've come to realize its something I want to combat in the doom community and gaming community overall. I actually plan on defending Dean Takahashi in a future video, which should get some fun comments.
really looking forward to getting the ball rolling on all this stuff
