It is, for me at least, extremely sobering to see a scholar of the Holocaust come to a conclusion I am sure I not the only person to have reached: that today's Israel has terrifying parallels to Germany in the early 1930s:

Israel is guilty of "genocide, ethnic-cleansing & annexation" in Gaza; the US is "totally complicit"; Israel faces "a terrible future" & could "implode": Pro...

I voted, this afternoon over coffee and two election booklets the size of phone directories for a small city, at a museum cafe overlooking Kara E-Walker's timely "Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine). A Respite for the Weary Time-Traveler. Featuring a Rite of Ancient Intelligence Carried out by The Gardeners Toward the Continued Improvement of the Human Specious."

Yes, I voted for Kamala.

Though I wanted to vote for Jill Stein - despite issues I have with some Green Party policies - but then, I long ago gave up seeking perfection of any kind in any political party; I just don't want to vote for one that supports mass slaughter of women and children by an ethnically supremacist state - Nancy? Joe? Kamala? Are you listening?

But when choosing between a party with a history of at least sometimes changing its policies toward greater decency, and a party that seeks to subjugate the entire country to a quasi-medieval theocracy, the choice is really not all that difficult.

I think.

Of course, we'll see. If we're lucky.

"They [that is, neoliberals] are in favor of private tyranny."

This sums up neoliberalism as a political philosophy remarkably well.

It is also why I may not be voting for Kamala ("I am a capitalist") Harris (aside from her weak stance on Israel's predation on Palestinians).

A fascinating essay-review (by David P. Goldman, of Between Heidegger and Novalis, by Peter Hanly):

(Quoted from the review:)

"Secular philosophers cannot easily dispense with Heidegger because they want the same thing that he wanted, namely “to make Man the ‘Master of Being,’” as Arendt noted. That is also what Arendt wanted, and she helped de-Nazify Heidegger in full knowledge of what he was. Arguably, Heidegger’s influence now is greater than ever; through his doctoral student Herbert Marcuse and Jean-Paul Sartre, Heidegger is the inspiration for today’s endemic belief that identity is a matter of self-invention. Heidegger is the grandfather of identity politics, of radical subjectivism, and rampant irrationality. As in Unreason now runs amok. This is Heidegger’s inheritance."

Martin Heidegger promised to make man the Master of Being. Perhaps we should blame Heidegger, not Marx, for putting our culture on the path to decline.

Is there such a thing as Absolute Evil? What do you do when you are faced with it? What do you do when your government is its engine? What do you do when you discover that you, through your tax dollars, are funding it, feeding it, empowering it, making it triumph?

And where does it end?

Has anyone seen this?

I think it's really quite interesting.

We might be able to cure ourselves of rabid capitalism (or is that "capitalist rabies"? But I digress) if we present it as an international health crisis that makes Covid look, by contrast, like nothing more than a bad case of the sniffles?

Despite a well-established social gradient for many mental disorders, there is evidence that individuals near the middle of the social hierarchy suffer higher rates of depression and anxiety than those at the top or bottom. Although prevailing indicators of socioeconomic status (SES) cannot detect o...

Biden could stop this with a single phone call.

My contempt for the drivers of our foreign policy knows no bounds.
