Opera and Ballet Theatre, Yerevan
The Opera and Ballet Theatre is one of the most outstanding landmarks of in Armenia. Located in the heart of Yerevan, it was designed by the architect Alexander Tamanian, who connected two auditoriums in a uniform semicircular building in unusual manner. While building this artistic monument, Tamanian used the best traditions of medieval Armenian architecture while stylizing traditional national ornaments.
The theater part of the building was finished in 1939. In 1963, the big hall of the philharmonic society was added. The building in its present condition appeared after the reconstruction of 1980. The theatre capacity is 1,260 people; the philharmonic society hall can hold 1,400. Both halls have the shape of an amphitheatre and are distinguished by magnificent acoustics. The project was awarded the "Grand Prix" at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1937.
The square in front of the Opera building is decorated by sculptures of the poet O. Tumanian and the composer A. Spendiarian. The square in front of the Opera House has a statue of Aram Khachaturian, and one of the halls in the theater itself is also named after him.
Since it was opened, the Armenian National Opera & Ballet Theatre has performed more than 200 different operas and ballets by Armenian, Russian and Western European composers. The theatre company has performed in more than 20 countries, e.g. in Russia, Spain, Lebanon, United States, Greece, Germany. In 1956, the theatre received the status of National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.

Easter
Easter is a public holiday in some countries and one of them is Armenia. Armenians have a strong and remarkable connection to God. As we are the first country to embrace Christianity in 301 AD, we keep the religious traditions and customs that came from many years. Easter time is generally called Surb Zatik in Armenia, which connotes "being confined from sins." During this time, Armenian Apostolic churches acclaim the resurrection of Jesus Christ. As, when Jesus was crucified, humanity persevered through the absolution of sins. Easter is admired in Armenia well before its date. There are various traditions related to Easter. The first, being the course of action of planting wheat seeds. After the seeds are grown like green grass, they put the red-colored eggs on them, symbolizing new life and birth. The eggs should be painted particularly in red as they address the shed blood of Jesus. While celebrating Easter with Armenians you will moreover see another customary dish on the table that is an unquestionable requirement. It is the Armenian trout with red wine.

Wildlife in Armenia
Animals are very important part of our life. Armenians are also very like and protect animals and in Armenia also you can meet animals like wild boars, porcupines, various lizards, snakes and numerous species of birds. Endangered species living in Armenia are the Caucasian bear, Caucasian bearded goat, the Armenian mouflon (sheep) and the leopard.
Now a little about animals that you can meet in Armenia:
Fauna in Armenia is diverse given the country's relatively small geographic size, owing to the varied habitats created by the area's mountainous terrain. Armenia is an important area for migratory animals, about 350 different bird species were recorded in the country. Many of the world's domesticated animals originated in or near Armenia, and the mouflon, the ancestor of domesticated sheep, is present there. Research suggests that about a quarter of the animal species in Armenia are internationally endangered. The mouflon is suffering a great population decline due to poaching and habitat loss, and the Sevan trout, which once made up thirty percent of the fish in Lake Sevan, have virtually disappeared.
Southern and south-western Armenia remains the last stronghold of the Persian leopard in the Caucasus, in part due to the region being connected with the leopard population in Iran. The total population in Armenia is thought to number 10-20 individuals, including adults, sub-adults and cubs.

“As surprising as it may seem, France does not have a cultural operator in Armenia. The cultural events linked to France are today organized by the Embassy and Armenian cultural institutions, most often in partnership,” the Ambassador said in a Facebook post.

He reminded that under the aegis of Presidents Emmanuel Macron and Armen Sarkissian, in October 2018 during the Francophonie Summit in Yerevan a declaration of intent was signed between the French Government, the Aznavour Foundation and the Alliance Française in Armenia on setting up a French cultural and language center, which will eventually become a French Institute.

This French Institute will be located in the Aznavour Center, which will be completely redeveloped by the Aznavour Foundation in order to accommodate the Institute and, of course, the long-awaited Charles Aznavour Museum.

“Located at the top of Cascade in the heart of Yerevan, the Aznavour Center will host one of the most beautiful French Institutes in the world … with a breathtaking view of Mount Ararat!” Ambassador Lacôte said.

He noted that the center aims to unite all those working for cultural relations between France and Armenia.

Armenian wedding traditions and customs
Armenians are known for their faithful commitment to certain customs and traditions. As such, weddings here are joyous and formal occasions filled with well-preserved traditions. Historically, the celebration lasted for a week, but this has now changed.
Because 93% of Armenians are part of the Armenian Apostolic Church, most wedding ceremonies are dedicated to God and the church. If you’re going to an Armenian wedding, or you’re marrying into an Armenian family, here are some of the most common traditions and customs you should know about:
1. The Khosk-Kap
It is respectable for the groom to ask the bride’s family for her hand in marriage before he proposes. This ‘asking of the hand’ is called a Khosk -Kap and entails a formal dinner organized by the families of both the bride and groom-to-be. It is usually held at the bride’s house and the families are expected to bring floral arrangements, chocolate and Armenian Cognac. Tea is served at the start, but no one should drink it until the bride’s family has agreed to the marriage. If agreed, both sides of the family then talk to one another and start to plan the wedding.
2. The Engagement Ceremony
Engagement parties are usually not an essential; however in the Armenian culture, it is a necessity! During the engagement soiree; a ring, a bracelet, earrings, a red dress and a veil would be put into a tray in front of the groom to present to his bride. Each item symbolizes a vow that the bride is going to take. The bracelet on the wrist indicates she will be faithful to her husband and the red dress and veil is a promise that she will be a true bride to the man she is marrying.
3. The Pillow Sharing
A popular Armenian saying that is used regularly is “May you grow old on one pillow.” This is a way to wish that the bride and groom will stay together forever and stitching this on a pillow as a wedding favor is extremely common in the Armenian culture.
4. The Red Dress
Traditionally, Armenian brides wore a red silk dress with a red and green cardboard crown. The crown is shaped like wings and covered with feathers which symbolizes a dove. Doves are an important part of an Armenian wedding, with these birds released during the reception to show love and fortune throughout the newlywed’s married years. The color palette of red and green is a symbol of life and sacrifice to your groom, making it the perfect palette for the bride-to-be.

Armenian dishes: Dolma
Our culture, our traditions, and our language are the foundations upon which we build our identity. Traditional foods make a big part of the culture. People frequently associate various nations or countries with certain foods. For example, many people associate Italy with pizza and pasta. For Armenia, the one-of-a-kind Dolma or Tolma is symbolic, so it’s most likely associated with this delicious food. This is the reason why in Armenia a festival dedicated to it takes place every year.
WHAT IS DOLMA?
Dolma is a traditional Armenian non-vegetarian dish made of ground beef, mixed with rice and spices folded in grape or cabbage leaves, and vegetables. Dolma festival has its unique place among the most festivals organized in Armenia. The purpose of the event is to popularize traditional Armenian dishes. Dolma is the favorite dish of Armenians. It is cooked both on holidays and on ordinary days. Armenians know more than 50 dolma recipes.

DOLMA WITH GRAPE LEAVES IS THE MORE SOPHISTICATED ONE. THE ONES WITH CABBAGE AND EGGPLANT ARE CALLED “SUMMER DOLMA”.

Other than “summer” dolma, there are also “pasuts” dolma and “sut” dolma.
Pasuts dolma is a vegetarian dish served for fasting. There is no meat in this kind of dolma. Instead, it includes beans, various peas, rice, lots of spices stuffed in sour cabbage. Usually, Pasuts dolma is comparatively large.

________________________________________

Sut (means “fake” in Armenian) dolma is made of rice, oil, and spices. It looks like real grape leaves dolma, but there is no meat, hence the name “fake”. Just like all kinds of dolma, this one is also very tasty, and although it takes relatively a long time to prepare, one eats it really quickly.
USUALLY, ARMENIANS SERVE THE ACTUAL GRAPE LEAVE DOLMA WITH GARLIC AND MATSOUN (THE NATIONAL SOUR YOGURT).
Armenians know more than 50 dolma recipes. And it is no surprise that we also have a dolma festival, where you will get to know almost all types of Armenian dolma.
During the festival, the best cooks of the country and participants from different regions of Armenia present their version of dolma, and after tasting, the experts announce the winners of the festival.
Food tasting and selling, as well as various events and competitions, are organized. National songs and dances accompany the celebration.
