Sarah’s story is inextricably linked to Hagar’s story, one that resulted in exploitation of the vulnerable and complex implications. Too often we have interpreted that story as one of xenophobia and rejection of the other. It is crucial that we understand God does not reject and abandon Hagar and Ishmael. Rather, God must draw a boundary between Godself and the institution of slavery. God cannot make a covenant with slavery nor endorse the perpetuation of captivity. God’s story for both these women leads to freedom and promises fulfilled.
