The world's most powerful MRI machine, the Iseult, has started scanning human brains. Developed by the French Atomic Energy Commission, the Iseult has a magnetic field strength of 11.7 Teslas, much higher than the 1.5-3 Teslas of conventional MRI machines. This allows it to capture incredibly detailed brain images in just 4 minutes, with a resolution down to 0.2 mm.

The Iseult has already scanned the brains of 20 healthy volunteers, producing stunning images. These high-resolution scans will help scientists better understand how the brain works and provide insights into consciousness and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The Iseult can detect subtle chemical signatures in the brain that regular MRI machines cannot, opening up new avenues for diagnosis and treatment.

While the Iseult's large size (5m long and 132 tons) and complexity may limit where it can be deployed, the breakthrough imaging capabilities it provides make it a valuable new tool for neuroscience research and clinical applications. 🚄💨 California is leading the way in sustainable transportation with a $127 million deal for six additional zero-emission, hydrogen-powered passenger trains. This brings the state’s fleet of hydrogen fuel cell trains to 10, with options for 19 more. These trains are not only more efficient and affordable than traditional ones, but they also minimize pollution as they produce just water and heat as byproducts. 🌍💚

The investment is part of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s $10 billion zero-emission vehicle package. The hydrogen-powered trains, manufactured by Swiss company Stadler, are expected to begin operation in 2027, connecting Merced and Sacramento and linking to California’s future high-speed rail service.
