The new helipad at the Launceston General Hospital has recently undergone testing of the Deck Integrated Fire Fighting System (DIFFS), lighting, and test landings/take offs.

On Tuesday 1st October the fire fighting and lighting systems were tested. (Photos kindly supplied by Rodney Houghton)

Followed by the first ever landing on Monday 7th October, several landings/take offs followed in differing levels of light. (Drone image kindly supplied by Cameron Jones Visuals)

The new helipad will greatly reduce the time it takes for patients to get to the hospital, as the current situation involves patients landing at Launceston Airport and then being transported by ambulance to the LGH after the previous helipad did not meet CASA requirements.

Members of Northern Road Policing Services as well as officers from various uniform divisions and transport inspectors from the Department of State Growth conducted a day of action on Wednesday targeting high-volume traffic areas.

The high-visibility operation focused on vehicle defects, speeding offences, mobile phone and seat belt offences, inattention, and drink and drug driving.

Officers intercepted vehicles at 12 sites across Northern Tasmania including Sidmouth, Mowbray, South Launceston, St Helens, Scamander, Campbell Town, George Town, Ravenswood, Fingal, St Marys, Exeter, Westbury and on the Bass Highway, East Tamar Highway, Midlands Highway, and Esk Main Road.

These sites resulted in:
- 364 Random breath tests (no drink drivers)
- 8 oral fluid tests conducted with 1 positive result
- 3 people using mobile phones
- 7 unregistered vehicles
- 56 speed infringements
- 6 unlicensed drivers
- 2 suspended drivers
- 5 people not wearing seat belts
- 1 unrestrained child
- 1 Provisional driver not displaying P Plates
- 35 defect notices issued
- 1 person charged with stealing

Sergeant Benjamin Kromkamp said the focus of the operation was to encourage safe driver behaviour.

“Keeping road users safe is our priority when conducting targeted traffic operations, and we know that when our operations are highly visible – and road users observe police conducting road safety activities – motorists are more inclined to practice safe behaviour on our roads,” he said.

“We will continue to conduct high-visibility operations across the district and the state. Our operations are about keeping the community safe and that is why road safety remains a priority for Tasmania Police.”

Anyone with information about unsafe driving behaviour should contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 33 000 or online at crimestopperstas.com.au
