I've been writing book of two of my Hope Texas trilogy for over 5 years now (I got about halfway finished with the script just before 2020). Of course we all know the s**t show that was 2020 and beyond, so I sort of lost focus and haven't really been able to get my mind straight in writing more on it until late last year.

One of the reasons I've had a hard time coming back to it is because I was thinking of completely ditching everything I'd written before and starting over. The first book (the one I am drawing now Hope Texas Graphic Novel) introduces everyone and gets us to love the characters. Book two ratchets up the action and intensity of the story introducing concepts like Astral Projection, time travel and maybe even aliens while still remaining a very human and grounded story over the course of three 200+ page books.

All my life I've been a believer in Jesus Christ and God, but like most believers - I'd guess - I'd never read The Bible from cover to cover. Like most people, I've cherry picked passages and scripture and never really understood the whole context of the message of Jesus Christ and God's creation until the last 5 years. I'm on my second reading now and it's changed my life in a lot of ways.

We're increasingly living in a world that is moving away from The Bible, from Christianity and from God - in my opinion. I think some of the reason for this is t.v. shows and books like Ancient Aliens and Chariots of the Gods (and the fact that my generation didn't instill real Godly values in our kids and just "let them find what they believed in"). In college all of this stuff was harmless nonsense as I saw it. I mean, everyone I knew were believers - even if we weren't exactly practicing - and no one bought into this Ancient Aliens bulls**t. It wasn't until the History channel and Ancient Aliens started floating the notion of the Book of Enoch being cannon in the Hebrew Bible and that what Ezekiel was describing could be aliens rather than God, that I started to raise an eyebrow to all of this.

I'm afraid that in the last two to three decades nonsense like this has held sway over two generations that may now seriously question whether The Bible is from God or aliens, which brings me back to Hope Texas book two.

I love the Ancient Aliens show, the Why Files and all of the conspiracy theory nonsense so I wanted to put my spin on all of it too, but I don't want to lend to stories that may be leading people astray, so I decided to rewrite Hope Texas book 2. The problem with that is that I didn't know what to write that would tie everything together from book one, keeping a human story to it all and keep things exciting too. I also didn't want to write a 'Christian' story that fell flat on story and was too heavy handed on message that it was just bad, or worse, boring.

So, I've struggled with this for months now. I've prayed on it and as I am rereading what I originally wrote I'm thinking that I'll stay the course with what I have. The first Hope Texas book is so unlike ANYTHING I've ever written before and, honestly, I have no clue where a lot of the themes and relationship ideas came from. I mean, I put a lot of my own thoughts and feelings about life into the story but I've thought from early on that I didn't actually write Hope Texas, God did. I know, it's sounds corny. God has better things to do than write a comic book. But I can't really explain how I wrote something as meaningful and subtle as Hope Texas is in just 4 months. All I'd written before were fart joke comic strips about my life and graphic design. Not exactly Pulitzer Price stuff there.

Anyway, to wrap this up, I'm going to finish the last half of Hope Texas book two the way I always was going to with a few changes down the road and just trust God to give me the words to say.

It's hard being a writer - or any type of creative - you never really know if what you're doing is good or bad. You just have to get the words out and then give the rest to God, I guess, and hope He gets the story to who needs it.

Welcome to Hope Texas is a heart warming story about two friends trying to fulfill a dying bucket list wish.
