This episode we will be talking about something that we ALL have been guilty of and if we aren’t actively fighting against it, we probably are actively taking part in it…. Confirmation bias.
-What is it?
-How can we fight it?
-How is it connected to our identity and worldivew?

We have all heard of the term “toxic relationship” or the popular question of “when do I cut off a toxic person/relationship?” These pop psychology phrases have morphed into the social phenomena of “cancel culture” and echo chambers of “self love”

But when Christians have fractured relationships with family or friends, or even members of Christ’s body of believers, how should we respond? Should we be asking the same questions that popular culture tells us to ask - evaluating what the other person brings to the relationship? Should we seek to rebuild relationships that have been poisoned by a past wrong, or even more popularly today, by identity politics? What does scripture say about relational restoration and its level of importance?

"This world is not. . .
a kingdom without a throne,
a throne without a sovereign,
or a sovereign without a scepter.

By no blind accident are the
affairs of this planet governed.

God is in the history of the world . . .
its past,
its present, and
its yet unshapen future.

The statesman and the politician may
not recognize this fact; but it is so.

God rules the kingdom of providence.

His hand is moving and controlling all events
and circumstances, national and social, public
and private; giving birth, and shape, and tint
to those phenomena in the history of nations,
and to those affairs in the history of individuals,
which to human perception are often enshrouded
in mystery so dreadful and profound.

Let this view of God's providential reign hush
all murmurings at our lot, making us content
with such things as we have, assured that He
will never leave us nor forsake us.

Let it bow our soul in meek submission to His
sovereign will, in view of those painful and
inexplicable events which sometimes cast the
darkest shade upon our sunniest landscape,
and dash from our lips their sweetest cup of joy.

Let it incite our gratitude for the blessings
loaned us so long, though now removed; and
for the blessings which still remain to soothe,
and gladden, and cheer us onward.

Let it strengthen our faith in the
Divine assurance that . . .
our daily bread shall be given us,
our path shielded amid encircling evil,
and our soul, guided by His counsel and
kept by His power, eventually and safely
conducted home to glory."

Join Women of the Table as they discuss the “hot topic” of Christian discipleship. What is discipleship? How should it be done? What are common hindrances and how can we answer those hindrances? And, can we solely do long distance discipleship? In this episode we also break down Susan Heck’s fabulous book on discipleship and respond to answers from our listeners regarding their own discipleship struggles.

Can Christians be funny? SHOULD they be funny? Can Christians have a God honoring sense of humor?!?

Despite popular belief, Christians don't have to abandon humor in order to pursue Christian virtue. On the contrary, Christians should be the most joy-filled, grateful, and fun-loving people. Betsy and Michelle discuss how we should employ the gift of laughter, humor, and joking. Are there humorous instances in scripture? Can we properly understand the seriousness of sin and still laugh at a good joke? Or...make a good joke?!

15/06/2020

Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory,
for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!

Why should the nations say,
“Where is their God?”
Our God is in the heavens;
he does all that he pleases.

Their idols are silver and gold,
the work of human hands.
They have mouths, but do not speak;
eyes, but do not see.
They have ears, but do not hear;
noses, but do not smell.
They have hands, but do not feel;
feet, but do not walk;
and they do not make a sound in their throat.
Those who make them become like them;
so do all who trust in them.

O Israel, trust in the LORD!
He is their help and their shield.
O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD!
He is their help and their shield.
You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD!
He is their help and their shield.

The LORD has remembered us; he will bless us;
he will bless the house of Israel;
he will bless the house of Aaron;
he will bless those who fear the LORD,
both the small and the great.

May the LORD give you increase,
you and your children!
May you be blessed by the LORD,
who made heaven and earth!

The heavens are the LORD’s heavens,
but the earth he has given to the children of man.
The dead do not praise the LORD,
nor do any who go down into silence.
But we will bless the LORD
from this time forth and forevermore.
Praise the LORD!

Why should Christians think about technology? Technology offers insight into what problems human's seek to solve, and how (rightly and wrongly) to solve them, reveal our worldview, and change the way we operate on a daily basis.

In this episode, Michelle and Betsy are reunited after months of quarantine, and discuss a new TV show that involves uploading consciousness, Amish decision making, and cutting off limbs.

It's a fun one! We laughed and we cried, quite literally.

Let us know your thoughts on technology! How do you determine what tech to use and what to reject? Do you think we will use and develop technology in Heaven? And the ultimate question of: if we can, should we?

New Episode!

In this episode I am joined by Dr. P. Andrew Sandlin, minister, cultural theologian, and author; the founder and president of the Center for Cultural Leadership; formerly Vice President of the Chalcedon Foundation; and more. We discussed how Gnosticism rears its ugly head in the Church (and broader culture) today and how it affects the way we live in the world. Dr. Sandlin gave insight into how Christians should view their vocations (career/craft) as it relates to the advancement of God’s Kingdom here on Earth, as well as whether or not we should expect our work to continue after Jesus returns, after he has placed all his enemies under his feet - the last enemy being death itself (Psalm 110:1). Should an entrepreneur plan for the growth of his business as though it will be obsolete when Jesus comes back? Or should he be planning the growth of his business farther than that? Listen in to find out.

We must not dismiss those who are trying to raise concerns about the ideological underpinnings of the secular social justice movement as ‘haters’ or ‘fundamentalists.’ In precisely the same way, we must not dismiss any discussion of racism, or sexism, or social justice as “cultural Marxism.” These are conversations that we need to have..."

"It was his Savior, Jesus Christ, that my dad always wanted most to talk about. Even in his final days, until he lacked the energy and breath to speak, he turned every conversation to Jesus and what the Lord had done. He perpetually marveled that God took a seventeen-year-old skeptic, defeated in hopelessness and unbelief, and called him into a life of glorious hope and belief in the truth of Scripture—a message he would carry across the globe for 48 years."

"Every time we read the promises of restoration in the prophets, do not think woodenly of a hyperliteral fulfillment of these texts in some future day in the land of Israel. Recognize what the New Testament everywhere proclaims—that the restoration promised in Jeremiah has already come upon us through Christ’s resurrection and outpouring of the Spirit (see Gal. 3:14; Heb. 11:10)."

https://tabletalkmagazine.com/posts/judgment-unto-restoration-jeremiah-christ-and-us-2020-05/

Because of our union with Christ by faith alone, the two-part judgment-unto-restoration story of the prophets is our story as well. We, too, suffered and died with Christ, and we, too, live with Him.

The best sermons are the sermons
which are most full of Christ.

A sermon without Christ....
it is an awful, a horrible thing;
it is an empty well;
it is a cloud without rain;
it is a tree twice dead, plucked by the roots.

It is an abominable thing to give men
stones for bread, and scorpions for eggs,
and yet they do so who preach not Jesus.

A sermon without Christ! As well talk of
a loaf of bread without any flour in it.
How can it feed the soul?

Men die and perish because Christ is not
there, and yet His glorious gospel is the
easiest thing to preach, and the sweetest
thing to preach; there is most variety in it,
there is more attractiveness in it than in
all the world besides"

17/05/2020

"The reality is that we do not come to God as innocent victims who deserve compassion and healing. Instead, we come to God as wicked rebels who deserve wrath. The cross was not an act of justice towards us, but an act of mercy towards us. Ironically, if we confuse the concepts of “justice” and “mercy”, we actually weaken our motivation as Christians to serve our neighbors."

"My serious concern not just for Wytsma but for the church at large is that what should be, at best, political unity is being mistaken for theological unity. Conservative evangelicals should not gloss over the serious theological differences we have with progressive Christians simply because they are “justice-minded.” When basic, essential doctrines become an obstacle to co-belligerency with progressives in the pursuit of “justice”, evangelicals are increasingly choosing to minimize, water-down, or discard their beliefs. That’s wrong and dangerous."

The Depressed Soul's Soliloquy

by William Nicholson, 1862

"Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God!" Psalm 43:5

When the Psalmist uttered this language, he personated God's people in every age. They have their seasons of depression as well as of elevation. "Sorrowful, yet rejoicing." The text is the language of Christian experience.

I. The Best of Men At Times Become The Subjects of Depression.

They experience,

1. Habitual depression. That which is constitutional, of a nervous temperament — timid, fearful, and often desponding.

2. Depression arising from inward conflicts — from the corruptions of the heart — from the suggestions of the Wicked One.

3. Depressions arising from a sense of imperfections — failure in secret duties — little progress in the Divine life. How unlike Christ!

4. Depression arising from domestic trials. The family is not what he could wish — few or none of its members devoted to God. Shall we all meet in Heaven?

5. Depression arising from personal and relative afflictions.

6. Depression arising from approximation to death.

7. Depression arising from the low state of Zion.

II. It Is The Duty of Good Men To Overcome Such Depression. "Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God!"

1. Not by artificial means, as opiates, alcoholic drinks, to drown the senses. Not by plunging into sensual indulgence and pleasures. Not by apathy or stoicism.

2. Overcome this depression by the exercise of your rational powers. "Why are you down cast?" Investigate the cause — these causes are connected with your fallen state — it will ever be so — others better than you have been so depressed. These trials are a necessary discipline to wean you from earth — and to cause you to aspire after Heaven. 1 Peter 1:6-7. When you arrive in Heaven, you will praise God for them.

Despondency cherished is injurious — it dishonors God — it paralyzes exertion — it renders the man a more easy prey to the enemy of souls.

3. Overcome by hope in God. He is the refuge of his people in distress. He delights to bless them. He loves them with an infinite love, and guards them with Almighty power. He is faithful. His covenant stands — it is everlasting. "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging!" Psalm 46:1-3

That your hope may produce fruition,

Go and spread your wants before God.
Plead with him through Christ to help and deliver you.
Have faith in God.
He will deliver you, and you shall praise him. Psalm 34:4-8; 50:15.
You shall see and feel the benefit of your trials.
Hope in God to the end.

"Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever!" Psalm 125:1

"You may have lost much that you once possessed. You may have failed to have all that you desired, or expected to have. But, child of God, think what it is to have the Kingdom of Heaven!
Who is rich — if you are not rich!
Who is happy — if you are not happy!
Who is honorable — if you are not glorious!
Fear not, child of God! Fear not poverty. Fear not trial. Fear nothing which makes you feel your dependence upon God.

Envy no man of his possessions, his honors, or his pleasures. You have far more than he has!
Earthly riches make to themselves wings and fly away — but your riches endure forever.
Earthly crowns are corruptible — but your crown is incorruptible.
Earthly pleasures are but for a moment — but yours are eternal pleasures at your Father's right hand. (Psalm 16:11.)

But, reader, the Scriptures tell us that we must go through much tribulation enter into the Kingdom of God." (Acts 14:22.) But your "light affliction, which is but for a moment, works for you a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory." (2 Corinthians 4:17.) Before long, through sustaining grace, you shall sit down with Christ on His throne." (Rev. 3:21.) Child of God, remember the promise; obey the precept; think of the heavenly Kingdom, and fear not!"

My needs — His fullness!

(James Meikle, May 24, 1757)

All plenitude is in Christ, to answer all the needs of His people. In Christ dwells all the fullness of the Godhead, that out of His fullness, I may receive all spiritual blessings!

Have I destroyed myself by sin?
I have deliverance from Him who is mighty to save from sin and wrath!

Is my life fleeting — and passing away like a shadow?
Jesus is the Ancient of days, and endures forevermore!

Are my days short-lived and full of trouble?
Jesus is my life, and the joy of my heart!

Am I exposed to contempt?
Jesus shall be my crown of glory, and diadem of beauty!

Am I traveling through the wilderness?
Jesus is my staff, and on Him I lean all the way!

Am I on my last journey to my long home?
Jesus is my leader, and my rewarder!

Am I a sheep?
Jesus is my pasture, and my green pasture too!

Am I hungry and thirsty?
Jesus is my heavenly manna, and gives me to drink of the water of life!

Am I weary?
Jesus is my rest and refreshing!

Am I weak?
Jesus is my strength!

Am I oppressed and wronged?
Jesus is my judge and my avenger!

Am I reproached?
Jesus will wipe away the reproach of His people!

Am I a soldier?
Jesus is my Captain and shield!

Must I fight in the field of battle?
Jesus is my armor in the day of war!

Do I sit in darkness?
Jesus is my light!

Do I have doubts?
Jesus is my counselor!

Am I ignorant?
Jesus is my wisdom!

Am I guilty?
Jesus is my justification!

Am I filthy?
Jesus is my sanctification!

Am I poor?
Jesus is the pearl of great price, and has immeasurable riches laid up for me!

Am I blind?
Jesus, and none but He can open the eyes of one born blind!

Am I naked?
Jesus has white clothing to cover the shame of my nakedness!

Am I in the very utmost necessity?
Jesus is a very present help in time of trouble!

Am I exposed to the hurricanes of adversity?
Jesus is . . .
a refuge from the storm,
a shelter from the blast,
rivers of water in a desert,
the shadow of a great rock in a weary land!

Am I afraid of being left alone?
Jesus will never leave me, nor forsake me!

Do friends and brethren prove false?
Jesus is the friend who sticks closer than a brother!

Am I in danger from disease and death — or from sin and Satan?
My life is hidden with Christ in God! When He shall appear, I shall appear with Him — immortal in my body, and glorious in my soul!

Is my case considered in the court of Heaven?
There Jesus is my Advocate!

Do I offend the Father?
Jesus is my Intercessor!

Do I suffer in my body, and am I grieved in my mind?
Jesus bore my infirmities, and carried my griefs!

Is my mind disquieted, and my soul debarred from peace?
Jesus is my sympathetic High Priest! He was tempted in all points, and knows how to support those who are tempted!

Am I poor in my circumstances?
Jesus, the heir of all things! Though He was rich, yet for my sake He became poor — that I through His poverty might be made rich!

Do I suffer in my character?
Jesus was numbered with transgressors, called a glutton, a drunkard, and a devil!

Am I bereaved or alone?
Jesus, my best friend, can never die!

Must I undergo death and be laid in the grave?
Jesus has taken away the sting of death, and robbed the grave of its victory!

Must I rot in the grave?
Jesus shall be my resurrection, and raise me to immortality and bliss!

Would I go to God and to glory?
Jesus is my way, and must admit me into the palace of the great King, where I shall abide forever!

My needs are many — but His fullness is infinitely more!

The morning dews and fructifying showers water the fields, and refresh the parched furrows. But what are they, compared to the exhaustless ocean of Jesus?

What is all that I enjoy here below, compared to the exuberant fullness of Heavenly bliss? O! then, how shall my soul be replenished — when possessed of this infinite All, through eternity itself!
