Your WVVC Space Weather Team is keeping you up to date...

Today is the day! The Solar Eclipse will get underway at about 2pm, with maximum achieved at about 3:15pm to 3:30pm, then the skies will return to normal. We are seeing the potential for some cloud cover, but we are hoping for some good, and safe viewing, with proper eye protection.

We have the latest information from The National Weather Service in Binghamton, NY to show what we are expecting to see.

KDFJ

[9:00 AM Monday] - Here's the latest visible satellite imagery zoomed into CNY/NEPA. High, thin and somewhat patchy clouds are over the region right now, but thicker clouds are moving in from Western NY. We're still hoping for some thinning of that cloud layer as it arrives over the next few hours. Stay tuned.

Your WVVC Space Weather Team is keeping you up to date...

We have received some updated information from The National Weather Service in Binghamton, NY, on the cloud cover potential for the Solar Eclipse tomorrow.

KDFJ

Here's our latest thinking on the percentage of opaque cloud cover at the start of tomorrow's eclipse. We expect there to be varying amounts of thick and thin high cloud cover in the area. The poorest viewing conditions appear to lean more toward Western NY but also over parts of the total eclipse track that runs through CNY. The big question remains as to how many breaks there may be in the cloud layers, where they will exactly be, and how thick/thin clouds may be. A "perfect" viewing day does seem unlikely at this point.

Your WVVC Space Weather Team is keeping you up to date...

As we are receiving updated information on the cloud cover potential for Monday, The National Weather Service in Binghamton, NY has shared their latest predictions for the Solar Eclipse, which will be occurring between 2pm and 4pm, on April 8th.

KDFJ

[5 PM Saturday 4/6/2024]: Here's the latest regional Sky Cover forecast for the period of the eclipse on Monday April 8th. A weak upper level impulse will be pushing into the upper ridge over central NY, which will bring some increasing mid-level clouds into parts of Western NY during the afternoon. It's not game-over, but it's going to be close. The most favorable conditions continue to look like they'll be over the North Country and northern New England. Your WVVC Space Weather Team is keeping you up to date...

Since we have a few days of nasty weather this week, it might be fun to do some cool science preparation with your kids as we prepare for the Solar Eclipse happening on Monday, April 8th, 2024.

Safety is most important when viewing the Solar Eclipse, and if you don't have the proper filter glasses, you can make a fun project by making a pinhole viewer that is easy to build, with household items. Of course, adult supervision is a must, when cutting and putting the pinhole in the aluminum foil. And be sure to tape up everything, to ensure there are no light leaks.

The following video from our little friend, Parker, at NASA, will show how easy it is, to make a safe and fun viewer, and you will be all set for some great photos, on Monday, as you can place the lense of your camera on your phone over the opening, and the pinhole lense on the other side will do all of the magic for you, while letting you have a safe view of this heavenly event.

KDFJ

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross a significant portion of the United States. Here’s how to view the eclipse safely and what to do if you’re concerned about eye injury.

Your WVVC Weather Team is keeping you up to date...

We have a complex storm system moving towards us, and it will last for a few days. The National Weather Service in Binghamton, NY has provided us with details, while The National Weather Service in Albany, NY has shared a photo with us.

KDFJ

1. Winter storm watch still in effect for northern Onedia, Otsego and Delaware counties, mainly for the highest elevations where snow and sleet totals could reach 7 inches (50%). This will be a heavy/wet snowfall that will difficult to remove. A few inches may accumulate elsewhere with little to snow accumulation in valley locations. Some locations could see several hours of sleet as well. The main timeframe for snow and sleet is Wednesday afternoon into Thursday.

2. The total amount of precipitation forecasted has increased with liquid amounts of 2-3 inches. The first round will be today with around an inch by tonight. An additional round of 1-2 inches Wednesday may lead to some minor small stream and poor drainage flooding. Minor river flooding is possible by Thursday, it is too early to pinpoint which basins have the highest chances of river flooding.

3. Easterly wind gusts Wednesday in the 35-50 mph range are possible. This may result in downed trees and wires.

4. Sky cover Monday afternoon for the eclipse looks to be around 40%, mainly in the form of high clouds. Sky cover looks lower to our northeast and higher to our south and west. The chance of any rainfall is under 10%.

Today will be the last nice day for quite some time as we are expecting a stormy week ahead.

Expect dropping temperatures through the week, with rain, wind and even some snow possible mid to late week. At this time, the best chance for accumulating snowfall will be in the higher elevations, especially across the Catskills.

Stay tuned to forecast updates through the week. The following 7 day forecast is for Binghamton. For your local forecast go to weather.gov/bgm.

The rain will be moderate to locally heavy through the day, especially across Pike & Sullivan counties. All precipitation will taper off from west to east later in the day, or by early evening for the Castkills. Please comment or send in any snow, ice or rain reports; this will be greatly appreciated!

3:10 AM Saturday Update: Good early morning all! Above freezing air aloft is surging north into portions of Central NY, as predicted with this system. Heavy snow will continue across Oneida County, including the Mohawk Valley through the morning and early afternoon hours, where a Winter Storm Warning is in effect. Locations that were seeing snow have changed to rain, freezing rain & sleet. Using Dual Pol KBGM CC radar product we can see where this mixing is occuring. It lines up very close to the 850mb (or about 5000 feet above the ground) 0C isotherm. What precipitation type are you seeing, and how much snow or ice have do you have?
