Young Jazz Composers Concert
Young Jazz Composers Concert
May 15th at 4:00 PM PST
A quintet of PJCE musicians perform music by the 2023 cohort of Young Jazz Composers! Join us at The 1905 to hear original music by high school and college-age composers written with the guidance of professional composers and performers.
The Young Jazz Composers program is a mentorship and performance opportunity for students to learn the ins and outs of composing for a professional jazz ensemble. Through one-on-one private lessons and professional group feedback, students will gain valuable insight into the idiosyncrasies of composing. By the end of the program, students will be able to understand the basic skills needed to compose a tune, use digital notation software, and correctly notate parts for rhythm section and horns.
The 2023 YJC band features Mary-Sue Tobin on saxophone, Pablo Rivarola on trumpet, Todd Marston on piano, Ben Medler on bass, and Tyson Stubelek on drums.

Composers Cookoff | A fundraiser for PJCE
Join us for PJCE’s annual fundraiser in the style of “Iron Chef!”
April 23rd at 4:00 PM PST.
Three composers, Gordon Lee, Christopher Brown, and Caroline Miller, will head off in a friendly competition—who can create the most delicious, the most delightful, the most delectable new composition using the secret ingredient, Tommy Wolf’s tune “Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most.” We chose this year’s ingredient to get us in the mood for spring time in Portland and to challenge our composers to add a new twist on an old standard. Local jazz mainstays Kerry Politzer, Aaron Barnes, and Jimmy Herrod will provide colorful critiques and be the ultimate judges of who cook’s up the tastiest tune! Hosted by revered jazz artist and Oregon Hall of Fame Inductee, Marilyn Keller, prepare for a night full of new sights and sounds!
Christopher Brown is an acclaimed musician, composer, bandleader, and educator who seeks to be a voice within the advocacy of Jazz music and American culture. And through the expansive range of groups that he has assembled and/or performed with—which span from duos to Jazz big bands to military marching bands and orchestras—his musical and personal experiences have led him towards an interest in synthesizing the principles of Jazz with the day-to-day practicalities of life. However, given that businesses shape the global market economy that everyone lives and participates in, is why he has found it useful to integrate business philosophies with that of music to help develop himself and his band. Which as he likes to say, “we’re all in the same business…the people-trusting-people business. No people, no business.”
Gordon Lee is a composer, jazz pianist, arranger, conductor and music educator who is well known throughout the Pacific northwest and has worked with Don Cherry, Obo Addy, Joe Lovano, Bobby Hutcherson and Benny Golson among many others. Lee played with one of the originators of jazz-rock fusion, Jim Pepper, for
