Department of Tourism alongside Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency & the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, have launched and deployed the first batch of Tourism Monitors to patrol around the Paul Kruger Gate and other attraction areas near Hazyview, as part of the Tourism Safety Programme to enhance tourism safety ahead of peak summer holiday period.

About 200 tourism monitors in total will be deployed across the area according to Deputy Minister of Tourism, Fish Mahlalela but for now only 100 will start taking position as soon as possible.

Department of Tourism has signed a MoU with Airbnb and collaborations include amongst others, the establishment of a national registration system for Short Term Rentals as per section 6 of the Tourism Act 2014 in South Africa to provide transparency into the short-term rental market.

The MoU further includes collaboration between the two parties on the Airbnb Entrepreneurship Academy, a skills development programme focused on spreading the benefits of tourism to historically disadvantaged individuals by lowering barriers to entry and providing economic empowerment. Tourism Business Council of South Africa has officially launched the Secura Traveller app as part of improving visitors' experience.

The app is aimed to connect travellers and tourism stakeholders to hundreds of service providers when every second counts; such service providers will be available and are ready, equipped to assist in any situation.

This Traveller app also integrates a range of affordable services including emergency medical responses, breakdowns and crime-related incident assistance.

South Africa is gearing up more measures to strengthen the safety of tourists and further increase visit numbers.

1. R174million had been allocated to train more than 2 200 Tourism Monitors across the country for the 2023/24 financial year, with the aim to improve the visitor experience across provinces at top tourist attractions and national parks towards the end of October to early November 2023, just in time for the summer tourist season.

2. The Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA), is currently in talks with Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) on the C-More tracking device and how best this technology can be incorporated into the Secura app.

Leader of Government Business and MEC for EDTEA KZN, Siboniso Duma visited the Drakensberg Cable Car project and got to experience where the base and mid-way stations of the much anticipated cableway would be.

The MEC also immersed on the snow-capped top, with awe-striking 360° views of the Drakensburg Mountains, in the experience which tourists will have when the project is completed and operational.

The MEC went for an oversight visit to the Mazizini area on Friday where he assessed and monitored progress made on the proposed location for the cableway, which will boost tourism economy and also take mutual advantage of tourism in bordering Lesotho and the Free State.
