The reason why I suddenly panic when someone asks me to go for a walk, a hike or even shopping with them….

It’s Dysautonomia Awareness Month and I was hesitant to speak on this in our community but then I remembered how amazing you all are!

I have Dysautonomia. This is an umbrella term for a myriad of symptoms that occur when you have a dysfunctional autonomic nervous system. (My wires are crossed). I also have an autoimmune disease which is more than likely the culprit to my dysfunction. I won’t even get into my joint issues 😉

I have tachycardia and an exaggerated heart rate so a simple walk for me can feel like a marathon followed by a dangerous drop in blood pressure. I will pass out if I don’t get on the ground immediately. (This has happened more times than I’d like to remember) it happens mostly when I’m upright for too long. But on special occasions I just wake up this way 🙄. Oh, and if it’s sunny or hot outside forget it 🥵 because I also can’t regulate my body temperature.

It can be unpredictable and sudden or I can be symptomatic for days.

When I have an episode, it completely wipes me out and usually takes several days to recover and regulate. If I have a day of activity it almost always needs to be followed by a day of rest.

I know I appear “normal” and healthy on the outside, unless you’ve seen our videos where I’m laid out on a trail 🫣, which makes it all the more difficult to explain my “why nots” and “ why I can’t”.

So, if you meet me out on the road and want to share an adventure together maybe you’ll understand my situation a bit better. Maybe you’ll meet someone else who has this problem and better understand them and maybe instead of a hike we can go kayaking, on an e-bike ride or swim!
