My First Dark Lord Day 3 Floyds Brewing

If you’re a craft beer fan in the Midwest (or even outside of that), you’ve likely heard of, if not had a beer from, 3 Floyds Brewing. They are the largest brewery in the state of Indiana, and have been in the game for over 25 years. In that time, they’ve cemented themselves in the industry with hits like Alpha King, Gumball Head, Zombie Dust, & of course, their “demonic” Russian Imperial Stout; Dark Lord. And if you want some of that highly coveted alcohol infused motor oil known as Dark Lord for yourself, it’s only released one day a year, at the brewery, on the aptly named Dark Lord Day.
I’d heard many stories from plenty of people about this release, and finally got the chance to attend myself to see what it was all about. This is an outdoor event in northern Indiana, so weather could be a wide spectrum, but this year at least, was bright, sunny, & warm. There is a large pavilion with tables underneath centrally located for the event, but if you are wanting to secure a seat in the shade, you may want to arrive earlier than later as this filled up fairly quickly. Surrounding this are ample food trucks to keep you going through the day, as well as beer tents pouring selections of 3 Floyds’ brews plus a dedicated guest tap tent. Lastly, there is a stage at one end for a lineup of metal bands which start rocking in the afternoon.
Now I’ve been to my share of beerfests & the like, but this is an entirely different beast altogether. Yes, it is the release of a highly sought after beer, but that is really only a small part of attending this event. Rather than a traditional beer festival where you jump from line to line choosing a sample from what each brewery brought, this is a straight up beer share on a gigantic scale. Apparently, this all evolved from the early days when Dark Lord was just a beer release date where people would bring beer to share with others while waiting in line. 3 Floyds really leaned into that aspect, growing the day into the full blown spectacle it is today. Most everyone in attendance brings up to 72oz of their discretion to share. Some bring heavy hitting rare boozy variants from top-tier breweries to compete for “who brought the best”, others bring faves from their local area to spread the word of small or up & comers, while the strategists brought light refreshing crushers to cleans the palette between big stouts & beat the heat. All were more than happy to trade pours & discuss the beers being enjoyed as well as anything in the sphere of the beer world.
Attendees came from far and wide to partake in the festivities. Between people we shared beer with or stood in line next to for the “wheel of death” (think the Wheel of Fortune, but for 3 Floyds’ swag), we got to chat with some pretty awesome people. Promptly after picking up my Dark Lord assortment, someone approached me about trading for the last variant of this year’s release that he had yet to acquire, and was over the moon when I accepted his offer, gushing about the kinsmanship in craft beer. We crossed paths with brewers from Tennessee on their inaugural visit, got to inquire about the beer scene across the pond with visitors from a brewery in England, as well as ran into a few of the TBGU (shout out to Kelly, Dr Drew, Rob, and our gracious host; Smo-Money & fam).
And therein lies the magic of Dark Lord Day; the camaraderie. Everyone was hanging out, happily sharing what they brought with whoever wanted some, having a great time, and parting ways with a “Happy Dark Lord Day!” This really is a unique event, and I completely understand the appeal now that I’ve been. Dark Lord Day truly is a must go at least once for any beer nerd that can swing the trip.
Ohh yea, and if you need a break from all the beer, there’s also a metal concert you can enjoy too.

"While visiting some friends in Cincinnati over the weekend, I got to hit up Hi-Wire Brewing in the new Factory 52 Development in Norwood. This area used to be a vacant playing card factory, but has now been renovated into apartments & an awesome hangout spot that includes shopping, a food hall, dog park, & 2 breweries. Focusing on Hi-wire though; they have a nice chill vibe, great patios, 24 taps, liquor (including Malort if you want to punish yourself), and are family & pet friendly. I tried their 10w-40 stout Vietnamese coffee variant, and was quite pleased. Also appreciated that Skyline was winning the tip war over Gold Star! Definitely a fun stop in a cool development worth exploring. "

So Two Beerded Guys was started by Jon Couch and Tyler Danner as a way to get together every week to drink and talk beers. After our first pseudo episode we realized two things, we wanted our friend off screen Matt to be at every episode and we wanted to start having guests.
