Did you know for every 10 litres of sea water you can extract 180grams of sea salt.
Next time you're near a clean ocean grab some water and reduce it until you are left with salt 👌
Make sure your boil up pot is clean. Chuck in the water and leave it on high. Once the water is almost evaporated turn the element down to low and stir the salt until it is evenly dry

Beauty day on the Whanganui coast today with the oldman and the bro Don. Smallest Snapper went 34cm biggest went 64.
Good change from foxton beach. Surprisingly only 1 shark caught today which was a grey shark/tope/school shark.
Nga mihi Tangaroa for these gifts to feed our whanau

Turkey Tail Mushrooms

There are many traditional uses for Turkey Tail. These include helping clear toxins, increasing energy, removing fluid build-up, strengthening the immune system, and supporting the function of the liver, lung and spleen function. Some conditions that benefit from turkey tail use include coughs, breathing difficulties, hemorrhoids and joint pain.

In more recent times, turkey tail has been used extensively to support the immune system – especially in those with weakened immunity
People use turkey tail mushroom to improve response to cancer medicines and radiation. It is also used for muscle strength, fatigue, UTIs, and many other conditions. Their immune boosting properties help the body fight off infections like bacteria or viruses.

Quick edit from a spinning session this week for kahawai. Few for the smoker. They seem to be in great condition atm. Fattening up for winter.
The Manawatu rivermouth is where it all started for me and my love for catching kahawai. I remember coming to this exact same spot in the early 90s watch my father and uncle catch kahawai. The rivermouth was packed every weekend of fisherman trying to catch a kai. The nickname "the people's fish" is very fitting. Brings the people together and feeds alot of people
Nga mihi Tangaroa for blessing me and my whanau with these gifts

Beautiful morning out fishing. Stoked to get a decent Snapper on the rod after many Kahawai.
Catching fish from a kayak is very rewarding after putting in the mahi covering ground. Plus all of the preparation leading up. I enjoy it alot more than boat fishing
Fresh kahawai belly used to catch the big snapper. Squid for the kahawai and homemade salted Kahawai on the long line

Hazy Wairarapa mish with the brother Don. Gathering Paua, Kina and Crayfish. As you will see the diving was in the shallows due to big waves out deep. No equalizing all day which was good. 7 hours traveling, 1 hour. Definitely put in the work.
It was also good to see fishery officer's out there patrolling the area.
Nga mihi Tangaroa

Did you know that Bluff Oysters are native to New Zealand and can be found throughout the country but is most common in the south.

It's not always about what you catch, you should be learning every time you jump in to the ocean.
I reckon some of the best wananga/lessons are the drives on the way to the dive pozzy. This is when alot of stories and knowledge is shared between dive buddies.
Take time to take it all in, the moment you slow down and observe in the water, the more you will see. Plus the fish/crayfish won't be as scared 👆🏼🌊👌🏼

I often get asked the same questions. Where exactly are you diving? Where are the crays? Where are the oysters? Where's the paua spots? Where's the snapper spot x And so on...

Doing research on Google earth and looking for structure is all apart of diving and fishing. Get out there and explore. That for me is the fun part. Covering lots of ground and thinking like the species I am after. Think like a crayfish and you will find crayfish. Think like a fish and you will find fish. Think like an oyster and you will find oysters. It's actually pretty simple once you get the hang of it. I don't use fancy fish finders. I just follow my gut instincts and knowledge gained over the years and give it a go, whether that's foraging in the bush or diving and fishing.
Take note what the environment looks like when you see certain species and keep it in mind for other areas. Or lock it in and remember it for the future.

Get in the zone, Explore and have some fun!!

Trout fishing, tubing down rapids and some beautiful kai shared with loved ones.
Sadly I couldn't hear the gopro beep to tell me I'm recording so I missed abit of action. If anyone is keen to give Trout fishing a go and need advice just send me a message or comment on the post. Happy to share any knowledge whether it's to do with fishing, diving or cooking.
Appreciate everyone that continues to watch and follow my journey. You are all legends!!

Throw back to my first deer i shot with my brother. Failed on the first day but managed some meat for the whanau on the second morning. I spooked a spiker with my shot and my brother grabbed the gun and nailed it. Both shots were around 420m
Few hours bush hacking to get all of the meat out. What an experience that was!!

People often ask why I give mihi to Tangaroa all the time. It's not always because of the gifts (his children) I have received to sustain my whanau. It is the continuous support and guidance he shows me. From my mahi Whakairo/traditional maori wood carving to my adventures on the water. He saved my life!!! He helped pull my head in when needed with m**h addiction. When I feel lost or disconnected,I'm straight to the beach to do a karakia and have a korero with him.
So if you ever see me staring into space whilst on/near the water, this is what's happening. I'm simply acknowledging him and taking that time to connect.

In return I have the upmost respect for Tangaroa and his domain.

Nga mihi for keeping my body healthy and my mind sharp

Oyster dive for Christmas with the bro Dom, and a safe successful day on the water on the Manawatu coast with Thompson. I managed one decent gurnard in between the kingy action but the camera was in arms reach😅 lost a snapper before it so I thought bu**er the gopro I'm not loosing this fish lol
1 kingfish and 1 gurnard for the day.
Also a quick easy way on filleting a kingfish

Massive Massive shout out to the brother Stef the Maori for the summer hook ups.
Ain't gon lie, iv had heaps of messages about all three seasonings/rubs. They have exceeded well above my expectations. From bbqs, smoked fish, roasts, stuffing ,meat patties and alot more.
The knives are insanely good for kai prep too!!
The cleaver being my favorite. As it's strong enough to slide through kingy and snapper rib bones. The oyster shucker is great especially for those stubborn ones. The filleting knife is flimsy and perfect for your summer table fish etc.

Jump on over to Stef the Maori website to order any products including some skux clothing 👆🏽🌊🎣🐟🍝🍲🦞
