Congratulations Rozie!

Congratulations to the winner of this year's NorthBound Book Award, Rozie Kelly! 🎉

Rozie wins publication with Saraband Books for her novel Kingfisher, described by judge Sara Hunt as "original, startling, beautifully written and often darkly funny". Look out for the book's publication in 2025!

She also receives a £5000 advance on royalties and access to the network of career support opportunities.

A huge thank you to Saraband Books and University of York for making this award possible 🙏

Congratulations Sue Lawrence on the publication of Lady’s Rock 🎉 It’s the third of Sue’s ‘Scotland’s Leading Ladies - seen and now heard’ titles, which show how women had no rights at all prior to the 20th century, even if they were apparently wealthy and privileged.

In this novel, though, the protagonist, Catherine, fights back. It’s been described as ‘a medieval Gone Girl’.

Last week Donald S Murray was due to launch The Salt and the Flame at but the weather gods intervened and he couldn’t travel from his blizzard-bound island home to the mainland.

We hope this can be rearranged sometime soon. Meanwhile, the novel has been picking up accolades from critics. The Times historical fiction reviewer Antonia Senior named it Book of the Month. The Scotsman’s Allan Massie said that it’s Murray’s best novel yet.

If you were moved by the prize-winning As the Women Lay Dreaming, this one’s for you. It follows the fate of young Hebrideans who left the Isle of Lewis just a few years after the Iolaire disaster to try their luck in Canada and the US. The themes of love and longing, hope and resilience are universal. This is a story of migrants who followed their dreams but still felt the pull of home and the need to stay connected to family and culture left behind.

If you’re in Glasgow, visit Waterstones in Sauchiehall Street where you will see this display.

This is the cover of the Observer magazine (the Sunday version of The Guardian, for folk outside the uk) for Jan 14: it’s the annual feature on new novelists to watch. Over the years they’ve picked global phenomena like Sally Rooney and Caleb Azuma Nelson, and Booker winners including Douglas Stuart for this highly exclusive feature. This year, standing on the left in the cover shot: Andrés N. Ordorica, whose debut novel we’re publishing in July.

How We Named the Stars is a beautiful and devastating love and grieving story with a coming-of-age q***r protagonist you’ll root for from page 1. It’s an unforgettable and timeless story.
Proofs will be available soon!
