Summer is out in full force now so it is time for fly masks, spray and sweat soaked tee shirts from mucking stalls.

It is so easy to let your heart strings be pulled by these horses, but it is also important to remember that leaving horses on the range is not biologically sound for the ecosystem, nor is it in the best interest of their wellbeing!

While Colorado's Governor Jared Polis is calling for BLM to "delay" the gather that is planned this September because he doesn't think it is humane...

This is reality for many "wild" horses that are on the Piceance East Douglas HMA due to excessive numbers of horses on the land and nothing left to eat. And VERY little growing back this spring.

Governor, do you call this "humane" treatment to leave them here to starve to death? If you care anything about the horses or the land, you would encourage the removal of the excess horses immediately!

Note the deteriorated condition of this mare between 4/20/22 - 5/12/22. She had a foal between these dates so when she dies a painful drawn out death, the foal will die of a similar process.

Note some of the horses are still in fair to good condition. However, they are declining quickly because there is no feed in the HMA. Expect more horses looking like these in the coming days....

My apologies for not getting another episode out yet. We have been overly busy with the kids' summer break starting. I promise to have another episode up in the next couple of weeks.

One plus to Summer Break is getting to spend plenty of time with the horses. My daughter has has been really excited to do lots of riding this year. We are starting off slow in the corral, working on nailing down handling technique and our Salt Wells Creek Wyoming mare "Luna" is patiently taking it all in stride.

If you have any doubts as to what these horses are capable of, the sky is the limit. This is my 8 year old daughter on one of our recently acquired Mustangs. This is Luna, a six year old mare from Salt Wells Creek Wyoming. She was trained by and is very much a horse that takes everything in stride. Don't underestimate the trainability of these horses.

For this episode, we are sitting down to talk with Melissa Coolich. Melissa was featured in the 2011 Mustang Heritage Foundation documentary " Wild Horse, Wild Ride" where she trained and competed in the Extreme Mustang Makeover, then bought and took home her competition Mustang "Zero" (her first Mustang). We will talk about the challenges that she faced, what drew her to getting a Mustang and some specifics about Zero and what she has done since the challenge.
