We spend hours, days, weeks, months and years nit picking ourselves in front of the mirror. But once you begin to look within yourself everything changes. It’s time to make peace with ourselves ❤️

Repeat after me: Gaining weight does not mean you have failed or let yourself go. You are not a better person for losing weight or a worse person for gaining weight. Weight fluctuation is normal, and for a lot of us that have dropped out of diet culture, gaining weight can be a victory- a sign that we are living our lives ☀️

Research suggests that negative body image and dissatisfaction with one's appearance can be passed down from mothers to their children. Studies have found that mothers who express dissatisfaction with their own bodies or who engage in disordered eating behaviors are more likely to have children who also struggle with body image issues.

Additionally, mothers who focus on physical appearance and weight may inadvertently convey the message to their children that these are the most important aspects of themselves.

Let’s break the cycle ❤️

Reading the comments from people who have bought the Diet Culture Dropout journal warm my heart so much. This comment particularly because I DID pour my everything in to this.

Bring able to drop out of diet culture and finally live a life of freedom around food and my body is something I never expected to experience. Since the moment we are born we are constantly being told our bodies are wrong & the way we are eating is wrong. It’s a prison which we conform to & just ‘accept’ the rigid lifestyle without questioning it, because everyone around us is doing the same thing.

Setting myself free & helping others set themselves free is my life calling, and I will stand by all of you who want to join me in this journey. Those who want to stop living by society’s unrealistic expectations & start living and appreciating life, as it is, in this moment.

Dropping out of diet culture is the best thing I ever did for myself, and for my kids.

Thank you for being on this journey with me ❤️✊🏻

The culture is so ingrained in us that it gets passed down from generation to generation creating the intergenerational diet cycle most of us are stuck in.

We have the research and knowledge to take back that power and break this dynamic within our own families.

Are you with me? 👊🏼

Living in a society that judges and discriminates bodies from a very young age is hard.

If you want to raise body neutral kids who grow up knowing that there is more to them than their physical appearance there are certain practices you can implement in your own home.

1. Speak positively about your own body in front of your children. Remember they are always listening and watching and will internalise the way their parents talk about themselves.

2. Leave diet talk at the door. Your children do not need to hear about Aunt Carol’s new diet.

3. Expose your children to body diversity through books/tv/media. The greater the representation the more likely they are to feel confident in their own bodies.

4. Avoid giving food moral value (labelling foods good/bad).

5. Teach them to focus on what their bodies can do instead of their physical appearance.

6. Get the whole family on board. It’s important that all care givers are on the same page when it comes to raising body neutral kids.

7. Spend time de-conditioning your own diet culture upbringing.

The best thing we can do for our children is heal ourselves 🤍

In order to stop the cycle we have to let go of our own fears & worries.

We need to stop micromanaging our children’s eating habits.

We need to stop looking at their bodies through diet culture tinted glasses.

We need to let go of our own internalised fat phobia.

We need to understand that interfering will do much more harm than letting them be.

They deserve better from us ❤️

We are a generation parented with diet culture principals, our parents were a product of their environment and a society where diet culture was the be all of “health”.

Let’s be honest, when our parents were parenting they did not have the type of information that is thankfully now available to us, that shows us the facts and the science behind how and why diet culture is so harmful.

Instead of pointing fingers at our parents it is important to look at the mistakes that were made with compassion and understanding that they were only doing their best with the knowledge they had.

Education is key! 🔑

Doing some work alongside your parents is important too, everyday I share with my mum any new findings, information & my memories of diet culture as a kid.

My mum is now learning alongside me how diet culture practices and beliefs infiltrated our everyday lives and caused harm- particularly to me as a child. She is now able to parent my children alongside me, with the information she lacked when she was parenting me all those years ago 🤍

This is the 1965 Slumber Party Barbie. Yes what you’re seeing is a Barbie marketed to children with a diet book which literally says “How to Loose Weight.. Don’t Eat” & a set of scales permanently set to 110lbs.

I know… I can’t believe this is real either.

Now I know this particular barbie came out almost 60 years ago but this is the perfect example of how society’s diet culture is out to get all of us, including children.

Studies show that young girls who play with barbie and dolls reported lower body esteem and an increased desire to be thin😢

We NEED to stop promoting dangerous behaviours like dieting to children and we NEED body diversity in children’s toys.

5 WAYS IN WHICH YOU MAY BE UNINTENTIONALLY TEACHING YOUR CHILDREN DISORDERED EATING:

1. Telling children when and what to eat: Having rules around eating such as not allowing children to eat outside of meal times can be damaging to children’s natural cues for hunger. It is important to let children feel hungry & full on their own.

2. Warning children about weight gain: Weight gain is completely normal specially as children hit puberty. Trying to control this can be harmful in the long run.

3. Complaining about excessive food: Taking food off the table to try warn your child not to “overeat” or hiding food from them can lead to children developing feelings of guilt around food.

4. Labelling foods as good or bad: This practice can create a judgement of foods in your child’s head, causing them to crave even further the “forbidden bad foods”.

5. Diet talk: If you or a family member are on a diet, keeping comments & habits surrounding your diet to yourself is the best course of action. Children are always watching & will spot how you talk to yourself surrounding your body image & food you eat and will eventually adapt to that lifestyle which will put them at higher risk of developing eating disorders and having bad body image.

The truth is no matter what we say at home children are still going to be exposed to diet culture and unrealistic beauty ideals from a very young age. Whether it’s through the Disney movies they watch with a lack of body diversity, adverts on tv/billboards/magazines and even chat in the school playground.

We can’t control everything our children hear and learn, but we can model the behaviours that we wish our children to adapt.

HOW CAN WE DO THAT?

- Speaking kindly or neutrally about our own bodies

- Speaking neutrally about food

- Teaching them about the uniqueness of each person and how not one of us is the same as the other

- Introducing movement as a way to feel good & enjoyment

- Ditch the diet & unrealistic body expectations yourself so you can best model it for them

If your parents had strong feelings about their bodies & dieting when you were growing up, chances are that you would have been similarly socialised, thus perpetuating the cycle of body dissatisfaction and the need to diet. We owe it to our children to change that.
