It's back! Of the 1129 birds I've seen, this is the third rarest. The elusive Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo. Yesterday morning a guide at San Luis Canopy Tour spotted this adult with a baby in tow. Managed to photograph the adult and make a recording of both of them. There are less than 50 published recordings if this species!

When a beautiful landscape presents itself remember that the best camera is the one you have on hand even if it's an inexpensive phone camera. We don't often get early morning fog here but when we do it makes for some beautiful scenes.

Often branches get in the way of a good shot, but sometimes they create some nice natural framing. This is one of the most common doves in Costa Rica.

This is a male of the aptly named Black-bellied Hummingbird. They are normally quite skittish and hard to photograph, but this guy stayed perched for a bit and let me capture him. He wasn't in the best spot and I had to get creative to get the right angle, but I was happy to have a nice picture of the male of this species to go with some pictures of the female that I already had.

There are two populations of the endangered, endemic Central American Squirrel Monkey population in Costa Rica. One is in the Osa Peninsula and the other is around Manuel Antonio National Park. These little monkeys are the smallest (and cutest IMO) monkeys in Costa Rica.

There was a drop in reports of this species in the early part of 2023 for some reason but the numbers seem to be back to normal now per reports on eBird.
