At least 8 journalists were detained by the National Security Service (NSS) on Tuesday afternoon.

The journalists, as well as a prominent activist, had turned up for a press conference called upon by lawmakers comprising mostly of SPLM-IO members.

The journalists were then released after four hours of detention!

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit has told the visiting United Nations Security Council delegation that he has requested his first deputy Riek Machar to submit a list of senior opposition commanders that are to be appointed into army command but has not yet submitted one.

Kiir also promised the visiting delegation that elections slated for end of transitional period will be conducted on time in 2023.

UN Security Council delegation in Juba

A delegation from the United Nations Security Council has this afternoon arrived in South Sudan's capital Juba to access, according to South Sudan presidency, impacts of sanctions and arms embargo on the country.

The delegation is led by the Permanent Representative of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the UN, Amb. Daung Dinh Quy and include top United Nations officials dispatched by world body.

According to the presidency statement, the delegation is in Juba "seek information on the impacts of sanctions on the development and on the activities of the government of South Sudan and the way forward."

Kiir forms legislative assemblies of 4 states

President Salva Kiir on Wednesday night issued a Republic Decree forming legislative assemblies of four states.

They include Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Warrap, Jonglei, and Eastern Equatoria states.

This brings the number of states with fully functioning legislatures to eight (8).

The President last week issued a decree reconstituting state legislative assemblies for Lakes, Western Equatoria, Upper Nile and Central Equatoria states.

He hasn't yet reconstituted legislatures for Unity and Western Bahr el Ghazal states.

Juba Mayor is sacked!

Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony of Central Equatoria state has issued a decree sacking the Mayor of Juba City Kalisto Lado who has been criticized by the public for allegedly disturbing street vendors.

In the decree seen by Juba Observer, the governor did not give reasons as to why he had to take that decision, nor did he name a replacement.
