We Shouldn't Be Doing This
"We shouldn't be doing this", she whispered but her eyes betrayed her
excitement.
We were alone in her room at her father's mansion.
The walls of the room were lined with bookshelves, filled with leather-bound
tomes that seemed to watch us like a silent sentinel.
With our books in front of us on her reading table.
We could hear the grandfather clock in the hallway, ticking away the seconds as we huddled closer together.
Aaa, some minutes ago, we were sitting opposite each other, preparing for our up coming exams.
But our eyes had met across the table, and a spark ignited between us.
We unconsciously moved from our positions into each other's arms.
Time seemed to slow down, and the rest of the world faded away as w lost ourselves es in the moment.
The sound of the yelling and pounding footsteps on the stairs interrupted our reverie and we sprang apart.
Suddenly, the door of the room bust open, and a furious figure stood in the doorway, his face red with anger. His phone in his hands, the video of our horrible* deeds playing.
It was her father, his eyes blazing as he glared at us. " What's the meaning
of this"
We stood face down, our arms at our backs.
"I demand an explanation!" he demanded, his voice shaking with fury. "Speak
up, or you'll both be in even more trouble"
He has always suspected us. Tried keeping us apart a thousand and one times
but we always find our way back to each other.
You have disobeyed my every command, flouted my rules, and now you're caught red-handed, he said, his voice filled with disappointment and betrayal. "How could you do this to me?
Tears down his cheeks, he shook his head in disbelief. "I thought I could trust you both, but now I see that was a mistake. I have given you every advantage in life, and this is how you repay me?".
Lifting his hands, he pointed his mobile at us, "You are both banished from this house, and you will never set foot in here again!".
She whispered, "We shouldn't have done that" with a tone only audible to my ears, as we walked away.
Getting close to the door, he calls her back. With tears falling from my eye,
I remembered I was the adopted child.
"You may go", he said to me, his voice cold and hard, "but you" he turn to his daughter, " you are to remain here. We have much to discuss". He slammed the door in my face, and I was left standing alone in the hallway.
As I walked away from the house, I felt a sense of freedom and possibility, mixed with sorrow and loss. I was starting a new chapter in my life, but at what cost?
I only hoped someday, the pain would fade and the memories would bring a smile to my face.
"Sometimes, the things we shouldn't do are the things we need to do, to find ourselves".
