From the first story: First Love at Midnight
Tonya often thought back to that night, that so long ago ignited her. She got excited just thinking about it as she folded her laundry. Though it seemed like a distant memory, it felt just like yesterday, especially when she focused on the details. She picked up her husband’s dirty coveralls and pulled them up to her face. His scent instantly transported her back.
It was midnight, 15 years ago, and the first step in what would now be her future. She breathed in deeply once more and let the memory take her.
She crept up the stairs slowly, hoping not to wake the rest of the house, but she was on a mission. She had to see him. Tonya and Rick were staying at his family home for the evening before they headed back out on the road. He had picked her up from her house in tiny Perry, Ga. They would be on their way to start their new lives at college first thing in the morning. It would be a 7 & 1/2 hour drive ahead of them, headed straight for New Orleans, and needed to get rest.
His parents had set her up in the downstairs guest room, making sure she was comfortable. The two of them had been best friends for as long as she could remember. There had been so many things they shared with one another, and if Tonya had her way this evening, they would share one more thing before their lives changed forever.
The stairs groaned beneath her feet, and she stopped momentarily, her breath catching in her throat. She could hear whispering at the other end of the hallway, sounded like Jenny was on the phone with her boyfriend again. Tonya braced herself against the wall, her heart pounding loudly in her chest. She could hear it in her ear. She almost turned back and ran down the stairs, when he opened his bedroom door. Spying her standing there at the top of the stairwell.
He motioned to her with a quick handwave and whispered, “Get in here, you fool.” He smiled at her as she darted quickly into his room.
“What are you doing?” she gasped.
Rick looked at her, quietly smiling and grabbing her knees as he closed the door. He spun her around, and she landed on his bed. Her hair bounced across her shoulders and lay in a mess of curls.
"Are you okay? You look like you are going to be sick.” His eyes made direct contact with hers.
“Can you just be quiet, I need to tell you something, and if you keep talking, I will never be able to.” She stood up and looked at him. She could feel her whole body flush, and the words stuck in the back of her throat. She looked him over as the flush began to rise even more.
He stood there in his gray sweatpants without a shirt on, his auburn hair slightly messy and curled around his hazel eyes.
She swallowed hard and closed her eyes, forcing herself to tell him…
“I am in love with you, but not just love you like a friend, I am crazy in love with you.” She opened her eyes to see him walking towards her. Bracing herself against the chair as he got within inches of her face.
