I want to thank the YWCA team, CEO Frances Crimmins, President Carina Zeccola, Issy Daly, Eleanor Sander O'Hearn, and Eva Barnes, for your commitment to empowering women through the work you do at YWCA.

I am privileged to have Elizabeth Lee MLA and Rebecca Vassarotti present the award to me. It was also wonderful to meet with Shane Rattenbury MLA at the awards event.

A big congratulations to the other recipients of the 2024 Great Ydeas Small Grants:
- Lew Ching Yip and Project Chosen Family

πŸ”¨ Time to break the concrete ceiling βš’

I had the privilege of interviewing Dr Ruwangi Fernando, a trailblazing expert in Information Technology and AI. Her journey is nothing short of inspiring, and I can't wait to share the remarkable insights from her conversation.

πŸš€ Ruwangi's path to success was ignited by her father's curiosity and love for gadgets. This early influence paved the way for her remarkable career in computer science, demonstrating the profound impact of mentorship and encouragement from an early age.

πŸ”“ She highlighted a vital distinction - women of colour in STEM face a "concrete ceiling," necessitating unique tools to shatter, distinct from the glass ceiling faced by women in general. Dr. Fernando emphasized the importance of providing targeted support and opportunities to address disparities in employment and representation, emphasizing the role of mentorship and sponsorship in this journey.

🌐 Diversity and inclusion in STEM were underscored as catalysts for innovation and broader market appeal. It's more than a mere checkbox exercise - it's about creating a vibrant tapestry of ideas and perspectives.

πŸ’ͺ Ruwangi's journey has led her to found two incredible initiatives: STEM Sisters and iSTEM Co (with co-founder Dr Morley Muse), dedicated to empowering women of colour in STEM fields. These platforms provide a supportive community to navigate challenges, setbacks, and encourage individual passion and perseverance.

πŸ‘ Her story is a testament to the transformative power of education, mentorship, and perseverance in the face of adversity. Let's continue to champion diversity, inclusion, and intersectionality in STEM. We're not just breaking ceilings; we're building bridges to a more inclusive and innovative future. 🌈
