NATURE - DAYTIME PRESENCE IS NOT CAUSE FOR ALARM

Imagine it’s 1:00 in the morning. You are usually asleep but you wake up. You are very thirsty and leave your bed to grab a glass of water. Your roommate sees you, freaks out and calls the cops because you are supposed to be sleeping right now. You are usually sleeping during this time so he thinks there is something very wrong with you.

Sounds ridiculous right? Exactly.

Nocturnal animals generally sleep during the day, but sometimes they wake up hungry or thirsty or maybe they just have to p*e. Sometimes mom and dad have to work odd hours to keep babies fed because they have a lot of mouths to feed.

The animal’s mental state and behavior tell us more about their health than what time they are awake.

An animal being awake when it usually isn’t is NOT cause for alarm or a diagnosis of rabies or any other disease.

Pictured below are four very healthy nocturnal animals awake during the day…

Adorable - not rabid.

NATURE - RARE NEONATE ORPHAN RACCOON SAVED FROM DEATH

An early surprise, this neonate Raccoon was brought to us after mom moved the rest of her babies and left this one behind. After waiting a full day and night, the finder brought this baby to us, as it was obvious mom was not going to return.

On exam, this baby was very cold and lethargic, with a swollen hind paw. No broken bones were found, so we suspect this is a soft-tissue injury that we are treating. After warming up slowly in an incubator, this baby quickly became more alert and active, and will be raised here at the Center!

This baby is a good reminder to be careful and respectful of wildlife trying to raise their young. Many people may attempt to trap and relocate adults (which is illegal in Virginia), but don't think to check for babies until it's too late, orphaning them unnecessarily. If you suspect you have an animal denning inside or around your home and are concerned, give us a call for advice on how to exclude wildlife humanely in ways that will allow moms to take their babies with them. If you find any babies alone, reuniting is always the best chance for an uninjured baby - please call before removing a baby.

Remember - do not feed or give water to animals in need, and be ESPECIALLY careful when handling wildlife - wear gloves, use towels or sheets, and once contained, do not handle further unless explicitly advised to do so by a licensed rehabilitator. Handling high-risk Rabies Vector Species (raccoons, foxes, groundhogs, skunks, and bats) inappropriately can often result in their euthanasia for rabies testing. When in doubt - give a shout, to your local wildlife rehabilitator, and help keep wildlife safe this baby season!
