Figs sustain more species of wildlife than any other kind of fruit. Over 1,200 species eat figs, including one-tenth of all the world's birds, nearly all known fruit-bats and dozens of species of primates, dispersing their seeds as they do so. Ecologists, therefore, call figs "keystone resources". Like the keystone of a bridge, if figs disappeared everything else could come crashing down.

Fresh figs are rich in nutrients while being relatively low in calories. However, there is a difference between dried figs and fresh figs. For context, one small fresh figs is approx 40 grams while one small dried fig is 8g.

The main point is that figs retain most of their nutrition when they are dried, however, they weigh less and are less filling. So the calories can really add up when you eat more to feel full.

This week we discuss figs! Sorry for the later ep drop today, we had some technical issues 😅

Did you know that the edible fig is one of the first plants that was cultivated by humans (Asia Minor)? An article in Science Magazine stated that nine fossilized figs, dating to about 9,400-9,200 B.C.E. were found in the early Neolithic village Gilgal I in the Jordan Valley. The find precedes the domestication of wheat, barley, and legumes, and maybe the first known instance of agriculture.

Coriander pairs well with a wide variety of foods like avocado, beans, lentils, peppers, rice, salads, salsas, and tomatoes. In Indian cuisine, you’ll often find it in vegetarian dishes like lentils and rice. With Mexican cuisine, it’s a staple in dishes like salsa, guacamole, burritos, and chilli. Professor Russell Keast, who specialises in sensory and food science at Deakin University’s School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, says genetics can be largely blamed for how we feel about it. ‘We have smell receptors in our nose that are responsible for identifying volatile compounds in the atmosphere, including volatile compounds released from potential foods,’ says Prof. Keast.

‘Sense of smell is highly variable between people, so what I experience may not be what you experience, and this can be due to quantity, type and natural variations with smell receptors. It’s these receptors that determine what we taste when we eat coriander. Depending on your smell receptors, you may experience a soap-like flavour, rather than the herby flavour others experience.

Several studies have shown that pineapple and its compounds may reduce the risk of cancers. This is because they may minimize oxidative stress and reduce inflammation.

Test-tube studies have shown that bromelain may also help fight cancer. For instance, two test-tube studies showed that bromelain suppressed the growth of breast cancer cells and stimulated cell death. Other test-tube studies show that bromelain suppresses cancer in the skin, bile duct, gastric system and colon, among other areas.
