Allen whirled around at the sound of branches breaking behind him. Groans echoed in the darkness beyond the tree line and he strained to discern if anyone was there, if there were any shapes at all out there in the darkness. The toxic pool bubbled and churned as it belched yellowed gaseous clouds into the air, like malevolent tendrils searching for meat. Lightning flashed overhead and the wailing intensified somewhere deep within the woods. But it was getting closer. The sky became an electric neon green and wall clouds enveloped the air above, pushing away all light from the area around him. Trees swayed in the strengthening wind and debris flew around his knees, fighting to take flight, taking chunks of flesh from his shins as the detritus swirled around his feet.
He bent down to wipe the blood from his legs with a trembling hand, pain shooting from his battered skin. With a bloody palm he realized he was wearing a hospital gown. Instinctively, he wiped his hand on the fabric, the lightness of it disturbingly unflattering. It flapped in the wind and lifted in the back. He wasn’t wearing that earlier, was he? He couldn’t remember. Couldn’t remember what he was wearing before this place, or where he was only moments ago. The groaning intensified as it grew closer. The storm was almost here.

A little PSA from Scover Publications. Please forgive the exposition at the beginning; I feel it is relevant. For five years my wife and I ran a small business in a small midwest community. It was just us and the occasional part time employee or two. During that time, we had to be careful about what we voiced publicly in fear of losing business we so desperately needed. Small town, narrow minds. Scover Publications will not be so timid. We believe Black Lives Matter and are 100 percent against police brutality. We stand with those speaking up, those that are peacefully protesting the atrocious treatment of our citizens. If this deters you from submitting your stories to us, if this keeps you from buying the works of talented authors we strive to publish just because we believe murder is wrong and the time for accountability has come- fine. Don't send your stuff in, don't buy our books. Silence is no longer an option. Scover's will do fine without you.

Thinking of doing a fall issue...themed. Maybe on hope for the future or tales from quarantine, that kind of thing.
