Naast de genealogische basisset – DTB-registers, burgerlijke stand en de bevolkingsregistraties – zijn er nog veel meer bronnen in www.WieWasWie.nl te vinden waarin je op zoek kunt naar je voorouders. Zoals de scheepssoldijboeken van de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC). En vandaag, 20 maart, is het precies 422 jaar geleden dat de VOC werd opgericht.

In de scheepssoldijboeken werd de personeels- en salarisadministratie van alle betaalde opvarenden van een VOC-schip nauwgezet bijgehouden. De salarisrekening opende op de dag dat het schip Nederland verliet, en werd gesloten met de uitbetaling aan het einde van het dienstverband.

Een van de opvarenden is kapitein Ulke/ Uilke Barends uit Havenveere. Op 6 april 1793 vertrekt hij met de Mentor naar Batavia. Na een voorspoedige reis van zes maanden, duurt het ruim een jaar voordat de Mentor weer richting Nederland zeilt in een vloot met zestien andere VOC-schepen. Maar op 14 juni 1795 varen zij bij Sint Helena in een hinderlaag van de Engelsen, en wordt de vloot gekaapt. Wat Barends bij zijn vertrek niet weet, is dat dit de allerlaatste VOC-vloot zou zijn die ooit uit zou varen.

William BARRET Travis.

The Travis Letter

On February 24, 1836, with the garrison surrounded and the Texan Army at the Alamo outnumbered, one of the most famous letters in American history was written by William B. Travis. It was addressed, “To the People of Texas and All Americans in the World.” This letter was a passionate plea for aid for the Alamo garrison. He ended the letter “Victory or Death” – the only outcome this battle could have.

To the People of Texas & All Americans in the World-

Fellow Citizens & compatriots-

I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna - I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man - The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken - I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the walls - I shall never surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch - The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country - Victory or Death.
