Ryan Digital

Ryan Digital Hi I am Ryan and I here is where I post all my Unreal Engine related content. I am the HOD of show lighting at Blond Productions based in Pretoria.
(1)

I have specialized in creative lighting for television for 15 years and have recently had the great privilege of bridging my other passion into my career which is 3D digital art. In short, utilizing Unreal Engine to create virtual experiences with LED walls/green screens as well as doing previsualization to show colleagues and clients what productions would/could look like. I have enjoyed the jour

ney of bringing together my unique combination of skills sets and look forward to sharing them on this page. The potential in this technology is truly limitless. From productions done Mandalorian style with gigantic LED volumes to low cost creative music videos done on greenscreen, VR experiences for corporate clients or previsualization before a big production to test out ideas, the only true limitation is imagination. On this page I share all my experimental ideas and, when I am able, productions that I have done once they pass the confidentiality phase.

The last weeks have been a blast working on Daddy Yo, my animation show for my kids. I am going away for a bit for work so have been hard at work during the nights to get everything ready.

I have been working on a different format. Daddy Yo reading popular Fairy Tales called "Daddy Yo's Bedtime Stories". The unique challenge here was to create a book that I could easily colour and change images into. I tried a couple of solutions but ended up with this bad boy.

I think it fits the style really well and swapping content for different episodes is a breeze. So chuffed with it!

This project brought some unique challenges. 👀

From concept to 1st product took about 2 months. Working hours on this was only after the kids had gone to bed and over weekends. I am super proud of what was achieved.

Is it perfect? Not even close, but it is well within what I believe is an achievable product for my current skill level.

I learned a great deal and can’t wait to see how my skills progress.

I am thrilled to have participated and contributed to the challenge initiated by Pwnisher with the Eternal Ascent challenge. As a long-time observer, becoming a first-time participant has been a personal goal of mine for quite some time.

Since the Rokoko Intergalactic TV challenge, I've been pushing myself to elevate my skills! When you see the quality others are producing, it's a motivator to step up your game!

This render is a testament to the power of determination. I'm proud of the growth I've achieved since the last challenge.

Enjoy witnessing the culmination of all the hard work, condensed into 5 glorious seconds.

Behind the scenes for my submission of the Rokoko Intergalactic TV challenge. This pretty much documents my journey of learning Rokoko's motion capture solution, the workflow and applying it to my custom characters. (More or less 😛)

Spent most of yesterday on an Unreal Engine mission: exploring the hair and groom system, creating a basic character for animation tests, and experimenting with retargeting motion capture animations.

Then, my son walked in, and things got creative! We had a blast tweaking choreography, fur colors, and lighting. The result? A little video for us capturing our fantastic time.

Admittedly, I might have had too much fun 🤣

I made this motion animation in Unreal Engine 5 for my wife's vocal school called The Vocal Factory. Blown away daily with the power given to creators. I created a couple others that I'll share in time

This virtual environment is still one of my personal favorites. Definitely Joburg city inspired. I remember having that surreal feeling looking back at it once it was done.

This is a prime example of how amazing technology can be.

Here is a SciFi environment built from scratch. This is then skinned and fleshed out in Unreal Engine 5.

When we get to the studio phase this gets mapped to a LED wall that acts as a portal into the virtual world, meaning relative position can be dialed in to create a realistic perspective into the virtual environment making it more believable to camera and viewer.

Then, more fun as I connect additional virtual elements to a lighting console, giving me full control of the colour and brightness of the stone rings as well as the tempo of the running chases. This also ties in to the real lights of the studio, helping with the blending of the worlds. Ofcourse we had to take it one step further and link the perspective to the lighting console creating a warping effect of which I could also control the size and speed.
