Wonderful memories from Svalbard last year, and some of them are now streaming on BBC One! "The Grinch: A reindeer-hunting polar bear" by Florian Ledoux, Camera Operator for Mammals. I recommend watching it!

We came across several polar bears hunting reindeers last year in different parts of Svalbard. On a few of the trips Florian Ledoux was onboard with us and he got some amazing footage of some of these hunts.

We have never seen bears hunt reindeers until 2023, so it was quite extraordinary to watch! Although in 2022 we came across a bear with a reindeer kill in the tidal area. All covered up in seaweed. I suspect that might have been one of the reindeer hunting bears.

Thank you Secret Atlas for taking us to amazing places and experiencing encounters, both with wildlife and people! In two weeks we are back on Vikingfjord in Svalbard. I hope to see some of you there!

Australia's Black Summer of 2019-2020 was characterised by catastrophic bushfires. The bushfire season started in winter and was the worst on record for NSW in terms of its intensity, the area burned, and the number of properties lost. It was also the worst season on record for properties lost in Qu...

A thought from me that stemmed from a conversation on climate change. Much of big business knows it's happening and will be devastating as do many wealthy individuals and investors. The simple reality to them is they do not care as long as their short time on the planet is filled with priviledge and luxury. Their money will buy them a buffer and they simply do not care what happens once they are gone. This is the direct view of one of the world's eminent geologists. Here is the actual hurdle you must pass with many. Short term greed and safety in their finite lives. I'll add more from this specific conversation soon.

THE AUSTRALIAN BUSH IS GUTTED, AS ARE WE ... HOLDING BACK TEARS THAT THREATEN TO FLOW WITH THE ARCTIC ICE. Our Study Tour has been postponed until next year. First we lost the boat we'd booked, then restrictions disrupted our capacity to travel. But the show still goes on, and students still have a course to complete and important messages to convey. We will turn our attention to the in Australia. Watch this space.

NB: If you've made a donation or pledge we will be in touch.

Keep your ears out for a new podcast episode soon, that will explain in more detail.

Australia’s recent bushfires are a sign of the increasing impact climate change is having on our planet. Although sometimes it may feel like a large issue we can’t quite fathom, the increase of temperature up in the Arctic has a direct and dire impact on the drought and fire seasons here in Australia.

Our students are going to be directly conveying these climate issues back to an Australian audience.

If you want to support us in this venture there is still time; https://www.pozible.com/project/signal-to-noise-arctic-in-field

Dedicated to the Arctic and the telling of climate change stories, documentary photographers Yuri Kozyrev and Kadir van Lohuizen conducted a double polar expedition project, “Arctic: New Frontier”, focusing on the consequences of the melting of the arctic sea ice for the planet, and the prospect of its total disappearance.

From Russia to Norway, Greenland, Canada and Alaska, they explored key issues affecting the Arctic - the opening of new trade routes, the militarisation of borders, the search for mineral resources, polar tourism, etc. - and their impact on our daily lives.

“The melting of the polar sea ice is in the process of changing the map of the world for ever. In visiting all the affected regions and countries in one expedition and by showing how the different players – starting with Russia and the U.S. – are working on conquering the North Pole, we are revealing how the impact of climate change in the Arctic is of global significance for the rest of the world.”

Come meet (most of) the Signal to Noise Arctic Study Tour 2020 team, and participate in our event in Toohey Forest, near the Griffith University, Nathan campus.

We've chose to as a way of off-setting the environmental impact of our flights to Svalbard.

We'll be at the Ring Road pick-up/drop-off point at midday and then heading to the bushwalks surrounding campus so don't be late!
