A: 988 was established to improve access to crisis services in a way that meets our country’s growing su***de and mental health-related crisis care needs. 988 provides easier access to the Lifeline network and related crisis resources, which are distinct from the public safety purposes of 911 (where the focus is on dispatching Emergency Medical Services, fire and police as needed).

Astoria Regatta Week: A Time-Honored Tradition of Maritime Celebration https://astoriaregatta.com/

Get ready, Clatsop County! The highly anticipated Astoria Regatta Week is just around the corner, set to take place from August 9th to August 12th, 2023. As one of the oldest festivals west of the Rockies, the Regatta holds a special place in the hearts of locals, embracing the rich maritime history of the Northwest while looking forward to an exciting future.

Since its inception in 1894, the Astoria Regatta has been a beloved family tradition, uniting communities across Clatsop County, from Knappa to Warrenton, Gearhart to Seaside, and Cannon Beach and beyond. Recognized as a Historic Cultural Tradition by the Oregon State Historic Commission, the Regatta has been etched into the fabric of our region, weaving together heritage and a spirit of togetherness.

At the core of the Astoria Regatta lies the growth of tomorrow's leaders. For over a century, the Regatta Court has showcased a distinguished group of young women from local high schools. Serving as ambassadors, each princess receives not only a generous scholarship but also invaluable mentorship from prominent female leaders within our community. This tradition nurtures the potential of these remarkable individuals, empowering them to become catalysts for positive change.

The four-day extravaganza kicks off with Wednesday Welcome, where the reigning Regatta Queen bids farewell, passing the torch to the new Queen at the majestic Queen's Coronation held at The Liberty Theater. Be sure to join in the celebration at the Queen's Reception and meet the entire Royal Court.

Thursday is dedicated to family fun, with the Kiwanis Junior Parade taking center stage at Warrenton City Park. This delightful tradition, featuring our youngest community members, promises a memorable experience for all. Stay after the parade for a magical outdoor movie under the starlit sky—a perfect way to unwind and create lasting memories with loved ones.

Friday holds a special place of honor, paying tribute to the brave souls who have ventured to sea and made the ultimate sacrifice. The day commences with the Gathering of Past Admirals and Presidents Luncheon, followed by a poignant ceremony at the Maritime Memorial Park beneath the iconic Astoria-Megler Bridge. United in respect, we honor the Navy, Coast Guard, commercial fishermen, and others who have dedicated their lives to the sea. The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Commander, alongside Regatta Admirals and the reigning Regatta Queen, will preside over the Seamen's Memorial, commemorating the bravery and resilience of those who have navigated treacherous waters. As the evening unfolds, the Admiral's Reception becomes Astoria's social highlight, featuring delectable appetizers prepared by the city's finest chefs and an array of craft beers and wines from our world-renowned microbreweries.

Saturday, the grand day of the Regatta, promises excitement galore! Start your morning by cheering on the participants of the 1-mile Fun Run, where runners compete for cash prizes. At noon, the spectacular Grand Land Parade takes over the streets of Downtown Astoria, showcasing incredible floats, spirited dancers, and marching bands. Joining the procession is our esteemed Astoria Regatta Court and this year's Grand Marshal. Regatta Square, nestled in the heart of the downtown parade route, will serve as the epicenter of festivities, offering a multitude of delectable food options, live music, and a Kids' Fun Zone, ensuring that every member of the family has an unforgettable time.

Before the sun sets on this extraordinary day, the Highwater Boat Parade will grace the waters, displaying a vibrant array of vessels, ranging from small sport craft and sailboats to commercial fishing boats and larger industrial craft. Be sure to keep an eye out for the awe-inspiring sight of the Columbia River Bar Pilots leading the procession, accompanied by the Regatta Queen and Royal Court.

Come and join us as we celebrate one of the oldest festivals west of the Rocky Mountains. While immersing yourself in the spirit of the Astoria Regatta, take the time to explore our historic downtown area, savor the culinary delights offered by our exceptional restaurants, and discover the wonders of the Sunset Empire. Brace yourself for an unforgettable experience, where maritime history meets vibrant festivities. Once you've experienced the magic of the Astoria Regatta Week, you may find it hard to bid farewell to our captivating coastal haven.

Join us August 9-12, 2023 for the Astoria Regatta Festival! Our four day festival features multiple parades, Regatta Square celebration, and other events throughout the area.

Standing in Solidarity: Clatsop County Nurses Take a Stand for Fairness.

As our community grapples with the ongoing challenges of a changing healthcare landscape, we find ourselves confronted with a stark reality: the nurses of Providence Portland, Providence Seaside, and Providence Home Health and Hospice have taken to the streets, embarking on a five-day strike. These dedicated healthcare professionals, numbering approximately 1,800, are demanding improved working conditions, higher wages, and better access to essential healthcare services. The Clatsop Equity stands in solidarity with these nurses, recognizing their vital role in our community, particularly during the relentless hardships imposed by the 2020 pandemic.

Proudly standing outside the Providence Home Services building, a small but resolute group of nurses expressed their concerns and frustrations, their voices amplified through their signs and unwavering dedication. Pax Schneider, an occupational therapist for Providence, encapsulated the sentiment felt by many, remarking, "It's pretty discouraging to have to stand outside and hold a sign in order for the employer to do what's right. It shouldn't come to that."

The nurses' demands encompass not only fair compensation but also improved access to comprehensive healthcare benefits, including mental health support, increased paid time off, and sick leave. Providence officials have presented their offer, including 30 additional hours of paid time off over three years and a 12% raise in the first year of the contract, followed by 3% raises in the subsequent two years. While Providence asserts that the average nurse already earns $128,000 per year, the union refutes this claim, emphasizing that it represents the upper end of the current pay scale.

Jennifer Gentry of Providence aptly recognizes the challenges faced by both nurses and the community, highlighting the importance of fair negotiation and subsequent healing and reconciliation. She acknowledges the noticeable impact of the strike on Providence Seaside Hospital and Providence Portland Medical Center, where operations have been reduced by 50% and 25%, respectively. Despite the presence of replacement nurses, the absence of these skilled caregivers is palpable, leaving gaps that cannot be easily filled.

As the strike continues and our community navigates this challenging time, the Clatsop Equity urges all stakeholders to come together, engage in meaningful dialogue, and work towards a fair contract that respects the invaluable contributions of our nurses. It is essential to recognize that their work goes far beyond merely providing medical care—it is a labor of compassion and dedication, requiring a deep understanding of each patient's unique needs.

The Providence nurses' strike serves as a reminder of the significance of our healthcare professionals, especially in the wake of the pandemic that continues to shape our lives. We owe them our gratitude and unwavering support as they fight for equitable treatment and fair working conditions. Let us stand with them, acknowledging their sacrifices, and ensure that their voices are heard.

The strike is scheduled to conclude on Friday, and we sincerely hope that Providence and the union can return to the negotiating table, paving the way for a just and compassionate resolution. Together, we can create a healthcare system that values and supports those who tirelessly care for our community—our dedicated nurses.

Today, as the nation commemorates Juneteenth, a day that marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, it is important to recognize the significance of this holiday in our community, even with a relatively small percentage of black residents. Juneteenth is a time for reflection, education, and celebration of the rich history and contributions of black people, both past, and present, in Clatsop County.

While Clatsop County may have a small population of black residents, the essence of Juneteenth extends far beyond demographics. It serves as a reminder of our collective history, the pursuit of justice, and the ongoing struggle for equality that should resonate with every citizen, regardless of their background. It provides an opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate the profound impact black individuals have had on our county's growth, culture, and success.

Juneteenth originated in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived, belatedly proclaiming the news of the Emancipation Proclamation to the last enslaved African Americans in the United States. This event signifies the end of slavery and the beginning of a new chapter in American history.

By celebrating Juneteenth, Clatsop County honors the enduring spirit of resilience, determination, and triumph over adversity. It is an occasion to learn about the struggles and accomplishments of black Americans, paying tribute to their extraordinary contributions in various fields, including education, arts, politics, and entrepreneurship. By recognizing their contributions, we foster a more inclusive and understanding community.

On this Juneteenth, let us recognize and appreciate the unique perspectives, talents, and achievements of our black neighbors and friends. Their presence in Clatsop County represents an opportunity for cultural exchange, learning, and growth. By fostering an environment that values diversity and promotes inclusivity, we can build bridges of understanding and create a more unified community.

As we come together to celebrate Juneteenth, let us remember that the holiday symbolizes a commitment to equality, justice, and the ongoing fight against systemic racism. By acknowledging the contributions of black residents in Clatsop County and embracing the spirit of Juneteenth, we move towards a more inclusive and united community.

Today, we encourage everyone to participate in Juneteenth celebrations, attend events, engage in conversations, and take time to reflect on the importance of equality and diversity in our society. By honoring the past and embracing the present, we pave the way for a brighter, more equitable future for all residents of Clatsop County.

Juneteenth reminds us that progress is not limited by the size of a population but by the depth of understanding and appreciation for one another. Let us seize this opportunity to foster unity, promote inclusivity, and celebrate the rich tapestry of our diverse community on this significant day.
