Aretha Wanted Halle but Chose Hudson
Aretha wanted Halle, but chose Hudson instead!
Jennifer Hudson will play Aretha Franklin in her biopic film "Respect." Production begins Nov. 1. The biopic will be released on Aug. 14, 2020, with Universal handling overseas.
The "Queen of Soul" originally wanted Halle Berry to portray her in the movie. Franklin told Billboard.com in 2011 that she hoped Halle Berry would play her, although the Oscar-winning actress was concerned that she’d have to sing. “A lot of movies come out where it’s the original artist and their songs are lip-sung to,” Franklin explained. “That is how it would turn out if it’s Halle. If not, if for ice, it’s Jennifer Hudson, she might sing one or two, but the rest would still be my original records. We’re definitely going to use the original records. I may re-record some things, too.”
The film will cover the rise of Franklin’s career from a child singing in her father’s church’s choir to her international superstardom. The Film is destined to be a success with the all-star cast as follows: Marc Maron (Jerry Wexler), Forest Whitaker (C. L. Franklin), Tate Donovan (John Hammond), Marlon Wayans (Ted White), Tituss Burgess (Reverend Dr. James Cleveland), Jennifer Hudson (Aretha Franklin) Audra McDonald (Barbara Franklin) Mary J. Blige (Dinah Washington), Saycon Sengbloh (Erma Franklin), Heather Headley (Clara Ward), Leroy McClain (Cecil Franklin), Hailey Kilgore (Carolyn Franklin), and Skye Dakota Turner (Young Aretha Franklin)
Aretha fans will be happy to know that Ms. Framklin emphasized how she wanted her life depicted. According to Bernstein and Mason Jr., “We were given the rare privilege to work with Ms. Franklin directly to curate the stories she most wanted to share and the moments in her life that made her who she was. Over the years, she imparted to us how important it was to her that we share her story on the big screen and how important it was to have Jennifer in this role. To have that kind of deeply personal trust and insight from Ms. Franklin was nothing short of amazing for everyone involved.”
