Sultan Inaugurates 10.2km Dual Carriageway In Bayelsa

*My Administration Doesn’t Play Politics With Development, Says Gov Diri

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa'ad Abubakar III, on Thursday, inaugurated phase two of the newly-completed Glory Drive dual carriageway, a 10.2-kilometer road project constructed by the Governor Douye Diri administration.

The road, which stretches from Igbogene through several communities and eventually terminates at Onopa in the Yenagoa city centre, was conceptualsed by former President Goodluck Jonathan when he was governor of the state.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Sultan said he was proud to be associated with Senator Diri's success story in the development of Bayelsa State.

The respected royal father stressed that the nation's strength lies in its diversity, noting that it was important for leaders from far away to come and appreciate what the Diri administration was doing in terms of development of the state and work together to better the lot of the people.

Sultan Abubakar, who said the visit was his second in 22 years, urged the governor and his team to continue to do more to impact meaningfully on the lives of the people.

"This is the second time that l'm visiting Bayelsa since 2001, that is 22 years ago, and I'm very impressed with the level of development that has taken place in the state.

"I am happy to be part of this history in the commissioning of this road project. God has put you in this position to serve the people. You are their servant.

“As leaders, we should continue to work together to better the lot of our people. It is important for leaders from far away to come and see what you are doing. Our strength is in our diversity."

In his remarks, Senator Douye Diri vowed that his administration will never play politics with development of the state, noting that the Glory Drive project was not only for supporters of PDP, APC or Labour Party but for the generality of the people.

According to the governor, the road was conceived during the Dr Goodluck Jonathan administration in the state under which he served as commissioner.

Diri noted that upon assuming office in 2020, he decided to re-award the road contract to the Chinese construction giant, CCECC.

"We are bringing development to every area in Bayelsa State. Even development and shared prosperity are the defining characteristics of our government of prosperity.

"We know that in the absence of peace and harmony, sustainable prosperity cannot be guaranteed. We have endeavoured as a government to foster peace and reconciliation. I often said that those who will kill and maim in their desperate quest to gain political power cannot mean well for you.

"Development and peace are like Siamese twins. Development and peace are inseparable. Where there is no peace, there will be no development, and where there is no development there will be no peace."

Also, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Moses Teibowei, stated that the project was constructed at the cost of N30 billion.

He stated that after it was conceptualized under the Jonathan administration and constructed from the East-West road to the Igbogene roundabout, the project was mismanaged under the Chief Timipre Sylva administration after awarding the contract to a construction firm.

The commissioner said Governor Diri has directed the commencement of the third phase of the road to Onopa.

"Phase two of the project, starting from igbogene roundabout to the airport road was started by Chief Timipre Sylva administration and awarded to Fak Engineering Limited with the sum of N9 billion paid. The contractor cleared the entire length of the project but sand filled and did stone-base of only 1.5 kilometers and abandoned it.

"When the prosperity government of Senator Diri came on board, it deemed it fit to continue construction because of its strategic location, importance and economic viability to Bayelsa .

"The road measures about 10.2 kilometers. It has dual carriageway of 7.3 metres width, with two-metre shoulder on each drive way.

“It also has four metres wide median, a walkway of 1.4 metres either sides, one major roundabout and 12 culverts.

"Governor Diri has also approved the commencement of the Glory Drive Phase 3, which stretches from the airport road to Onopa and the Government House."

The Sultan earlier visited the Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers Council where he called on state governments to work closely with traditional rulers to engender development.

2022 Flooding: Bayelsa Govt Acknowledges Donations
..Diri Directs Fresh Distribution Of Items To Communities

Bayelsa State government has acknowledged donations from international agencies, state governments, political parties and their presidential candidates, individuals and corporate organisations in the wake of the 2022 flooding that ravaged the state.

Governor Douye Diri in his opening remarks at the weekly state executive council meeting in Government House, Yenagoa, on Wednesday disclosed that the government received donations in form of cash, foodstuff and other materials from well-meaningful individuals and corporate organisations during and after the floods.

The governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, restated his administration’s commitment to transparency and assured the people that they would not be left in the dark as regards the flood donations.

He listed the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, the Akwa Ibom and Lagos state governments, which donated N100m and N50m respectively, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar (N55m), and his counterpart in the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo (N10m) as some of the donors.

Other donors are Dr. Azibapu Eruani of the Azikel Group, who he said has started redeeming his pledge of N350million worth of items, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Century Energy Group, Chief Ken Etete (N50m).

The governor also disclosed that the South Korean Ambassador to Nigeria donated $100,000, Access Bank N100m, Zenith Bank N20m, Linkage Assurance N20m, Sterling Oil N15m, Paache Construction N10m and AITEO N50m.

Organisations that donated items include the Tompolo Foundation 440 cartons of noodles, 595 bags of 50kg rice, 35 jerrycans of 25kg palm oil, groundnut oil 180 cartons, garri 40 50kg bags, beans 20 100kg bags as well as 500 tubers of yam.

Others are Globus Bank 70 bags of 50kg rice and 100 cartons of noodles, Stanbic Bank 146 4x6’ mattresses, 148 pillows and 150 plastic buckets.

The rest are Julius Berger 100 bags of 50kg rice, Redeemed Christian Church of God 100 bags of 50kg rice, Brass Petrochemical and Fertiliser Company 100 bags of 50kg rice, 100 bags of 50kg garri and 100 bags of 100kg beans.

The governor directed the task force on flood mitigation and management and the Bayelsa State Emergency Management Agency (BYSEMA) to immediately resume distribution of items in the warehouse to all affected communities in the state.

He also assured that the donations will be prudently used and urged people of the state to exercise patience with the process of distributing the relief materials to victims.

He further stated that the process will be devoid of political colouration.

His words: "We never played politics with the flood and the relief items for victims. The whole world saw it. Those who came to play politics, the whole world equally saw them.

“In all that we did, we never discriminated against any political party. And we commend particularly our people that bore the brunt of the flood.

“As a government, we will take decisions in the best interest of our people. Everything should not be politicised.“

Southerners Shunning Polygamy Contributing To Prostitution -Ned Nwoko

Ned Nwoko, the husband of actress, Regina Daniels, has blamed southern Nigerian men, who shun polygamy for contributing to prostitution in society.

Nwoko, who is seeking the senatorial seat for the
Delta North in the 2023 poll said this in an interview with Guardian Nigeria on Saturday.

He said, “Many women are out there on their own without husbands, especially in the southern part of the country, and there is a high level of prostitution. What some of our girls do to make ends meet is regrettable and if our men emulate their northern counterparts by having more than one wife, that could probably change the situation.

“The average southern may have only one wife, but many girlfriends also, and he is spending his money on the girlfriends; sometimes even more than on his wife. The man, who has three wives, for instance, concentrates on them and his children; every money he makes is spent on the family and he is more likely not to have any girlfriends or concubines. The money those with several girlfriends spend on them is a gift, not an investment in the family.”

Nwoko, who has four wives and 19 children added that he and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, were serving Nigeria by marrying many women.

"My grandfather and the Ooni’s grandfather and the then Olowo of Owo took many photographs together. So, the Ooni and I have that kind of common background, because our grandfathers were kings and served Nigeria in that capacity. And we are now also serving Nigeria by having many wives (laughter).”

Flooding: Don't Despair, Diri Urges Bayelsans As State Holds Thanksgiving

*Jonathan, Dickson, Jonah Seek Support For Victims

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has urged people of the state not to be daunted in the face of the obvious challenges caused by the ravaging floods.

Speaking during the 11th annual thanksgiving of the state at the Ecumenical Centre in Igbogene, Governor Diri commended the people for turning out en masse for the event despite being displaced and rendered homeless by the floods.

The state’s helmsman commended the resilience of the people that he noticed as he traversed the length and breadth of the state to sympathize with the victims and expressed optimism that better days were ahead.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah quoted him as saying that some persons tried to discourage government from holding the annual thanksgiving due to the flooding but was thankful to God that the event held.

He expressed confidence that God Almighty would reward people of the state for their faith.

Diri lauded former President Goodluck Jonathan, his predecessor in office, Senator Seriake Dickson, Pastor Paul Eneche and all who made sacrifices to be part of this year's thanksgiving.

He stressed that the flood, which did not discriminate based on party affiliation, has highlighted the need for leaders and people of the state to unite.

His words "The irony is that since the floods came, I have been traversing communities and visiting the people across all the local government areas. I have had the privilege of knowing another dimension of grace in the life of our great people. They are resilient, tenacious, courageous, joyous, and full of unexampled charity and thankfulness. Wherever I have visited to empathize with the people, I have rather left more edified and energized.

"Out of the little that they manage to rescue from their farms, they have given me provision of foodstuff. It is the authentic generous Ijaw spirit, which looks out for each other. I have never been more proud of our people than at this time. Perhaps if the naysayers leave the comfort of their homes, they too will appreciate the mood of the people.

“Indeed, if there is a time that we need to give thanks, it is now. The Bible declares that those who know their God will be strong and they will do exploits. We only need to reflect on February 13, 2020 to know that we serve a Mighty God. The same God who delivered us from COVID-19 surely will also deliver us from this flood.

"This flood did not affect people along party lines. It should be a clear message to us that we have common challenges and we can only solve them when we are united. Let us not be deceived into fractionalizing to suit the political interest of politicians who look for us only when they need our votes."

In his remarks, former President Goodluck Jonathan appreciated former Governor Seriake Dickson for building the Ecumenical Centre and instituting the annual thanksgiving, saying as a people we can achieve nothing without God.

He also lauded Governor Diri for continuing the thanksgiving, saying his administration has made God a priority and will always receive divine blessings.

On the issue of the ravaging floods, Dr. Jonathan joined the call for the Federal Government to assist the state in the recovery process, saying that he was optimist that given the efforts he had made alongside other leaders, help will come from the centre.

“Let me commend Senator Dickson for showing commitment to the service of God. He built this edifice and initiated this thanksgiving service. You place God first and God will continue to bless you and bless the state.

“Let me also thank Governor Diri for continuing with the programme. I thank the clergymen for their continuous work as well as Pastor Paul Eneche for his service to God and nation.

"I do not want to overemphasize the disaster that has befallen us. Everybody is an IDP (internally displaced person) in Bayelsa State. I have discussed with the President and Vice President and I believe help will come.

“We empathize with all of you. Coming out today when we are still affected by the flood is significant,” Jonathan said.

In their goodwill messages, Senator Seriake Dickson and his then deputy, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah (rtd), emphasized the need for the federal government to come to the aid of the state to mitigate the effects of the flood.

The leaders commended the people of the state for their display of love for godly things and expressed optimism that divine blessings will never cease from the state as God had never abandoned His people.

Delivering a sermon, Pastor Paul Eneche of the Dunamis International Church praised the people for coming out to praise God despite the difficulty times they face.

He likened their situation to that of the people of God in the past like Paul and Silas who praised God in difficult moments and were blessed.

The cleric said the grace and mercy of God were the most fundamental assets of a Christian, stressing that His grace can make anybody great.

He prayed for God’s blessings on the state, especially now that the people were going through the challenges occasioned by the floods.
