Luis Rubiales resigned as president of the Spanish soccer federation two weeks after insisting he wouldn’t step down over boorish behavior at the World Cup final that included grabbing his crotch and kissing a Spain player without her consent.

"It is evident that I cannot return to my duties," he said in a statement written in Spanish. "Insisting on waiting and hoping to hold on is not going to contribute to anything positive neither for the Spanish Federation nor for Spanish football.”

He did not apologize for his actions and said, “I have faith in the future. I have faith in the truth."

Despite his earlier defiance, it was clear Rubiales remaining as head of Spain’s soccer federation was untenable, especially after FIFA suspended him last month.

Michigan State University head football coach Mel Tucker has been suspended without pay after sexual misconduct allegations levied against him came to light, the university announced on Sunday.

Brenda Tracy, a r**e survivor and prominent activist, accused Tucker of making sexual comments toward her, a USA TODAY investigation revealed.

Georgia easily retains the No. 1 ranking, receiving all but one of the 65 first-place votes cast this week. Michigan holds at No. 2, picking up the remaining first-place nod.

Things start to change at No. 3 thanks to Alabama’s home loss to Texas. Florida State vaults into the third spot, hopping over Ohio State. Southern California moves up to No. 5, narrowly holding off Texas by a single poll point.

It is nevertheless a significant move for the Longhorns, as they move up four places on the strength of the victory in Tuscaloosa.

The USWNT is headed home. Ousted by Sweden. Again. On penalties. Again.

Alyssa Naeher appeared to deflect Lina Hurtig’s shot, but video assistant referee showed the ball rolled back across the goal line by millimeters, giving Sweden the 5-4 win on penalties after a scoreless draw in the round of 16. This is the earliest exit the USWNT has ever made at a major tournament, having reached the semifinals at all but one World Cup and Olympics.

As soon as the referee signaled that Sweden’s final kick was good, Sweden players rushed toward the goal while Naeher and the Americans stood there stunned. The call will be controversial — some part of the ball has to be over the line, and it just barely was.

After the U.S. women's national team fell to Sweden in the Wold Cup, some who claim to be American patriots cheered at the loss.

"There is nothing, absolutely nothing, Rapinoe or anyone else on the team has done to deserve this level of anti-American vitriol," USA TODAY Sports columnist Mike Freeman writes. "Rapinoe has supported the transgender community and the movement started by Kaepernick. She is, easily, one of the most honorable and noble athletes in American sports history.
