HMS Plymouth Review
TLDR
A hight skill floor cruiser that’s not fit for the casual player, Map Awareness is key, AP only with area of denial torpedoes, Smoke or Radar not both, basically a tier 7 Fiji.
One of the Designs for the Fables Town-Class cruiser of the Royal Navy Taking the potent class of light cruiser to the next level by lengthening the ship and replacing the 3 triple 152mm turrets with 4 quadruple 152mm guns but unfortunately (or fortunately depending on what side of the war you were on) This design never made it off paper due to the complexity of the quad turret design and the performance of the already well established triple 152mm and we ended up with HMS Belfast (which you can visit in the City of London) and HMS Edinbrugh which both have some significant histories during ww2.
The good the bad and the ugly
HMS Plymouth has a 16 gun 152mm broadside which also boast an impressive base reload if 6.5 seconds giving it the 4th highest DPM at the tier at 457k per minute (with the right build and the epic mod maxed out we can see 5 seconds giving a late game dpm of 595,200)
2x4 torpedoes with a base 10km range and a reasonably low 8 second reaction time making them quite the auxiliary armament
Short fuse British AP, this is absolutely devastating to destroyers and also incredibly effective against broad side super structure and cruisers alike, its one downside is it lack effectiveness against bow tanking ships
Movement, although HMS Plymouth is not the fastest or most agile ship in the game it boasts the classic British cruiser traits of fast acceleration, tight turning radius and of course the speed is not really effected during turns
Good base concealment (stealth radar is possible for the brave and bold)
Low citadel and a raided armour belt allowing Plymouth to bounce battleship calibre guns if angled carefully.
Its not all good thought there are some downside
The firing angles are horrid exposing the ship to significant damage
The range of the guns are quite low for the tier forcing more aggressive and careful placement of the ship, along with a low HP pool putting it mid pack but also has a 16mm bow and stern making Plymouth quite fragile too (this is negated slightly by the heal giving the effective hit points 58k ranking 6th overall, and mediocre AA suite
Playstyle
HMS Plymouth will feel incredibly comfortable to player who have spent time in British light cruiser (with Edinburgh being the exception with its god tier bow) adopt a Fiji/Belfast play style of sticking close to your DDs protecting them against the enemy with either radar, or smoke and using your DPM to qu**ky dispatch enemy DDs and cruisers. Full frontal engagements should be avoided particularly with battleships, American and Soviet heavy cruisers and the Edinburgh
If caught out by battleships and heavy cruisers do not try and use all your gun, with the awful firing angles you will expose yourself to easy citadels hits and you will be back in port before you can say “BY Joe that Hurt” you cannot afford to use all your guns unless in smoke or behind cover
Although fitted with reasonably good torpedoes the maximum output is only 67k per side, meaning you don’t really have dev strike capabilities against most battleships and are better used for area of denial than an all out offensive weapon
The AA suite is not great, poor 5km dps, mid pack 3.2km dps and 2km dps although good ins not going to save you taking multiple hits from carriers and little reason for a CV to avoid you
Armour
Plymouths armour is not good, 16mm bow and stern and 51mm casemate armour meaning 228mm gun can over match your bow and even 152mm can easily pen your citadel if given the right angle. The one saving grace is if angled correctly you can bounce 16 inch guns off the raised casemate but this is something you want to avoid in general.
Overall opinion
Plymouth is a true glass cannon, to little armour to reliable bounce shells, to much armour to rely on over penetrations, She absolutely excess at killing Destroyers and is quite possibly the best support ship at the tier and holds an easy top 3 cruiser spot. But this ship is not causal player friendly, effective use of cover and map awareness are critical to staying in the fight and utilising the DPM available, bad positioning and poor use of cover/ smoke can send you back to port fast or prevent you having any real impact on the battle.
