On behalf of the Women of Asphalt, California Branch leadership team, it is our pleasure to announce the first meeting of 2023. Please join us for a short meeting on January 12, 2023 from 12:00 to 1:30 pm. This is an in-person, open meeting to discuss 2023 goals and events. The meeting is open to anyone who would like to attend. Members will bring their own lunch to the meeting, which will be at the InterContinental Hotel.

Season Greetings Women of Asphalt, California Branch,

The Women of Asphalt, California Branch leadership committee is pleased to invite you to attend an in-person look into the most prominent entities within the roads and highways infrastructure, Caltrans. The Sacramento Caltrans laboratory has invited the WOA, California Branch to get an up-close and personal look into a few of their facilities on Friday, December 9, 2022 at 3pm. Ms. Jackie Wong will lead the group through some of the testing laboratories. We welcome you to join the leadership committee and wear an ugly Christmas sweater during the tour. The committee would also like to invite you to bring an unwrapped toy that will be donated to a local charity.

Below is information about Caltrans and the tour:
Caltrans manages more than 50,000 miles of California's highway and freeway lanes, provides inter-city rail services, permits more than 400 public-use airports and special-use hospital heliports, and works with local agencies. Caltrans carries out its mission with six primary programs: Aeronautics, Highway Transportation, Mass Transportation, Transportation Planning, Administration and the Equipment Service Center. Their HQ Transportation Laboratory campus encompasses over 170,000 SF and houses several laboratories that support the Project Delivery Program through Design and Construction.

The tour will be approximately 60-90 minutes and will include the following laboratories located on campus:
• Asphalt Binder Laboratory
• Hot Mix Asphalt Laboratory
• Aggregate Laboratory
• Concrete Laboratory
• Cement Laboratory
• Chemical Laboratory

Among small cities in the United States, Roseville, CA has the 11th largest percentage of women in the construction industry. At 12.7% MORE than the national average of 10.9% we still have a long way to go but the leadership of the Roseville area teams is impressive and admirable! Congratulations to Roseville for helping to lead the way!

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Women only make up 10.9% of the Construction Workforce. ​

That statistic includes office and white color positions, the percentage of women putting on boots everyone morning is even lower! ​
​
Women in Asphalt is continuously working towards breaking down barriers for women to join and remain in the Asphalt industry with education & support. We also honor the trailblazing women who have come before us! ​

Percentages of women in the construction industry already trail behind but did you know that women of additional minority groups are even more susceptible for difficulties in business? ​
​
Women of Color make up only 4% of corporate suite level leaders in the workforce. ​
​
Unconscious bias can lead to minorities having to work harder, longer, and having a perception of being "perfect" to advance. Be aware and focus on measurable qualifications. If it can't be articulated why a candidate isn't better than another, perhaps unconscious bias is present.​
