Exactly one year ago, Governor Arthur Johnson Sakaja served the first Dishi Na County meal in a school.

This initiative was born from the stark reality that 1 in 4 children in Nairobi used to attend school on an empty stomach. Today, the food-for-education program has grown to support over 310,000 pupils across all public schools in Nairobi’s 17 sub-counties.

Governor Sakaja, who once attempted to introduce a bill as Nairobi’s Senator to provide meals for schoolchildren, is now celebrating the fulfillment of his vision. Reflecting on his journey, Sakaja remarked, "As a Senator, I visited many schools, and whenever I asked the children what they needed, they always said food. It was a shocking revelation, but it made me determined to one day make this dream a reality."

Upon taking office as Governor, Sakaja prioritized the food-for-education initiative. The Dishi Na County program, a collaboration between Nairobi City County and the Ministry of Education, executed by the Food For Education Foundation, ensures that every child in public primary schools and Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers in Nairobi receives a hot, nutritionally balanced meal every school day.

We have established systems across all sub-counties to ensure that, by the next term, all registered public schools will provide nutritious meals," Sakaja confirmed. To facilitate this, 17 kitchens have been completed, one in each sub-county, with seven set to be inaugurated by President William Ruto this coming week.

The program is designed to be affordable, with children paying just 5 shillings per meal through a tap-to-eat system.

For those unable to afford even this nominal fee, the county steps in to cover the cost. Sakaja emphasized, "Our motto, 'Watoto wakule washibe ile wasome,' reflects our commitment to ensuring that education is supported by proper nutrition."

The Dishi Na County program has also created employment for over 5,000 people, both directly and indirectly. As it marks its first anniversary, Governor Sakaja celebrates the realization of what was once just a dream.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has taken a significant step toward transforming Woodley Estate by compensating the current residents of its 43 housing units with KSh 900,000 each. This compensation is part of the county government's plan to replace the existing structures with modern housing.

Speaking during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the residents, Governor Sakaja announced that the redevelopment project would see the construction of 1,900 modern housing units, replacing the current 43 units. The new development will be named "300 Woodley Village."

"This is a significant step in making Nairobi a great city," Sakaja remarked. "We are replacing the existing 43 units with modern housing that will serve more people in a better environment."

The redevelopment will begin with the construction of the new units on 10 acres within Woodley Estate's 100-acre land. The project aims to enhance the living conditions of Nairobi residents by providing them with better housing in a more modern environment.

To facilitate this transformation, the county government has pledged KSh 900,000 to each of the current residents, helping them relocate temporarily. Governor Sakaja assured the residents that they would be the first to occupy the new units once construction is completed.

"This is the first time the government is offering such a compensation package," Sakaja emphasized. "You will not only receive KSh 900,000 but also be the first to be considered for ownership of the new homes."

The governor also directed the County Executive Committee (CEC) in charge of urban and housing renewal to ensure the project's success, with plans to replicate the model in other areas such as Bondeni, Lumumba, and Kariobangi.

"As we embark on this project, it must be completed on time and serve as a model for other regions," Sakaja added.

CEC for Urban and Housing Renewal, Patrick Mbogo, echoed the governor's sentiments, highlighting the county's commitment to implementing urban renewal initiatives that deliver modern housing. "We are dedicated to providing better, modern homes for our people," Mbogo said.

Lydia Mathia, the Chief Officer for Urban and Housing Renewal, confirmed that the compensation process was a crucial step in actualizing the housing program for Woodley Estate. She assured that the county had compensated the tenants to facilitate their relocation, with vacation notices to be issued soon.

"This project marks the beginning of our modern housing initiatives, and we are fully committed to seeing it through," Mathia stated.

Residents, some of whom have lived in Woodley Estate for decades, expressed optimism about the project. Beatrice Boiti, a resident of over 30 years, praised the MoU, which guarantees them priority in the new housing allocation. "After living here for so long, it's time for modern homes that will expand and beautify our city," Boiti said.

Developer Wainana Kinyanjui, who is overseeing the construction, assured the county of their commitment to completing the project in the shortest time possible. "We are grateful for this partnership with the county and will do our best to deliver," Kinyanjui said.

The transformation of Woodley Estate is expected to set a precedent for future urban renewal projects across Nairobi, signaling a new era of modern housing development in the city.
