60 years ago today, on Wednesday 20 November 1963, this photograph was taken of a 38xx class 2-8-0 locomotive approaching Chipping Sodbury tunnel in floods. We hope the photographer got off the tender before the loco reached the overbridge!

The photograph was sent to us by Ted Abear, who relates how he came to own it:

“The photo was one of many I got from the Western Region Publicity Office in Bishop’s Bridge Road, Paddington in 1965 when it was closing down. They let people at Paddington know they were getting rid of everything. Myself and two colleagues from the Control went, there was a massive collection of photos of everything railways, I picked up a load of loco and train photos, quite a few named trains among them. I paid sixpence for each photo, also some old GWR magazines, everything was sixpence, I had £5 of items, all the money collected was for the Railway Convalescent Homes. One colleague picked up three years’ bound copies of the GWR Magazine for 1/6p (7.5p in today’s money)

NATIONAL ENTREPRENEURS’ DAY: CELEBRATING THOSE BUILDING RESILIENT BUSINESSES AGAINST ALL ODDS.

Meet Zoro: Entrepreneur, Companion Driver, Owner and Managing Director of Driving Miss Daisy Didcot. Wife to Terence Sr, Mother to Terence Jr and Nathan. Runner and advocate of continuous development and challenging ones self.

Emigrating from Zimbabwe to the UK in 2006, Zoro transitioned seamlessly from education and employment in broadcasting to working in care with the NHS.

Whilst these opportunities gave Zoro personal fulfilment, they did not meet her entrepreneurial needs or provide much needed work-life balance. So, in 2019, after extensive research into opportunities, she is delighted to own Driving Miss Daisy Didcot, a driving and companionship service specialising in, but not limited to, clients with limited mobility or disability, or who have learning or confidence challenges.

We started with one 'Daisy' vehicle and our first journey was Christmas Day 2019. Against all odds, Zoro successfully built up the business during the pandemic, supporting vulnerable people and their needs in and around Oxfordshire. She is now proud to offer a fleet of 7️⃣ vehicles and a strong team of companions. 👥

WOW! Please give it up for Zoro this

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

140 years ago today, on 18 November 1883, ‘Standard Time’ was introduced, dividing the world into 24 time zones. In its November 1933 edition the Great Western Railway Magazine celebrated 50 years since the introduction of ‘Standard Time’.

This completed a process which had been started in 1840 when the Great Western Railway adopted ‘London Time’ throughout its schedules, as the railway’s system spread westwards. At that date, clocks in Bristol were set 11 minutes behind those in London. A standardised time was adopted by Britain’s railways in 1847, based on Greenwich Mean Time and sometimes known as ‘Railway Time’.

With the spread of electric telegraph along the railway system, it became possible to transmit a time signal so that clocks on stations could be set to all show the same time. In 1933 the GWR Magazine reported the time signal came through at 10 am each day, adding that: “Probably the most unusual way in which the time signal is passed on is at Penzance station. Here, the telegraph clerk stands at the door of the office, and when the time signal comes through, he blows a horn, which is the signal for the guard of the 10.0 am up Cornish Riviera Express to give the engine driver ‘right away’. This photograph shows the 10 am ritual taking place at Penzance, where local time is 20 minutes after GMT.“

It was a Scottish engineer and publicist, Sir Stanford Fleming, who brought about the plan which from 18 November 1883 divided the earth into 24 zones, in each of which a uniform time would operate. One of the main advantages of ‘Standard Time’ was in the USA where the sheer size of the country resulted in each American railway company having its own time, or in the case of longer lines, several different time zones, and great confusion arose at overlapping points. It was estimated that in 1880 there were some 80 different standards of time in use by the American railway systems – a state of affairs which made a long rail journey awkward and very complicated.
