The government took some very early steps to combat the spread of the virus which so far have proved successful. At the present time, we are entering phase two of Denmar

Yesterday, the 7th of May, Denmark’s prime minister Frederiksen, announced the second phase in the reopening of Denmark. Very soon, shops will be allowed to reopen, older kids will return to school and restaurants will once again be able to welcome guests from the 18th of May. But it will not be business as usual. There will be many guidelines and regulations to follow and the city’s usual operation will be drastically altered. We talk about this and much more with Copenhagen’s City architect in our podcast next week. What steps is your city taking to easy restrictions?

As restrictions around the world continue to be in place, we are living more locally. Our homes are the place where the majority of our time is being spent, and our movement is generally restricted to taking a stroll or cycle through our neighbourhood. The small details of where we live suddenly play a huge role in our everyday lives. The balcony which lets us get fresh air during the day, the sidewalk leading from our homes to the local grocery store, and the local park where the kids can play. The small and mundane details of daily life are put into focus and their design has a direct impact on how we feel and are able to cope with this new way of living. Can we take these lessons beyond the crisis, and put an emphasis on designing for the ‘everyday’?

Once upon a time we showed up to the office everyday for work, but now, working from home has become the new normal. Over a period of only a few days, we have had to drastically change the way we conduct not only our everyday lives but also business. Business travel is no longer possible and remote meetings are a daily occurrence. Although some have also had to contend with caring for children at this time, initial research shows that working from home has proved to be productive. We no longer have a daily commute - we cut down meetings only to the most essential all while being in the comfort of our homes. A future of flexible working is becoming more likely with many new remote working tools opening up the job market for lesser abled bodied people whom were previously not able to access it. But not all homes are fit for working. Not everyone has the luxury of a home office, and many do not even have access to the internet. How do we design homes in the future to allow a greater flexibility between home life and work life? Can public spaces be the key to unlocking the potential of the flexible city?

Currently, around half of the global population is living under some kind of lockdown. In Denmark, we have been lucky enough to continue spending time outside, yet at a distance. Over the past weeks, urban dwellers have flocked to nature areas in bigger numbers than ever before. Many nature areas close to the city have experienced up to 50% more visitors than in previous years while nature areas father afield have experienced a sharp decline. As our cities grow, how can we improve access to nature and ensure that these fantastic resources are sustained?

Based in Copenhagen, and love to cycle around the city, absorbing the sites and getting inspired by new architecture, exhibitions and the everyday life that unfolds in the city’s public spaces. Through Urban Narratives, we will share some of the things that inspire us about Copenhagen, and discuss how Scandinavian values and approach to design can be translated into other cultures.
