KEEPING IT REAL
This is what I look like 75% of the time! (Sweatshirt & glasses on without my hair done)
PA SCHOOL IS NOT GLAMOROUS it is easily the most challenging and mentally taxing thing I have voluntarily done. In the month of October I had 8 exams and 2 practicals and in this past week I had 4 of those exams.

I spend most of my time at my desk or in the library while trying to balance some relaxing time for friends, family, loved ones, and daily gym sessions.

It is a rollercoaster of emotions and I try to celebrate the small victories while charging through the knock downs. Although extremely difficult I make an effort to forget about the past exams/ grades and move onto the next one. You really don’t have much time to process everything being thrown at you which makes it difficult to stay “okay”.

I just wanted to come on here and share that if you are going through PA school right now IT IS OKAY NOT TO BE OKAY! I certainly do not have it all together- I have broken down from the stress and understand that no one really has it completely together no matter how they come across.

It is extremely exhausting and cut yourself some slack you are doing the best you possibly can given these circumstances!

YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE PERFECT!

Please share with or tag someone you think needs a pick-me-up/realization.

Clinical Skills Lab was a blast last week learning how to perform ABGs, shots, and venipuncture on a very stiff nervous patient! Luckily I was able to prick them multiple times without any backlash

What is an Arterial Blood Gas (ABG)?
An ABG is a blood test that measures the pH, and the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide from an artery (most commonly the non dominant hand radial artery). The test is used to check the function of the patient’s lungs and how well they are able to move oxygen into the blood and remove carbon dioxide. This test is commonly performed in the ICU and ER setting

Be a PA Advocate!

The PSPA has introduced Senate Bills 870 & 871 to modernize our practice Acts, giving the physician/PA team and institutions more flexibility in delivering care to our patients.

The intent of the PA Modernization Act Legislation is to bring Pennsylvania into alignment with all of our bordering states that we currently lag behind and onto a similar plane as many other states across the nation.

All states have an obligation to protect those within their borders by regulating the practice of medicine within the state. By including the PA profession in state law and designating a state agency to regulate PA practice, states both protect the public and define the role of PAs.

PA School Update
I dressed up to act as the PA in our clinical medicine seminar where I had to perform a comprehensive history and physical for a patient coming in with “rash x 4 days.” With the help from fellow classmates we created a differential diagnosis, suggested diagnostic testing to rule out DDx, and correctly identify the patients diagnosis with an effective treatment plan.

Finished up PD lab this week by performing optho, neck, and thyroid physical exams.

Completed my first exam of the semester which was for Physical Diagnosis that covered general survey, vitals, HENT, and skin.

Don’t confuse my smile for happiness I am extremely stressed because of Derm Clin Med exam Monday and Pharm exam Friday!

HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!!

Have you ever thought about the legacy you want to leave?

This is my personal vision statement: To be the person my children, parents, and loves one’s are proud of. To be the person known as caring and always there for others. To live a life of constant learning and improvement where I can help people reach their full potential. To be the person that people feel has helped them and my wisdom and love has touched them.

If I succeed in achieving that I believe I will die happily and peacefully.

Share with me what you want to leave behind!

Presence of mind and being fully aware of the now is something I have been on a journey to be successful at. The constant array of thoughts racing through my brain leads to unnecessary stress and emotions. The best practice I have put into place is continuously striving to be in the present moment whether that be studying for exams, watching lectures, or hanging with friends and family. Shutting off my brain to the outside noise such as past better times or future worries has been extremely beneficial and I still struggle with it daily.

Social Determinants of Health

Health begins way before illness and it is multifaceted. It is affected by where we live, learn, work, and play. Unfortunately there is health disparities linked to the social and economic disadvantaged. Do not ignore these barriers to good health for yourself or when you are treating patients as it will surely benefit the patient to be treated holistically instead of curing the disease/ illness.

You never really know the true impact you have on those around you. You never know how much someone needed that smile you gave them. You never know how much your kindness turned someone’s entire life around. You never know how much someone needed that long hug or deep talk. So don’t wait to be kind. Don’t wait for someone else to be kind first. Don’t wait for circumstances or for someone to change. Just be kind, because you never know how much someone needs it. •

Patient Care Experience- How I became a pediatric MA

I am forever grateful for my pediatric sports concussion doctor who treated me for 3 concussions and helped me pursue my medical passion. Once I was no longer a patient of hers she allowed me to help with patient intakes during my summer of sophomore year. My duties included measuring vitals and note taking during patient evaluation. Unfortunately 1 month in she was told to stop working due to pregnancy complications. Luckily, a patients mother was an office manager for a private general pediatric practice who allowed me to start working for them for FREE as an on the job trained MA. I performed patient vitals and vision/hearing screenings in addition to, administering vaccines, throat cultures, urine analysis, and flu swabs. I fell in love with the office and created relationships with the children. I began to be requested as the MA to work them up and before starting my junior year I was offered a paid position for when I came back from school breaks. I worked there for 2 more years on breaks accumulating over 1200 PCE hours. It is crazy looking back how everything worked out and I will always remember that office for allowing me the opportunity to get patient care experience in order to fulfill PA requirements. They played a vital role on my path to becoming a PA.

Create your own reality

6 years ago in the depths of depression, panic attacks, and su***de ideation I came across this quote that changed my life and I try to remind myself of it everyday. So here is my interpretation of this quote.

We don’t have total control over what happens to us, often we have no control at all. But we do have control over how we respond and perceive that experience. Everything we experience, and ever have experienced, has taken place within our own consciousness. We are the creators of our thoughts and actions which form our perspective reality. Our personal power over what we think creates the essence of manifestation. With imagining the success of reaching a goal we create the capacity to achieve it. We can benefit from our experiences to help us grow and learn. At times finding the purpose/ meaning behind a terrible situation can be extremely difficult but with focus we have the ability to do so. We hold the capacity to grieve and heal no matter how long it takes. Through self awareness and self love we can become more mindful of the power of our thoughts beginning to focus them on creating our best, happiest, and most successful reality.

Medications that contain gelatin or pork are forbidden however, Islam permits the use of any drug in a life threatening situation. Dehydration warrants breaking fast. Cupping is used to treat various disorders. Muslim patients with diabetes use honey as a traditional remedy. Abortion is prohibited except in case of in**st, r**e, and if the life of the mother is threatened. They believe that illness and cure is based on God’s doing therefore, euthanasia is prohibited as death is in God’s plan.

Females will delays seeking care due to modesty and fear the lack of female clinicians. Avoiding eye contact is a sign of modesty and respect. If a person of the opposite gender must perform the physical exam, inform the patient of the reasoning for removing any articles of clothing and it should be immediately returned. Visiting the sick is an important part of a Muslim’s duties and is required by Islam. Do not be shocked to see extended family present and remember to encourage privacy when discussing medical matters with the patient. The body of the deceased should not be washed as this will be done as part of a special religious ritual before burial.

Don’t assume every Muslim’s behavior is due to their religion, it may be their culture, upbringing, or simply their personality. Muslims are not a homogenous group so try not to make broad generalizations. @ Thomas Jefferson University

Most important characteristics of a PA student:
Flexibility/ Resilience/ Adaptability

Things are constantly changing in PA school whether it be the schedule, curriculum, or an assignment. Being flexible with the changes will surely suite you well when adapting to everything thrown your way throughout PA school. Ironically I was planning to post this and today we were just notified by TJU that precautions are becoming stricter in Philadelphia and there is a possibility we might not have any in person interactions or extremely limited occupancy. Our class is dying to meet one another and are upset and frustrated with this news as virtual learning is not the same. However, we continue to bounce back knowing that nothing worth having comes easy and making the best of this experience will make us even better providers for our patients!
Strengthening your resilience muscle from difficult situations knocking you down will definitely be beneficial in enduring future tribulations.

“Hi guys! My name is Alyssa and I’m in my first week of PA school at Touro University Nevada! I graduated undergrad from UCLA and got my masters in Medical Health Sciences at Touro. My road towards a career as a PA has had a lot of speedbumps, and I'm here to share my experiences with pre-PAs to help you guys have a smoother ride. Your success is important to me so please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions!

I’m interested in specializing in mental health 🧠 there’s such a large shortage of mental health providers, yet the numbers of people struggling with mental health continues to grow.

My advice to all the pre-PA’s out there is to ALWAYS persevere. This journey is a tough one. There will be highs and there will most definitely be lows. Learn to view your failures as successes and NEVER GIVE UP. You will make it & I’m here to help you do it!”

I definitively decided to pursue medicine as a career after watching my mom give birth to my brother via caesarean when I was 12 years old. I remember being completely fascinated as I watched the surgical staff fly around the operating room like superheroes. In college, I chose the Physician Assistant career after a lot of deliberation, ultimately realizing that it was everything I had been looking for in a medical career when it came to lateral flexibility and work-life balance. When applying, I set my eyes on TJU as my dream school and when I got both my first interview and first acceptance from the program, it felt like kismet. Ultimately, I am so glad I chose this program. Besides TJU’s impressive healthcare network, I love our program’s commitment to its tradition of collaboration and teamwork, something that is incentivized by our faculty and upperclassmen from the very beginning. Currently, I am interested in pursuing a career in either pediatrics or OB-GYN. However, I’m keeping my mind and heart open for whatever may come and allowing myself to explore all of my options.

“I never considered a career in medicine until later on in my journey. I earned my bachelors in Visual Studies and my masters in Integrated Product Design and began working in health care innovation. I fell in love with patient care and realized that every experience I had in some way prepared me to be an empathetic clinician. Through my shadowing experiences, I met so many amazing clinicians and really felt I fit in with the PAs I got to know. The lateral mobility and flexibility PAs have solidified my choice of this career. I completed my post-bac at Jefferson and between the faculty, location, facilities, and health system it became my top choice for PA school. In the future, I'm most interested in practicing in cardiology and/or palliative care. I created my PA insta to show career changers, q***r people, and those who value self-expression that there *is* a place--and a need--for them in medicine!“

Preparing for the start of PA School

You have been accepted and are waiting for the start of PA school. So what do you do? Study? Travel? Relax?

I would suggest doing what will make you happy in the last few months leading up to the start but try not to review old anatomy notes! Enjoy time with friends, family, and loved ones as much as possible.

I went directly from undergrad into grad school with 1 week between them but I luckily got to go on a vacation in January before Covid 19. I know due to these circumstances travel is limited however, you can still adventure to national and state parks to see amazing places the US has to offer!

Don’t forget to get your clearances, immunizations, physical, and other required documentation to your school before matriculation.

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE STARTING PA SCHOOL IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS!

GRE Basics
About 50% of PA Schools require the GRE. For those that require the GRE some report no required minimum score aka checkbox while others recommend scoring above the 50th percentile on each section or above 300 total so please do your research on the schools you will be applying to. The reason the GRE, a standardized strategy test, is losing its weight in the application process is because it is not a valid predictor of how you will perform in PA school.

The computer delivered GRE test administered at various testing centers takes about 4 hours and consists of 3 sections:
- Verbal Reasoning (Reading)
- Quantitative Reasoning (Math)
- Analytical Writing

Before taking the exam I gave myself about 2 months to prepare using the books created by the test writers (ETS) because I did not want to have to retake the test for $150. The answer choices and scoring are different than other standardized tests so please make sure to become comfortable with that aspect before moving on to the actual content.

Review the basics of math! You will be shocked how much algebra and trigonometry you forgot.
Do the practice questions provided after each review section in the study materials.
Test yourself at least two times using the online simulation GRE test delivered by ETS.

Once again, remember the GRE is just one aspect of your application and as long as you fulfill the minimum requirement I would not suggest retaking it to score even higher. A below minimum GRE score will get your application thrown out but a extremely high one may not provide any benefit unless it counteracts a lower GPA.
